Once the third largest city in NSW, the birthplace of Australian mining and frontier crossroads for the vast pastoral enterprise of the Far West, Broken Hill looms large in Outback legend.

A place of boom, bust and bravado, of industrial struggle and triumph that delivered benchmark workers’ rights for many and fortune for some, the so-called ‘Silver City’ is best known for its mining heritage which made BHP a national acronym. From the zinc, lead and silver of ‘The Hill’, as it is known, emerged the world’s biggest miner, Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited.
