  • Hello (selamat hari) Malaysia

    28 janvier 2024, Malaisie ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

After the wonderful tour from Yy and his friends yesterday, we woke up feeling excited but nervous about exploring Malaysia “alone.” It’s so wonderfully disorienting to be in a country where everything is new. We’re slowly trying to figure out how to: order vegan food in a restaurant (so far we haven’t been very successful…); where to buy groceries (check!); safe spots to take out cash (check again!); and what roads to travel.

Getting out of Johor Bahru we had no choice but to ride the 3-6 lane highway. Luckily we had some new hand signal skills from Yy about how to manoeuvre through traffic. We even found $5 on the side of the road!

Later, we took a side road that turned into a red dirt plantation track. We were a bit wary of our surroundings and ended up seeing our first monkeys swinging from the palm trees above us!

  • Coffee, Kopi, Café

    4 février 2024, Malaisie ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

After some days of riding. Richard start with a flat. A Sign of rest? We agree to take it easy. We start with a nice western coffee:)

After a ride of 15 km a second coffee. A half our later we arrived in our luxury hotel for Tonight. We have to wait another hour for check in. That mean? Exactly coffee break…after a shower and some chill day in the hotel Richard enjoyed another coffee:D

The coffee felt extra well deserved because, although we had a shorter day of riding, it was absolutely the busiest. We are on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city with a population of over 2 million. The highways are packed, full of construction, and completely pot-holed. With next to no shoulder and lots of hazards to avoid, it’s been a more gruelling day on the bike. Still we encounter countless kind moments when we have a chance to converse with the locals and our hearts are always lifted when we see Palestinian flags raised in solidarity.

  • Otherworldly Landscapes

    25 février 2024, Thaïlande ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

The last few days of riding up from Krabi have been absolutely otherworldly. Massive limestone rocks carve up from the earth in almost alien pillars. We’re eating a lot of bugs from all the time we spend with jaws dropped in astonishment—wow!

We’re now on the outskirts of Khao Sok National Park and have made the decision to veer east toward the train station. With the pressure on to meet Richard’s mum in Ho Chi Minh City mid-March, we’d like to catch the train to Bangkok. Let’s see what the next few days bring!

  • Train to Bangkok

    1 mars 2024, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Richard and I rolled up to the train station in Surat Thani and managed to procure some straggler tickets in cart 10. With the only “air conditioning” coming from the lazy ceiling fans and whipping winds of the open windows, we were in for a long night. 11 hours is undoubtedly the longest train ride either of us had experienced, and it was a bit surreal. Lots of people watching and following random trails of thought as the lack of sleep began to show its evidence.

At 5am the next morning, we were happy to reunite with Frankie and D’Artagnan (our bikes). Due to some translation issues, we weren’t entirely sure our bikes were going to make it to Bangkok with us. But alas, the worrying was for nothing!

We had some coffee and did some sleep deprived wandering before checking into our hotel and sleeping from 5:30pm until the next morning. Our time in Bangkok has flown by, tomorrow we test out another train ride toward Cambodia. Fingers crossed that our border crossing goes smoothly!

  • Border Crossing

    3 mars 2024, Cambodge ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

  • Kampot

    9 mars 2024, Cambodge ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Another successful day of navigating Cambodia’s public transit system. We took a 150km bus from Phnom Penh to Kampot and were very impressed by the luxurious ride. We’re also feeling very grateful for the extra boost to help us get to Ho Chi Minh by the 15th to meet Richard’s mum.

Our afternoon was spent revelling in the quiet of a smaller town and enjoying lots of good food. Tomorrow we embark on another border crossing, this time to Vietnam—not before visiting one of Kampot’s famous pepper farms though!
