    Prambanan Temple

    We visited the Prambanan Temple which comprises the remains of 244 temples! It is World Heritage listed and is Indonesia's largest Hindu site. The highlight is the central compound, where eight main and eight minor temples are assembled on a raised platform – an architectural crescendo of carved masonry and staircases, the high note of which is Candi Shiva Mahadeva. Prambanan sits within a large park dotted with lesser temples.

    Sunset at Ratu Boko

    Ratu Boko Palace is an archaeological site. From Wikipedia - Probably the site was a palace complex which belonged to the kings of Sailendra or Mataram Kingdom that also built temples scattered across the Prambanan Plain. The argument was based on the fact that this complex was not a temple nor building with religious nature, but a fortified palace instead with evidence of a remnant of fortified walls and the dry moat of defensive structures. The remains of settlements are also founds in Ratu Boko vicinity. This site is located 196 m above the sea level, on the highest point in the site, there is a small pavilion from which one can see a panoramic view of Prambanan temple with Mount Merapi as the background.Read more

    Odong-Odong at Alun-Alun Kidul!

    As a special treat Rifa suggested we let the girls go on the brightly lit up pedal powered cars (odong-odong) near Alun-Alun Kidul. It was a long wait to get an empty one but once we were allocated one the excitement came back. We went for 1 (slow) lap around the area (just behind the palace we saw on the first day) but it was lots of fun with a choice of music to play and lots of bopping along.

    Then some girls tried the blindfold walk through the banyan trees. If you managed to walk through without hitting anything (everyone had a carer with them) you would have good fortune!    Read more

    Its 11 pm and we have just returned from a full day of activities including shopping at the Malioboro market, a visit to Prambanan hindu temple, sunset at Ratu Boro, riding in orong orongs and blindfold walking through the Banyan trees at Alun Alun.

    Borobudur Temple

    After packing our bags and taking them down to the lobby, we walked to the nearby bookshop/stationary/toy shop for a quick shopping trip. The bus then, after loading our bags, picked us up and drove us north. Our first stop was a restaurant for lunch. Then on to Borobudur temple.

    The entire site contains 504 statues of Buddha on 3 levels, 1460 stone reliefs on the walls and 1212 decorative reliefs along the path. The relief sculptures narrate the Buddha’s teachings (the Dharma) and depict various events related to his past lives (Jataka tales), and illustrate stories taken from important Buddhist scriptures (sutras).

    The temple has 3 levels and the idea is to walk around each level clockwise to follow the stories in the carvings.

    As everywhere we have visited the Indonesians have been very hospitable and wanted photos with us. Here it was no different. The girls were very popular.

    Rifa was still with us for the day and after she dropped us at our accommodation for the next couple of nights, we said a teary goodbye as Rifa has been a wonderful guide.    Read more

    Rice Planting 1

    Well it was much more than rice planting! First we dressed in traditional tops and hats. We were then allocated jobs to do before we walked in a procession to the beat of a drum to the rice paddy area. Jobs such as leading the cows, carrying bamboo sticks that were holding our morning tea and also the rice we were about to plant. And carrying live catfish that are used in the rice fields to eat pests. Others were banging the drums as we walked and others carrying the rice seed.

    Then we had morning tea - a variety of Indonesian cakes with water or hot tea. Next we played some games in the rice field so we were comfortable being there. And then we spread some rice seed in a special area to grow the rice for more seed.    Read more

    Rice Planting 2

    Then those who chose to could ride behind the cows as they ploughed up the soil in readiness for planting. Then several girls planted the rice seedlings trying to keep them in straight lines.

    Next it was time to catch the catfish that had been released a bit earlier. It meant getting into the mud with a basket and trying to spot where they were and then trying to catch them in the baskets. A couple of girls managed 5 or 6 each but all those who tried caught at least one.

    Then it was lunch time - catfish, rice, and vegies. Along with coconut juice.

    Dinner at Amata Borobudur

    For the last 2 nights we dined at our accommodation in their lovely outdoor restaurant. The first night was a buffet and the second night we chose from the menu. The last meal together was followed by a quiz of our trip and then a swim for those who couldn't resist the pool.Read more

    Andong Ride

    Our last activity in Indonesia.

    5 andongs arrived with drivers in brightly coloured shirts. We climbed in with 3 to an andong (it was a bit squishy) and set off for a tour around the country side. Once off the main road with the traffic reduced to a few motorbikes we saw many different crops growing including rice, bananas, chillies, papaya, cassava, peanuts, tomatoes, corn and some fish ponds. There were some homes along the way and the people all happily smiled and waved to us. A great finish to our trip.Read more
