Redwood National and State Parks are a string of protected forests, beaches and grasslands along Northern California’s coast. Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park has trails through dense old-growth woods. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is home to Fern Canyon, with its high, plant-covered walls. Roosevelt elk frequent nearby Elk Prairie. Giant redwood clusters include Redwood National Park’s Lady Bird Johnson Grove.

Fremont's Fort
General John C. Fremont, 1813-1893. A noted military man, explorer, topographer, senator & businessman, Fremont was also a miner. He settled in Mariposa County living just outside Bear Valley.

He operated the Josephine, Pine Tree & Princeton Mines and other claims. In 1858 he returned from his travels to operate his mines and found many had been "jumped." In taking them back a feud developed with several groups, one being the "Hornitas League" which tried to seize one of his mines. After that incident a fort was built to defend "only" access to the mines.

Afterwards his battles were in the courtroom.Read more

The initial development of a Japanese garden was envisioned in 1967 and the donation of land by Ralph Woodward to establish Woodward Park helped launch the establishment of the Woodward Park Japanese Development Committee led by Ben Nakamura."

Historically, the Hmong New Year celebration was created to give thanks to ancestors and spirits as well as to welcome in a new beginning. It is also a time of the year where Hmong people gather with family and meet with relatives from other regions.

Celebrating the New Year
An important communal and social event that occurs after the harvest season, this major celebration is held at the end of the twelfth lunar calendar month. It is a time for Hmong people to serve their favourite dishes, wear their best clothes, take a break from their businesses, and refrain from speaking critically of others.

During the First and Second Indochina Wars, France and the United States intervened in the Laotian Civil War by recruiting thousands of Hmong people to fight against forces from North and South Vietnam which were stationed in Laos in accordance with their mission to support the communist Pathet Lao insurgents. The Rand Desert Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the cultural and architectural history of the Rand Mining District and adjacent historic sites in the Upper Mojave Desert Region of California. Information about the community of Randsburg can be found at the museum.
