Running out of Rhodes

The start of today was much like the start of yesterday, we had to get the girls out of bed to get moving. Not Ruby though, when I went downstairs she was sitting in almost exactly the same spot in almost exactly the same clothes as she was when I went to bed last night. Not sure what happened there. But for some reason the getting ready part did not run as smoothly, I think we were at least 3 minutes later getting out the door.
Today we were heading for old town Rhodes so the girls were harmonising a bit of Little Nas X in the back, something about taking their horses to the old town, and then they carried on with whatever bopping tune came next. It was music to my ears. It is s bit of a drive to the old town and we went through some different parts of Rhodes we haven’t seen before, none of which was worth any detour. We parked the car near the port and walked the final part , discussing how disgusting cruise ships are, depositing 5000 people or more in a town for a day. I guess each to their own but not for us.
Our first stop for the day, after making it past the hordes of men trying to entice us to eat or drink in their restaurants, was a Photo Booth that Lily had found. Never mind the fact that we all have phones and can take any photo of ourselves that we want, let’s all cram into a very hot, dark booth and pay €4 for the privilege of a machine taking our pictures for us. But that was fairly easy and it was then time for us to roam the old town. Funnily enough, roaming the old town of Rhodes was very similar to roaming so many other towns, shop, restaurant, shop etc. There was almost no way to tell that we were in Rhodes, we could have been anywhere. We did need to pick up some gifts though, Greek evil eye stuff, wooden penis bottle openers, that sort of thing.
Once that was taken care of, we left old town Rhodes and ended up in regular town Rhodes, the shops changed from tourist to regular high street, we needed to get some food. That was fairly simple too, but then our goal was the Throne of Helios. This was Jess’s idea, and it was very possibly the most un-Jess idea any of us have ever experienced. It was a 9D experience, the first in Europe,, which involved a bit of a ‘museum’ of the history of Rhodes and a film, in 9D. We were not sure what all the D’s would be but were keen to find out. The brochure seemed to suggest that scent, wind and rain were dimensions so we were very curious, no matter how hard we tried we could only come up with eight. We watched the film, which was a bit of a story of the myth of how Rhodes was created and then the history of the island so it was quite interesting, but still we hadn’t worked out what the final ‘D’ was. We were in our seats, being moved up, down, around, all over the place. Water was sprayed on us, something was hitting the back of our legs, bubbles were blowing around, smoke was blowing but still no… ah there it was, of course. The 9th D was the finger up the bum, not entirely sure how that fitted into the whole thing but I guess it was an experience.
We were starting to feel a bit weary and needed to head back in the general direction of our car, but we were also searching for a little oasis to get a drink. On the way we got attracted to a jewellery shop and got chatting with the owner who was obviously very good at what she does and managed to entice us in and had all the girls trying things on. We managed to escape with just a ring for Lily and a bracelet for Allegra. Surprisingly enough, after that we did manage to find an oasis and sat down under some trees to have a smoothie, a rainbow cocktail or a 7up zero, to Ruby’s immense disappointment as she really wanted a Sprite.
Back to the car and our drive home with the usual stop at a supermarket for dinner necessities. We got home and it was a bit of work for me and then Jess whipped up an absolute gourmet Greek meal, it was so good I think she should open up a little taverna. Now I am writing today’s blog but keep getting distracted by that romcom classic ‘27 dresses’ which most of us are watching, although Lily and Allegra have managed to tear themselves away and gone to bed. I think that I will be following, as soon as I have seen the happy ending of course.Läs mer
