Meatballs and snabb
August 3 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
Glorious blue skies greeted us this morning, almost enough to make us stay an extra day at Fonebo but sadly they just don’t have any supplies, not so much as bread for my lunchtime sandwich and so this was never really an option. We are still on our pilgrimage north and we consoled ourselves with the thought that at least we would be avoiding the non-tarmac road we came in on and it would all be smooth sailing, or at least smooth driving. About 10 minutes into our drive, just after we had passed the cafe we went to yesterday, the tarmac ended which meant a long slow stretch to start off our day, and there is not much that annoys me more as a passenger than our arrival time sliding, I like to feel like I am on time. But I just tried to tell myself to relax and enjoy the views and let the drive be what it was going to be.
In the end the rough roads did not last too long so we were able to get back to the motorway soon enough and we drove for a bit before finding a supermarket to get some essentials, it seems like we do this every couple of days. Today there was none of our favourite Coops around so we had to find a new chain, and one we had seen quite a bit was Willys, the one we stopped at today was quite a large store, it was a big Willys. This is a slightly more downmarket chain but we did manage to get everything we needed, all that matters really.
My turn to drive after that with not much to report. We passed through a few fairly non-descript towns, obviously this was not the most scenic part of the country. But that changed as we crossed over a very high bridge and entered Hoga Kosten, which was our inspiration for coming to Sweden. There was a parking area with a view of the bridge and gulf and so this seemed to be like a good spot to whip up today’s sandwiches for lunch. There was also a shop with very highbrow tourist stuff, €18 camping mugs, or Australian made leather hats, that sort of thing, so obviously we had a bit of a look around and Jess picked up a couple of gifts for our two fallen comrades.
The last leg of the journey today had a bit more iffy non-tarmac road but was mostly ok and we arrived at our campsite and picked out a spot with a fairly impressive view. We got set up and then just chilled out, which is actually not that common an experience for us. But we were just laying around on the mat outside the van chatting with Ruby for a while and Jess and I wandered down to the water. After a couple of nights off it was my turn back on the cooking tonight and on the cards was Monday night pasta, Swedish style. At the supermarket we had picked up some snabb which seemed like some form of macaroni. We weren’t sure if snabb is a brand name or if it is a type of Swedish pasta, but this is the type of impulse buy I have previously mentioned. We also had some vegan meatballs so it was going to be gourmet. On opening the snabb, they were the tiniest little macaroni tubes, I didn’t really understand why they needed to be so small, but basically it doesn’t matter how you dress it up, snabb is just pasta. Mix it with some meatballs and a tomato sauce though and it is a Lee dicious combination, you can’t go wrong and it was enjoyed all round.
We are going to make the most of the location and probably take another walk tomorrow, the rain is on its way so we have to enjoy it while we can. Even though it feels like we have not done much today we all seem to be quite tired, it’s hard work this being on holiday caper.Read more
