    The township of Hungerford developed as a cattle camp on the Paroo River during the 1860s.

    Hungerford was named after pioneer pastoralist and politician Thomas Hungerford (1823–1904). Born in Ireland, he and two of his brothers were among the first European settlers to open up country west of the Barwon River. He later served as a parliamentarian and, when he died in 1904 at the age of 91, left behind a family of 15 children.Read more
