Flight to Gold Coast

Today Darren, Susan, Akarsha and Sam woke up early ready to drive down to Sydney airport for our flight to Gold Coast. We’re going as part of Sam’s 14th birthday present to watch the Indigenous v Maori Rugby League game at Cbus Stadium tonight.
At the airport we got Maccas for breakfast then met up with Jem, Harry and Jack Stone who are going with us.
Akarsha and Sam haven’t been on a plane since they were 7 or 8 about 7 years ago. They were pretty nervous as the plane took off and landed and as the plane turned and we were just looking at water outside the window but also pretty bored during the one hour flight!Read more

Landing on the Gold Coast and Hire Car

We waited in the queue at Budget to pick up a van Jem had booked so we could all travel together. Akarsha occupied herself with some Tick Tock while Daz checked out the tourist information.

First stop Go Karting

After lots of discussion about things to do the general consensus was Go Karting.
So after registering and putting on funny balaclavas everyone except Jack and Sus got their helmets on, had a safety briefing and headed off on to the racetrack.
Some played it safe and others had a few skids and bingles (Jem and Harry).
Harry has the fastest lap and Daz the 2nd fastest.
After break all the drivers got back in for a second session except Daz who objected to the tightly strapped helmet.
This time there was a lot more competition with Jem the winner with the fastest lap followed closely by Harry and Akarsha. We’ll need to watch Akarsha when she gets her Ls in September.Read more

Sushi, Timezone and Starbucks

Drove into Surfers Paradise and had lunch at Sushi Train. Sam was not a fan. Daz and Jem had twice as many plates as the rest of us put together. All the kids were then keen for Timezone while the adults chilled at Starbucks.Read more

Surfers Paradise Beach

After the kids finished at Timezone we went for a walk down to Surfers Paradise Beach. There was a Sculpture Festival on and the sand sculptures were amazing based on fairy tales.

Indigenous All Stars v New Zealand Maori

The reason we’re here! Sam’s birthday request. Indigenous All Stars v New Zealand Maoris Rugby League. We arrived to see the traditional war cries between the two teams. The game was played in quarters with the two teams neck and neck up till the end of the third quarter with the Indigenous team ahead by two points. Sadly in the last quarter the Maoris scored three tries!! Which was a disappointing result for us. We made it back safely to our van which Jem had parked quite close (where all the buses had parked) and then went hunting for our motel and food because some of us (Sam) were hungry but sadly the Maccas at Tweed Heads was full of partygoers and there was a half hour wait for food so all Sam got to eat was the chocolate bar that the Motel owners had kindly left in our room.Read more

Back to Sydney

Up at 6.30am for our flight back to Sydney. Breakfast at the airport and then on board where we were sitting up the front in row 3. Akarsha is sure she has caught the Corona virus because she used the same helmet at go karting with someone who was wearing a mask! Back to Sydney and said goodbye to Jem, Harry and Jack who hopped in a taxi with a driver wearing a mask! We caught the shuttle bus back to our car. Then one last treat at Krispy Kreme and the birthday weekend is over.Read more
