    Travelling cheap is an adventure

    August 4 in Scotland 🌧 17 °C

I got a cheap flight leaving Germany at 6 in the morning (thanks to my parents for driving). Arrived in Edinburgh i waited 3h for my flixbus, just to have to run because the flixbus airport station is not at the airport. Luckily it was late so I made it in time.
In Inverness I looked for the Airbnb, and bought some spares for my backpack to prepare.

  • Starting the trek

    August 5 in Scotland 🌧 13 °C

The main idea of this trip was to do the skye trekking. A 7 day trekking with 3500 meters of elevation gain and about 100km.
At least that was the plan before I knew that I would be moving around the world and thinking I would be recovered.
I was still with in injury in my leg after not recovering sufficiently but I wanted to give it a shot.
We left our airbnb in the morning with the backpacks to go to portree on skye. In portree we waited for some time, saw a music parade and got a bus to the beginning of the trekking.
A red phone booth that we would soon see again.
We met some more Germans and started the trek together.
With sideways rain and patagonian winds we started with full motivation. Luckily today was only 2km to a bothy, a very basic hut for hikers.
We arrived there around six with already 15 people in a hut made for 3. Everything's was soaking wet.
During the hike my injury felt fine but as soon as we stopped I started to feel it quite a bit.
After some instant noodles with ibuprofen we went to sleep on the floor, happy to not be outside.

  • Change of plans

    August 6 in Scotland ☁️ 16 °C

I wake up in the night at 2am with a lot of pain in my leg. On top my mattress deflated. In the next 4 hours I took 1200mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg of paracetamol.
On top of that the weather report for the day after tomorrow showed 80kmh winds and a full day of rain for a 25km and 1300 vertical meters and sleeping in a tent. So the only sensible decision is to abandon the trek. The other guys that started with us also went back due to the weather.
As it turns out it was a good decisions. The skye mountain rescue team later stated that these were the busiest they have ever been.

In the morning we were woken up with a beautiful sunset at 5am. We head back to the phone booth surrounded by swarms of midgets. We take a bus to the next ferry to the isle of lewis. I slept trough the whole ferry.
On lewis we take a bus to a cafe and museum and the way and then later continue our way to Stornoway.
The airbnb luckily has a sauna. And I took a large siesta.

    August 7 in Scotland 🌧 15 °C

After a long night we get on a bus to visit the standing stones of callaneigh. Standing stones that date back around 5000 years. Quite an impressive site.
Of course its raining sideways. But the visitor center has a nice Cafe to warm up.
Later on the sun comes and we take a second visit.
Then we take a bus to the black houses, a museum with the traditional houses of the island. Including a guy that loves to talk about the Harris darn. It only took 5 attempts to leave his explanations.
Back in Stornoway we decide to try out the not so famous Scottish cuisine.
Time for fish and chips, fried haggis, fried black pudding and fried oreos as a desert.
An experience in itself, but most things would have been better unfried was our final evaluation.

  • The butt of lewis

    August 8 in Scotland 🌧 15 °C

Another rainy day, so why not go to the beach.
We take the forst bus to go to the butt of lewis and the beach nearby. The butt of lewis is a lighthouse surrounded by some spectacular cliffs. It's a 30 minute walk from the bus stop, of course accompanied with liquid sunshine. We are the only people at the beautiful site.
For the next stop we walk to a beautiful and windy beach. Overall a special scenery in the rain.
Instead of waiting in the rain we walk to the next tea room, where they don't sell any coffee but some nice tea and soup.
Back in Stornoway we enjoy the sauna and wait out the rain. In the evening, for the first time the sun comes out. We visit the castle and the surrounding park accompanied by midgets.
In the evening its already time to organize our small apartment.
