• Marktkirche

    26. August 2025 in Deutschland ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

The Marktkirche is "the southernmost example of North German Gothic brick architecture". That's something. It's a big church, and like a lot of the northern Protestant churches we've visited, lacking in interior decoration. Built in the 1340s, it was destroyed in World War II. Today, it serves as the seat of the Evangelical bishop of Hannover.

We also visited the remains of the Aegidienkirche, refurbished in 1347 from a Romanesque church (1160s) that replaced an even earlier chapel. Destroyed in the war, it was left in ruins to serve as a memorial. Inside, one can find the Hiroshima Peace Bell, dedicated by Hannover's sister city, Hiroshima, Japan. Of course, I didn't get a picture of that. Yep, end of the trip.
