    Los Angeles

    15.–19. Juli 2024 in den USA ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Monday night we arrived late at LA airport and took a taxi to my brother's house. He and his wife Maaike have been so nice to let us stay in their house and let us use their campervan. From there we have been taking day trips to several beaches around LA, such as Seal beach (Ballast Point Brewery🍺), Huntington beach, Venice and Malibu. Ofcourse we saw many surfers on all of these beaches and also some kitesurfers 🪂🪂🪂.
This afternoon we have been preparing the (old...) campervan and tomorrow we hope to start traveling towards San Diego.

  • Back to L.A. area

    24.–27. Juli 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We headed back from San Diego to LA and stayed again for one night at Laguna Beach at the perfect spot at the waterfront. Then off to LA for my brothers' 50th birthday. 🎈
Next day my brother flew us to Catalina island where the airport is high in the sky and we drove down to the village on mountainbikes.
In the meantime Koen got his own private flightlesson from Jan 🛩️ (no pics available).

  • San Francisco and around

    29. Juli–4. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After a lovely roadtrip past Santa Cruz, Sharktooth bay and Waddel (kite) beach we reached San Francisco. We first stayed two nights, explored a bit of the city walking and by bus and then drove off to one of the nicest (and warmest) kitespots in the area, which is Sherman Island. This is a state park (island) in the Sacramento river where you find nothing, except for cows and kite- and wingsurfers. The vibe here was really good so we decided to stay for several nights. When the wind went down after a few days we returned to San Francisco and explored a bit more of the city, this time by ferry, (electric) bikes and we even used a selfdriving taxi!. We especially liked Dolores park on Sunday afternoon. Off course the bridges were also impressive. We drove all big 3!Weiterlesen

  • North of San Francisco

    5.–7. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We are quite excited to follow the coast north from San Francisco, but off course we won't miss the Sonoma and Napa valleys, well known for their wineries. We do an extensive one day roadtrip through both valleys and see many..... grapevines. At the end of the day we return to the coast and sleep next to the ocean (and a seal colony). The next day we drive very afwisselend between pretty coastline and forest. On the coast it can be quite misty in the morning, inland it's very clear though, it's called a marine fog and we have been seeing it since San Francisco.Weiterlesen

  • Redwood National and State parks

    7.–8. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Our last day in California is an extremely pretty one. We drive and hike through big woods with enormous redwood trees. These trees can get heights up to 100 meters and there are many of them.
We also keep an eye out for elks which are regularly spotted out here, but are unlucky on that.
We spend the night in the parking lot of a casino, another American experience 🤗.
    Oregon, here we come!!

  • Oregon Coast

    8.–10. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We keep driving up the coast. In the mornings and later afternoons there is unfortunately quite a lot of marinefog blocking our views, but we do manage to see quite some wildlife along the way. Some herds of elks approx 100 meters from the road, and also from a nice viewpoint over the ocean we see 2 whales and can follow them for quite a while seeing them blowing out water, dive under and come up again. Very impressive!
Along the coast we see some nice art, drink some beers and have a good time!
In the village of Seaside we meet up with John who we met some 10 (or more ??) years ago during a beachvolley camp in Portugal.
    Next stop: Washington!

  • Seattle

    15.–17. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ 🌩️ 20 °C

We leave the coast and head inland towards Seattle. Again a beautiful route past the island of Bainbridge where we take the ferry to Seattle. Seattle is a city with a nice vibe and great views. We sleep next to the beach in West Seattle and drive up North to Edmonds for a boat trip through Puget Sounds and further (all the way into Canadian waters) in search of whales.
We are lucky since what we really wished for is to see orka's and we encounter a family of 5. At first we follow them in the distance but then they decide to come meet us and swim underneath our boat. Magical!! For a nice little film please check Koens blog @https://travel24.liveonaruba.com

  • Portland and the Columbia river gorge

    16.–21. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Oregon (and Portland) is famous for breweries so of course we had to taste some of their beers. Portland claims to have the biggest bookshop in the world, and yes, it is huge!! Also in Portland we went to the Japanese American museum where we learnt in detail about what happened to many Japanese American people during WWII. Not to be forgotten, the world's smallest park is in Portland.
After we were done in Portland we moved on up the Columbia river to do what we came for, which is kitesurfing in the gorge. The Columbia river is known for some strong winds through the gorge that makes for great kitesurfing on several spots like Hood River. The mornings are for sightseeing (great views of snowcapped mt Hood and mt Rainier) and hiking, and the afternoons for kitesurfing and chilling at the waterside.
Unfortunately the weather Gods were not with us and some depression elsewhere led to lower than normal winds, meaning I could still kitesurf but it was definitely not the fun I expected to have 😬. But well, other people are in the office and I was on the water, so I still did better I guess. It did mean that after three days we decided to leave the gorge and head to our next very exciting destination which will be... Yellowstone!!!

