Mostly Saxon Christmas Markets

Finally, the Christmas Market trip, but in a different part of Germany. Saxony, the home of German Christmas traditions, and Thuringia. Læs mere
  • Medieval Market

    15. december 2024, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

For a place we never planned to go, and not seeing any museums, castles, et cetera, I have a lot of pictures of this place...

That said, this was a very nice medieval market. The workers were dressed in costume, which was hit or miss in the others we went to. They had they usual kitchy things: the hair bands and fake swords for kids, and believe me, I've bought my share of that stuff with four homeschooled kids. They also had a few craft booths, the printer was interesting, and of course food and drink.

There's a few last pictures of the other market as well, along with the really very delicious Lebkuchen with whipped cream waffle we had on our way out to the car.

If we ever get back to this part of Germany, I wouldn't mind coming to Chemnitz to see some of the museums. I've only heard negative things about the place, but I liked it, from what we saw.

  • Pfunds Molkerei

    16. december 2024, Tyskland ⋅ 🌬 48 °F

Back in Dresden. Car was returned on time. Today, our last day, we were going to pick up last minute things, and visit a few places in the Neustadt. And by new, I mean the 1800s.

Pfunds is a place I learned about in an Art Nouveau group I'm in on Facebook. Little did I know, but I should have suspected, it's a huge Instagram place. Sigh.

It's a milk store. If you read the Bavarian trip, you'll know I like milk, and even hiked up a mountain in the Alps to get a cup fresh from the cow. But Pfunds is more than just milk. It's a beautiful milk store, as the pictures show. Beautiful, crowded, with a lot of expensive milk-related products, a cafe upstairs, a glass of buttermilk for a Euro on the ground floor. That was all right. The fresh from the cow Bavarian milk was better.

It was also filled with people setting up their Instagram and Tik Tok shots, very many overly made up young women. I hope they all bought something. Some of the looked like the could use a couple glasses of milk and some cake.

  • Kunsthofpassage

    16. december 2024, Tyskland ⋅ 🌬 50 °F

Another must see according to a lot of people online, the Kunsthofpassage. It was nice, however I think since I've seen a good number of similar places, it had less of an impact on me. It would have definitely been better if it was raining, and the pipes were playing music.

Also included, some random pictures of the Augustusmarkt, the Pragerstraße festival of lights, and some snaps we took before settling in early to catch our six o'clock (in the morning) train to Frankfurt airport the next day.

  • Fulda and auf Wiedersehen Deutschland

    17. december 2024, Tyskland ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

Arrived Fulda. No Soviet tanks in sight. All is well...

I was excited to pass through Fulda on our trip back to Frankfurt, being the history nerd that I am. Our train was a bit late, but that was fine, because our flight was delayed by four hours. We did get twenty Euros each for food though, so nice job Discover/Lufthansa.

Some bad through the window shots from a high speed train pictures of the trip to Frankfurt. Flight was uneventful, but a very long eight plus hours. We were both happy to be back in Philly. Even immigration was fast and efficient.

Final thoughts. Definitely liked Saxony. Dresden is a beautiful city. I wish we had more time in some places, like Bautzen, but that's always the way. I would like to return to the Erzgebirge in warmer weather to hike and see more of the area. Maybe a combination of that and Czech Republic since it's right there. We shall see.

Next up for non-US travel: the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt with its historically significant towns of Quedlinburg and Goslar, and to see the heather blooming on Lüneburg Heath.
