    Took the 9pm Amtrak Thruway Bus to Richmond, BC, after #sketchwaiting at Uwajimaya's
    Talked with the border guard about his recommendation for Lisbon (big discoverers statue near water)
    Stayed at Sandman Vancouver Hotel
    Slept 4 hrs (had slept 1.5-2 hrs on the bus)

    Watched Killers of the Flower Moon
    Didn't sleep much on the plane afterwards
    Navigated Customs just fine
    Met up with M at Starbucks in International Arrivals and chatted away
    Subwayed and sipped Suco da Manga at an outdoor café, while waiting for our bus
    Bussed - and chatted 🤣 - back to Caldas (about 1 hr)
    Met Tim coming to meet us
    Met Patrícia their landlady
    Napped briefly
    Leftovers YUM! for dinner
    Cherry liquer & its cherries for dessert - made at the castle town right near here (Óbidos)
    Showered and down at 10:30pm

    Lunched between the beach and the lagoon on the shady deck of a small place called 7a.
    Tuna baguette and iced lemon tea.
    M&T chilled while I got not 1 but 2 (TWO!) sketches in.

    Up at 9 to leave for church by 9:30. Got there by 10!!🏃‍➡️🏃‍➡️🏃‍➡️
    Walked through the market again to pick up a few more fruits and veggies (yakiimo!)
    Headed to the park - beautiful old buildings used in WWII as a hospital, as well as a duck (and swan!) pond. There was also a Casa dos Barcos.... but no boats. 🤔

    The wander through the park included the weekly flea market, which was HUGE
    Saw the Monica comics we're reading in Português class! 1€ each
    Lunched in the cafe in the park (frango tosta com queijo) while sketching
    Tim left early to wrestle taxes
    Martha and I walked down to see the construction of their new apartment
    Stopped in at e-clerc supermercado for a last few items
    Home to chill and rehydrate
    Dinner and laundry (dried on a line in the courtyard, open to the sky)
    Hoping to talk with the family today, but . . . We'll see.

    Took a Bolt ride to Óbidos and wandered around the castle town.
    Stopped in at the sardine shop (of course 😆).
    Walked around the narrow, cobblestoned streets. So picturesque!
    Walked along a SHORT section of the ramparts, as there was NO railing - on the ramparts or the stairs.

  • Chillaxing in Caldas

    Fish shop for tuna fillets. Tim went home with the fish; we went on to Crystal & Marcio's.
    Bible study at Crystal's with tea and pineapple.
    Plaça das Frutas for veggies and bread (try as we might, we could not get Sra Pão to shift over to the brown breads! But the so-called sandwich rolls were delicious. AND she threw in a fourth for free!)
    Lunch at home with Tim. Tomato & sardine open-faced sandwiches. Yum.
    Did laundry and chilled.
    Hung laundry to dry in the breeze from the veranda, then a nap.
    Cider and bites with the expat group. Met Peggy and Sonu from the Bronx.
    Home for sautéed tuna filets with broccoli and curried turnips.

    Sketched Patricia's patio from our veranda
    Taxied to Mário Reis' house and studio
    2 barky dogs and 1 nonchalant cat greeted us at the gate
    Chatted all things ceramic
    Martha asked him for her 4 cat tiles (1 @ for her and her 3 girls)
    Mário drove us back into town (he had to pick up his daughter from piano lessons in town)
    Said Até breve to Patricia
    Walked to the bus station

  • Caldas da Rainha to Lisbon, pt 2 of 2

    Bus on Rede Expresso to Sete Rios
    Temps rose steadily, another 5°C
    Couldn't get credit card authentication, so had to taxi at 3x the price 🫤
    Anu met me at the door, and the staircase up is TOMORROW'S video
    Christine was here, so we Ubered together to O Gambuzino, a vegan restaurant that someone in our workshop had recommended
    Had a FABULOUS dinner, with sangria made from GREEN wine (from Loureiro in northern Portugal) and gazpacho served in little crust balls.
    Bolted back to Christine's
    Anu & I walked back (10 min?) to our place
    Showered and in bed at 1am 😴😴😴

    Woke up 1 hr+ early, so got up and wrote Morning Pages
    Walked with Christine to Miradouro de Santa Catarina
    Arrived early so looked for a cafe
    Found The Mill 0.1 mi away.... but all downhill 🤣🤣
    Granola, yogurt and berries with iced latte for breakfast
    BEAUTIFUL ceramics - plates, bowls, teapots
    Sketching at the Miradouro. Focus on limited palette.
    Shared sketching materials with interested bystander.
    Wrote haiku (in English, but with the 17-syllable constraint) to capture the moment
