Lake Atitlan

Um 4 Uhr morgens ging es dann zur Aussichtsplatform, von der aus wir den Sonnenaufgang über den Lake Atitlan anschauten. Schon Alexander von Humboldt hat damals in seinen Tagebüchern geschrieben, dass es einer der magischten Seen ist die er je gesehen hat. Tatsächlich gehört der See zu den 3. schönsten auf der Welt laut National Geographic.

Lake Atitlan würde vor ca. 80.000 Jahren durch eine massive Vulkaneruption geformt und die 3 heute sichtbaren Vulkane (San Pedro, Atitlan und Toliman) haben sich erst danach geformt und einer davon ist noch aktiv. Der See hat ein rießen Problem mit der Wasserqualität da Abwässer oft direkt in den See geleitet werden....daher ist Baden hier nicht unbedingt gesundheitsfreundlich und hat bei vielen schon zu paar Tagen aufm Klo geführt. Viele Teile des Sees sind extrem touristische mitlerweile und die einheimischen Bevölkerung wurde an machen Orten vollkommen verdrängt weil europäische und amerikanische Aussiedler und Hippies gewisse Gegenden komplett vereinamt haben.

Was man hier normal macht ist mit dem Boot die Städte besuchen und die Vulkane besteigen.

At 4am we went to the viewing platform from where we watched the sunrise over Lake Atitlan. Alexander von Humboldt wrote in his diaries that it was one of the most magical lakes he had ever seen. In fact, the lake is one of the 3rd most beautiful in the world according to National Geographic.

Lake Atitlan was formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 80,000 years ago and the 3 volcanoes visible today (San Pedro, Atitlan and Toliman) were formed afterwards and one of them remains activ. The lake has a huge problem with water quality as sewage is often discharged directly into the lake....so bathing here is not necessarily health-friendly and has led to many people spending a few days on the toilet. Many parts of the lake have become extremely touristy and the indigenous population has been completely displaced in some places because European and American emigrants and hippies have completely occupied certain areas.

What you normally do here is visit the towns by boat and climb the volcanoes.Read more
