Fusina

We had plenty of time to get to our ferry to Patras since it was leaving at 1am. We took a vaporetto to St. Mark's and found that we needed to purchase another ticket to get us to the vaporetto that would take us to Fusina, where the ferry port is. However, the vaporetto failed to mention that the one to Fusina had just finished for the night, so we ended up stuck there. Thankfully, a restaurant owner and his lady friend helped us with alternate plans to get there. We ended up taking a land taxi from Venice to Fusina.

However, when we arrived at Fusina, we discovered that our ferry had been delayed by 7 hours, and there was no way to leave the desolate port. We hunkered down for a night on the floor of the ferry port building, surrounded by mosquitos.Read more

Nearly to patras

Our ferry has made up significant time, and now we appear to be only a few minutes late. I've been in touch with our airbnb host and hopefully everything will go smoothly.

After a confusing disembarkation, we took a taxi to the bus station to Athens. I have heard there is a train, but there seems to be a lot of confusion about this subject. So we are on the 6pm bus to Athens, which is a little over an hour from now.Read more

Eleftheria

The best, and most important, part of our trip to Athens was getting to spend time with my friend Eleftheria. She and I met nearly 20 years ago when I was backpacking through, and she worked at the Hostel in the Internet Cafe in Athens. We hit it off and have stayed in touch ever since. Seeing her is always my favorite part of any trip to Greece!

This time, because Kit really needed some "kid" time, we even got to meet her sister and her family. They were just as wonderful as I would expect, and we had a fabulous time! (I should have gotten a pic of just Eleftheria and I, but as usual, these things slip my mind. Ah well!)Read more

We arrived in Naxos Port and rented a car to get to our hotel. I chose to spend my birthday week here at a hotel right on the beach so we can both swim and relax!

Birthday on Naxos

I decided for my birthday we would try getting one of those "spa fish" treatments in Naxos Town. It felt a little like having my feet in carbonated water. Kit liked it. The restaurant at our hotel was very good and served fresh fish. There was a family of feral cats with kittens that we started observing at meal times. One interesting thing we noticed was that a young female helped bring food to the kittens, and we guessed that she was a sister from an earlier litter.Read more

Snorkeling at Pirgaki

We are incredibly lucky to have not only a beautiful, sandy beach right out of our door, but that it has some excellent snorkeling right off shore. It has been an excellent introduction to snorkeling for Kit.Read more

Mykonos - the day of waiting

We are only here to connect to a flight. We took the world's slowest ferry from Naxos, which was an hour late. We got to mykonos about 2 hours late, and no taxis were there. We made it to the airport, checked in, and then found our flight was delayed. Now it's delayed again. Hopefully we will still make it to Rhodes tonight!Read more
