Day 1: Arrival in Levi in the evening

    February 5, 2024 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ -9 °C

A long day of driving to Frankfurt, flying to Helsinki and then flying further on to Kittilä. After dinner we walked over to the lake Sirkkajärvi, which is the best location for northern lights. We did see some strange light in the clouds, but nobody was really sure what it was - definitely did not look like northern lights to me 😒
At any rate, it was damn cold standing on the lake for so long…

  • Day 2: Reindeer Safari & Samiland

    February 6, 2024 in Finland ⋅ ☁️ -16 °C

Early start to do the Reindeer Safari. We basically sat together in the reindeer sleigh and our reindeer was attached to the sleigh in front, which was lead by a guide on foot. So it was not fast, but great to see and to interact with the animals.
After the tour we ate salmon or tomato soup and learned more about the reindeers and the work of the reindeer herders. Then feeding moss to the reindeers was another highlight. Later we took the cable car onto Levi mountain to visit the Samiland Exhibition. It was very interesting to learn about the indigenous people of Lappland. The sunset from our vantagepoint on the mountain was incredible - but still no polar lights 😕

  • Day 3: Winter Hike & Husky Safari

    February 7, 2024 in Finland ⋅ 🌫 -17 °C

Since the husky safari did not start until the afternoon we did a short walk in the woods. There is a good range of trails which have been prepared for hiking, otherwise snowshoes would be necessary. I was wondering what the deep holes are on the trail’s edge - if you get too close, you sink down about 50cm 😁
The husky tour was phenomenal with Claudi and me taking turns at mushing. But, it was also the coldest adventure of the trip, since there was no option to let go of the sled or really move your feet. Towards the end, I began to worry about my extremities freezing off 🥶
The dogs did a great job - what a cool feeling gliding through the snow.
Afterwards thawing out with warm berry juice and cookies.

  • Day 4: Winter hike around Levi mountain

    February 8, 2024 in Finland ⋅ 🌫 -18 °C

On our free day we hiked the winter trails around the perimeter of Levi mountain to South Point. The weather was somewhat sunny, but very cold and also windy when we gained altitude. But the climb rewarded us with a new world, as the snow on the trees became even more bizarre. The resulting natural art was breathtaking. A demanding tour but very worthwhile. We took the Skibus back to Levi Zero Point. Then I did a short walk over to Immeljärvi lake while Claudi went shopping.
No chance of northern lights, so we opted for the sauna.

  • Day 5: Bye Lappland, layover in Helsinki

    February 9, 2024 in Finland ⋅ ☀️ -10 °C

An early start to catch our first plane from Kittilä to Helsinki. Since we had a five hour layover we took the train to the capital city. We did a very quick walking tour and were impressed. Even though it was just about as cold as in Lappland, the locals were swimming out in a pool by the harbor. This was the grand finale of our great trip. ❄️✨🥶🇫🇮
No northern lights, but a wonderful experience nonetheless.
