  • Whiskey Tasting

    6 juni 2024, Schotland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

    - we woke up and decided to explore the newer parts of Edinburgh. Though less exciting and interesting, it is the necessary part of keeping Edinburgh relevant, and was still quite cool. We jumped on a walk that took us along the river and eventually popped out at the bottom of the royal mile. We found a nice rooftop bar where we could stop for a drink and admire the fantastic view of the black rock in which the cities castle is situated. We once again, made our way back to the royal mile, and just before the entrance to the castle, we went inside a distillery to begin our whiskey tasting. We had the more expensive tasting and as such we had some nibbles to accompany the different whiskeys. I was shocked at how well they matched each other and hid the burn of the whiskey. I've hardly got a taste for whiskey, but that only made me more impressed how they accompanied the food and whiskey together and made both taste amazing. The host then walked through the different regions of Scotland, how they differ in their whiskey taste, gave a brief history, and then we began to drink. He started by explaining how to properly drink whiskey, what flavours we might encounter, and what they might mean for the whiskey (i.e. region, distilling process, etc.). You could tell he thoroughly enjoyed talking about and tasting whiskey as his mouth could barely keep up with his brain as it tried to output as much as it could. We started with a bitter whiskey that was 12 years old and partnered with chocolate very well. We then moved onto a malty whiskey that went with some venison. Thirdly we had a sweeter whiskey that paired very well with some trout. And finally we had a vintage that ended with a bang, combined with cheese. Each time I was shocked at how well they accompanied the whiskey, the Scots really do know a lot about whiskey. We explored the gift shop, eager to see if we could take our favourites back with us, but so late in the trip and having visited so many distilleries, most of us were out of space to buy too much. We then enjoyed one last pub feed and went back to the hotel for dessert and to finish off all the remaining food from the past weeks of travel, as well as pack our bags.Meer informatie

  • Goodbyes

    7 juni 2024, Katar ⋅ ☀️ 38 °C

After 3 weeks travelling together, we all got up, cleaned the apartment and began the struggle of getting everything out. We all left at similar times and so said goodbye collectively before Melissa, Andrew, and I went to the airport for our flight. They were before me, so I had even more time to kill before my flight but after a delay for them we were close to departing at the same time. Eventually their plane was called and I said my goodbyes, and began my solo journey all the way back to Aus. My first flight to Doha was not too bad, I had space next to me to get comfortable, and hours was basically just a warm up for my flight from Doha to Aus tomorrow. My accommodation for the night left a lot to be desired, especially given the cost, but the cupboard turned bed sufficed for a decent night's sleep. Plus being so close to home, made it a bit easier to deal with.Meer informatie

  • Australia Bound

    8 juni 2024, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

I arrived at 1am in Doha, caught up on messages on my phone for an hour or so then went to bed around 2:30am and woke at about 11am, a pretty decent sleep when the room was the size for a cupboard. I checked out as late as possible and hung around the airport for quite a while. I killed a couple hours at a café, then another couple at hungry Jack's. I then slowly wandered to the gate and sat around until it was finally time to board. I could have spent my time exploring Doha, but so close to the end of my trip, and so short on cash, I opted to just take it easy and waste time in an airport. Now, the real fun part, 13 hours sitting down on a plane. I was sat next to a nice British couple for the flight. I later found out were both doctors as a medical emergency broke out on board and they had to spend the whole trip periodically assessing a poor sick patient locked up in the bathroom. Made me feel a bit guilty of convincing them to have a couple servings of wines a bit worse, but they kept me up having to access the aisle all night so we can call it even. Not that I sleep well on flights anyways. They were super nice anyways.Meer informatie
