    Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland

    22 Januari, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ -3 °C

On our first day in Czech Republic, we took a day trip tour of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland.
We drove 2 hours across the border into Germany and stopped near Dresdon in a national park known as Saxon Switzerland. The area was called this because it reminded many visitors of Switzerland. Whilst there, we stopped at three view points including Bastei Bridge.

We then drove a further 50 minutes back into Czech to have our lunch. I had Hungarian goulash with dumplings.

After talking to Martin our guide, we found out that he studied in Hull as part of an exchange!

After Lunch, we went to a forestey area called Bohemia. This area had thick snow and ice everywhere so we had to wear cramp-ons to avoid slipping.

Bruce got very excited about the snow and carried around a couple of interestingly shaped snow balls for a while and we even made snow angles. Towards the end of the hike, I even noticed that my hair was starting to freeze!

The forest was covered in blueberry plants that the guide said can be found everywhere in spring. He also pointed out a rare lycen that glows in the dark.

Sadly, 4pm it began to get dark and it was time to go home. One of my favourite days on the trip so far!

  • Prague City Centre and Prague Castle

    23 Januari, Republik Czech ⋅ ☁️ -4 °C

Today, we had a free walking tour of the city centre. Our guide Jan was fantastic. He took us to a number of places including, the Astronomical Clock, Charles University, The Jewish Quarter and Charles' Bridge.

The most interesting part of the tour for me was John Lennon Wall. This was because Jan told us about his own experience of Czech leaving communism and becoming independent. Anyone is free to draw on the wall and at the moment, there is some graffiti of a town representing Ukraine being chased by Vladimir Putin and Chased by Trump. Who knows what will be on the wall if we ever visit again in the future?

After the tour, we walked to Prague Castle. Bruce and I both agreed that we were a little disappointed with the Castle as it was more like a collection of buildings.

On the way back, we walked across Charles' Bridge again and made a wish as shown in the photos.

I was feeling a bit tired today so I persuaded Bruce to have a bit more of a relaxed afternoon and didn't get back to the hotel too late.