  • Yellowstone and Grand Tetons

    21.–28. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Quite a drive from Oregon up to Yellowstone, but not an ugly one, and we managed to find beautiful camp spots in the forest (thank you IOverland app and the federal governments of Wyoming and Montana for your policy on the availability of beautiful free forest camping).
Yellowstone must be one of the prettiest and most extraordinary places we have ever visited. It is so diverse in landscape with canyons, rivers, lakes, geysers and lots of wildlife everywhere. We tried to capture it in photos and films (see also Koens blog) and the real beauty will always be kept in our minds. We did several hikes and drives here. Day 4 we moved to Grand Teton which really is next door, and passed another beautiful 2 days around the lake, gazing at the peaks of the 3 Tetons and other mountains.
Here is were we (finally!) encountered a bear!!
Next stop: the great Salt Lake.

  • Great Salt Lake

    29.–31. Aug. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We stayed a few nights around Salt Lake City, first to see and feel the Great Salt Lake and then we had to wait for something to be sent to us. No problem, we jumped in the lake at the fabulous Antelope State park (island) and tried some beer at a local brewer. The second night we stayed at an alpaca farm north of the city. The farmcat loved Koen 😻Weiterlesen

  • Canyonlands

    2.–3. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

One of my favorite hikes so far has been here in Canyonlands NP. The views were fabulous, everywhere we could see there were canyons cut out in the rocks, very impressive!!
Also we found out we were camping very near to some dinosaur footprints.Weiterlesen

  • Navajo national monument

    3.–4. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

This day we take it easy, we drive towards Antelope canyon and make a stop for overnight at Navajo national monument. A national monument is not a monument as we know in the Netherlands but more like a National Park, but lesser known (if I understood well 😏). Still very pretty and free entrance with a year.pass for national parks 🎈. In this one we can see dwellings (very old houses) of the Navajo people very long ago under the rocks in the distance.Weiterlesen

  • Antelope canyon

    4. September 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Antelope canyon is a so called slotcanyon, a very narrow canyon formed by flashfloods, only occurring at rainfall during the monsoon season (according to our guide). During midday when the sunbeams shine through the canyon the effect is spectacular!Weiterlesen

  • Bryce Canyon via Lake Powel

    4. September 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

After Antilope canyon we take a cooling dip in lake Powell before we take off to beautiful Bryce Canyon NP. This National Park consists mainly of Hoodoos which are rock pillars shaped by cold weather. Bryce is situated pretty high and has long and cold winters. The ice makes the softer layers of stone break and erode easy and results in beautiful and ever-changing formations.
We did a great hike in this park.

  • Zion NP

    6.–8. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Zion is one of the most popular national parks of the USA, unfortunately that resulted in pretty crowded parking lots and hiking trails.
The first day I hiked the Narrows, a very popular trail through a canyon where you follow the river and walk through the river. Koen skipped this one. Unfortunately after maybe one hour hiking through the river there was a big rockslide a bit in front of me and people were coming back and strongly insisting others not to continue due to the danger of more rocks falling into the river, so I went back.
The next day we hiked to the three emerald pools, which was a really nice (but also busy) hike.

  • Spring Creek Canyon and Cedar Break

    8.–9. Sept. 2024 in den USA ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

After the crowds of Zion we went to Cedar City, a town off the tourist radar. Here we hiked to a beautiful red canyon, it was a long but very rewarding hike. In the afternoon we drove to the Cedar Breaks national monument, another very pretty site.Weiterlesen

  • Grand Canyon, North rim

    9. September 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The Grand Canyon is so Grand that pictures really do not do any justice. I did try though.
We flew over the canyon with Jan (my brother) in a 4 seater a couple of years ago, and that was so impressive that at first we didn't want to go again to not spoil our first experience. But this was a whole different experience and also impressive so glad we went!
Did a nice hike and a scenic drive with pretty overlooks.

  • Las Vegas, lake Mead

    10. September 2024 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Our way back to LA led us through Las Vegas. First we drove past lake Mead and the Hooverdam. Not too special to be honest and very hot. At night a nice meal in The Peppermill and a quick walk through the casinos (not our cup of tea) and the next morning off we went. On the road to LA we came past (another) classic diner we couldn't resist. I guess most tourists eat here, certainly not for the quality of the food 😂.
Last but not least we had a refreshing dip in the Virgin river because geez.. is it hot around Vegas.....
