Arrived at T1 and had to walk to T2 for immigration and baggage reclaim - about a km of corridor in total! Glad there's a metro the the High-Speed Rail now

Great stir fry place - cheap (beer at under €2 a pint, 20-25 deep-fried oysters for around €3) and cheerful. In and out in 50 minutes. Stuffed at €12 a head.

The end of the railway line. And a fee old railway artifacts in this little town. It used to be a hub of the logging industry - though that's long been stopped - and the old sawmill has been turned into a shop/museum.Read more

There's not much history in Taiwan. Earthquakes and typhoons mean that things don't last for long. However, it's also because they don't care well for what they have. These buildings date from the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). There are not many left. See how the bricks have fallen away from the top if the wall. See how they cover them up with shabby signs. So sad.

On the other hand, the tilework and stained glass on the modern art-centre is beautiful, as is the countryside.Read more

Puli is the geographic centre of Taiwan. This is the stone to mark it, and a monument set in a park to talk about it.

I don't know what the old building was - looks like a station but there are no track and it doesn't look like there ever were.

Many roads in Taiwan are beautifully adorned with plants - either down the middle as here, along the hedgerows or with flowering trees.Read more

Tainan has plenty of old buildings from the Japanese colonial period, including one that looks like a wedding cake!

An interesting feature of the city is the electric connection boxes from when the power lines were put underground. Most of them (and they're about every 100m!) have been hand painted with country scenes. Mostly similar but never identical.

Anping harbour has this large statue of a sea godess, a retired navy destroyer (originally US, built in 1945) and a couple of APCs, as well as a reconstruction of the ship Xoxinga used to come to Taiwan to kick the Dutch out.Read more

I love banyan trees. Hard to believe they're the same genus as a fig tree. There's an old warehouse in Tainan almost taken over by them.

Many trees in Asia have these two dimensional roots, quite unknown in Europe.

Flowering g trees and creepers are everywhere in Taiwan. They're just starting to flower now, but all the streets will be in full bloom in a month's time. This is, therefore, just a taste of things to come!Read more
