Day 1 - Yellowknife to Edmonton

    May 20, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Our first leg from Yellowknife to Edmonton went without a hitch. We enjoyed watching the Oilers (on TV) win their 7th game! Miro is such an Oiler's fan.
On Tuesday we had dinner with Phil, Kristi, Maxwell, and Krisit's parents, Tim and Shirley. Very nice evening!
    Forgot to take pics.

  • Edmonton to Montreal

    May 22, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

This leg of the trip did not go so well. 🤦‍♀️
We did an on-line check-in for our Flair Air flight (which we purchased Nov 2023). After the boarding passes were printed, I noticed that boarding was at 6:15 a.m. and departure at 7:00!! Our itinerary showed a 1:40 p.m. departure! Turns out the departure time had been changed, but I did not receive notification. We had missed the flight. Groan
I was able to find another flight to Montreal on Air Canada and booked stand-by tickets. Thankfully we got on.
P.S. I called Flair Air. We will receive a refund.
P.S.S. Montreal is beautiful and we enjoyed a lovely meal with Ghislaine and Gisele

    May 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Drove a bit more than 2 hours from Montreal and have settled in a cute little chalet that is deep into the Gatineau Region of Quebec.
    Left to right on picture:
    Chantal, Diane, Ghislaine, Bruno, Gilles.
Diane is the "fridge witch"... only she is able to find room in there for everything. I don't think we'll go hungry.
We should have coordinated food a bit better... 5 tubs of blueberries and strawberries, 5 pkgs carrots, 3 pots of peanut butter, etc etc.
    Great evening playing Dixit.
Early to bed, tho as we are shooting for an 8:00 a.m. departure.
    More pics to come

  • Day 1 of Walking

    May 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Chemin des Outaouais begins at Notra-Dame Basilica in Ottawa and our 1st picture is on the steps of this magnificant church.
We walked passed the Canadian Mint (looks like a castle) and a number of foreign embassies. However, it did not take long before we found ourselves walking the beautiful trails along the Ottawa River. Before we knew it, we completed our first 12 km of walking.
Our weather was a mixture of sun and clouds and hovered around 16 degrees
We celebrated Bruno's 60th birthday... almost 6 months late. 🎂 Hahaha

  • Day 2 of Walking - 13 kms

    May 25, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Diane decided not to join us today as she did not sleep well the previous night.
Our day began bright, and sunny. It was exactly where we had finished, but it was very busy on the path. We noticed a significant increase in foot and bike traffic. Because it was so busy, we followed the 'new rules' of sharing a foot path with multiple users, that being, walk on the left - facing on-going bikes. We met a lot of fussy faces and unsettled people. Decided to walk as per normal - on the right and all was good. 😆
The particularly enjoyable part of the day was walking through a lush forest full of song birds.
Also enjoyed crossing the Ottawa River on a ferry ⛴️

  • Walking Day 3 - 10.5 kms

    May 26, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today was a bit of a different day. Our focus was not to get a day closer to Montreal, but to spend time with Azynatia, Joseph and beautiful little Flora (Chantal's daughter and family). We enjoyed a picnic with them on Petrie Island.
Here we put in a few kms walking around the island and were delighted by turtles sun bathing, numerous species of water fowl fishing and a chorus of birds singing.
We were sad to see Chantal leave our group today. She has other commitments to attend to.
The yummy fruit salad was yesterday's dessert!

  • Day 4 Walking - 11 kms

    May 28, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today was the first day I felt like a pilgrim on a journey towards a destination. The other days were filled with walks through forests, wetlands, and primarily along the river banks. We began this day walking on the road into a small town, walked through the town, and continued on a path next to the road.
Shortly after lunch, we were hit with rain, lots of rain, a deluge of rain. According to the weather channel, it rained 44 mm in 24 hours, and Environment Canada issued a tornado alert to cell phones. Never-the-less, we presed on. As Gilles is fond on saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing".
Played ' Unlock', an escape room game in the evening... so much fun!

  • Day 5 Walking - 13kms

    May 28, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Another 'pilgrim-walking' day, and this time Anna joined us!
Shortly after we headed out, we had our first mishap of the walk. Gilles slipped in the mud. Down he went. Eventho he was covered in mud, the landing was soft, and he soldiered on.
We saw our first welcome sign for pilgrims on the Chemin des Outaouais which was an indication that we were welcome on the property, We met a delightful woman who offered shelter from the rain. Gilles was able to clean-up at an outside tap and those of us who needed to, visited the little outhouse (petit coin) that was set-up for pilgrims.
It was a nice walking day.... some rain, but overall nice temperature for being outside.
We met our first group of fellow pilgrims who are on a 12 day journey to Montreal.
