By noon, we had driven up past the northeast corner of the island and headed south along the coast. Derick did a great job driving the Azores’ version of the Amalfi Drive as we weaved along the ridge and up again into Furnas. This town is located on a volcano and is known for its hot springs which are used for cooking a specialty dish on the island known as cozido which is stew that is slow cooked in the geysers. Furnas is where Mark and Derick’s hotel is but it was too early to check in, so we went over to a nearby restaurant and tried this local dish. I think the consensus was that it was a real treat but it had a slight volcanic taste to it.Read more
