  • Paris Arrival

    11. maj 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Met our special guest star (Ronnie) at Charles De Galle Airport this morning at about 6:30 am. We had a very pleasant saunter through central Paris including a stop at Shakespeare and Company and a walk through the Tuileries Gardens. The highlight was lunch with an amazing view. Ronnie treated me to a belated 60th birthday lunch in the Madame Brasserie on the first level of the Eiffel Tower. It was delicious, the weather was perfect, and the view was spectacular. We saw several of the temporary sports arenas they’re creating for the Olympics — two in the Place de la Concorde and one right next to the Eiffel Tower. Paris creates a beautiful backdrop for these venues the way that they have them tucked into the Parisian cityscape. After that we returned to our hotel near the Gare du Nord so she could crash. That first day is tough with the time change and no sleep on the plane. Plus, we walked over 6 miles. I’m not sure if her nap will turn into a full night’s sleep but either way it’s fine. We’re close to Montmartre so I took a walk up there. I’ll head back up there if she doesn’t wake up. We’re in a strategic location for train travel, but the hotel isn’t great. We just needed something convenient and Paris is so expensive, so I kind of cheaped out on this first one. It was still really expensive compared to my little Spanish hotel rooms on the Camino. For the rest of the trip we’ll have nice accommodations but here we just needed a layover. Ronnie doesn’t seem to mind. She’s exhausted. The whole place though just seems like it’s ready to fall apart. It’s full of happy tourists who were all probably in the same boat — needing one affordable night near the station — but the guy at reception is directly out of the French videos Janice and I used to watch on PBS — French in Action. He has a cartoonish, Mr. Bean quality to him and bumbles through every interaction. I just spent 20 minutes with him trying to print our train tickets. Just when he finally got the computer figured out, only one page printed. Sure enough the paper tray was empty and so began the next Mr. Bean bit — didn’t know where the refill paper was, jammed the first page, need to reprint, back to the computer mayhem. And of course he says “É voilà!” when he hands over the printouts. He was so nice though, I just considered it part of the show. Ronnie just texted me that her nap is done, so we’re gonna go for a walk up to Montmartre.Læs mere

  • Amsterdam — Rembrandtplein

    12. maj 2024, Holland ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

What a great new experience for Ronnie and me. Our first time in Amsterdam and we’re staying on a houseboat in one of the main canals. My bedroom is under the couch! We sat on the deck this afternoon and watched the world go by. It’s so beautiful. We decided to just chill tonight, so we went to buy some pizza and snacks and we’ll be watching the sunset out on the deck. We are getting into the Amsterdam spirit. It’s like no place I’ve ever been.Læs mere

  • Amsterdam — Mokum

    14. maj 2024, Holland ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Everything worth seeing in Amsterdam is less than a 20-minute walk from the boat. We really lucked out this time with AirB&B. It’s very comfortable too. The deck has been our sanctuary. We spend lots of time sitting out there watching all of the boats on the canal. The set-up inside is great. We each have a bedroom below deck on each side of the kitchen, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. Although we’re docked in the city center, it’s pretty quiet for sleeping. An American couple walked by as we were leaving to head for a bus tour, and, thinking we were the Dutch residents of the houseboat, the husband said, “Life is good, huh?” We explained we were renting but acknowledged that, in fact, life is good on a houseboat. The tour showed us the areas of the city around the perimeter of the crowded center but the rest of the day we walked around the canals and over the bridges. I bought a t-shirt that has the word “mokum“ under the city’s name so I asked about it. The woman said it was a nickname for Amsterdam. I looked it up later to find that it means “safe haven” in Yiddish and was used by Jewish communities to refer to several Dutch cities, but over the years Amsterdam’s people adopted it as a way to warmly refer to their city. “Mokum is the city. Amsterdam is Mokum,” the woman had said in the store. And we were feeling it. From our little houseboat on the canal, Amsterdam is Mokum. Our plan for the day was to walk around and find something interesting to do between the morning bus tour and our tour of Anne Frank’s House later in the afternoon. We had lunch at a place that offered typical Dutch cuisine, and we ordered stamppot. It was kielbasa and a meatball on top of mash potatoes mixed with spinach — really good. The Rembrandt House was nearby so we took a really informative tour of his 4-story townhouse complete with art workshops, teaching studio, and a menagerie of artifacts from exotic places. We walked from there to the Anne Frank House. Ronnie had booked the tickets weeks in advance to make sure we could get in. The museum was incredibly sad but thoughtfully put together. I read the book as a kid and included Anne Frank in many lessons as a teacher, but the way the story was told in this museum, Anne’s father really came into focus. He was the one with the foresight and the courage to make the plan for the family to first escape to Holland and then to hide in the annex. His plan nearly worked. Sadly, what seemed like the mokum he had hoped for in Amsterdam turned into a nightmare. Of the eight people in hiding who were discovered by the Germans, he was the only one who survived the concentration camps. After the war, he dedicated his life to telling Anne’s story and having her diary published to fulfill his daughter’s dream of being a writer. I’m in awe of Otto Frank and I want to learn more about him.Læs mere

  • Amsterdam — Ice Bar & Rijksmuseum

    15. maj 2024, Holland ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Today we hung out on the deck for as long as we could, then we checked out of our houseboat and went to a nearby cafe for coffee. Our train wasn’t until 3 pm so we stashed our bags and headed for the Rijksmuseum. That was an amazing place. It’s no wonder it ranks right up there with the Louvre and the Prado among Europe’s best art museums. On the train leaving Amsterdam we felt really happy with what we were able to see in three days. Last night we went to have Indonesian food, which may not seem part of the Dutch experience until you look at their history as a colonial empire. We also took a walk through the Red Light District, which was basically just gross, but we figured we had to see it. The highlight of the night was the Ice Bar, close to where we stayed. It was something recommended to Ronnie by a friend. As you enter, it seems like a normal bar, but then they give you a coat and gloves and move you into a large freezer where everything is made of ice. The bartender gives everyone three coins to trade in for drinks, so we had some shots in shot glasses made of ice. After about 30 minutes, everyone was ushered out to make room for the next group. It was fun. On the train today, while we were reflecting about our trip to Amsterdam, we felt that we had spent the time well. We’ll have good memories of our houseboat on the canal and this unique city.Læs mere

  • Paris — Dalí & Pére Lachaise

    16. maj 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

We have an attic apartment in Le Marais which is pretty centrally located. We went up to Montmartre for breakfast at Chez Eugene on the Place du Tertre. We watched the artists painting portraits as we had our coffee and croissants. The Dalí Museum gave us plenty to think about and a busker on the steps of Sacre Coeur had Ronnie singing out across the rooftops of Paris.Læs mere

  • Paris — The Louvre

    17. maj 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

We had a great tour of the Louvre that focused on a less crowded wing (which I thought was great), then we did a hunt for the greatest hits with all the crowds. Mona Lisa had a mob as always, but that didn’t stop the New Yorker I’m traveling with. Ronnie elbowed her way to the front row. She credited her years of concert-going with helping her develop this impressive, and very useful skill.Læs mere

  • Paris — The Patti Smith Tour

    19. maj 2024, Frankrig ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Sunday was always going to be Patti Smith Day. We decided that early on. Ronnie’s gothic crow and punk rock goddess lived for some time in Paris when she was young. The city inspired her. Today we put together a tribute to Patti and walked 13 miles in the process. It was a one-day pilgrimage. Please follow the link below to see our Patti Smith Tour of Paris:
