    Day 2-4 Ballarat

    May 4–6 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Calm crossing over Bass Strait, then from Geelong through Maude & Steiglitz (ghost mining town) to Ballarat.
Spent 2 nights @ Seymours on Lydiard's with friends.
Saturday at the Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally, then a walk around Lake Wendouree & the wetlands- beautiful area. Back on Sunday morning to take a ride on the heritage tramway by the Lake before moving on to Budj Bim NP ....Read more

  • Long Point, Corrong to Milang

    May 8–9 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Lots of driving over very flat country from the Coorong, Meningie across the Pink Lake (a grey sludge, with not a hint of pink!) And across the top of Lake Alexandrina into wine country. So much fresh water - the lakes are huge, and the farms/vineyards irrigate. Very dry countryside with bright green patches. Stopped in at Lake Breeze winery for a tasting, and departed with 3 reds.
Milang was much smaller than we thought, but it did have an outdoor railway museum related to the steam paddle boat history of the area.

  • Fleurieu Peninsula - Day 2

    May 10 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Spent the day exploring the Fleurieu Peninsular after the essential laundromat and coffee. Very dry and bare hills except where irrigation is obvious on dairy farms - such a contrast. Checked out the Fork Tree micro brewery & found good porter.
Long late lunch at Lost Phoenix farm and Gin Distillery

  • Day 3 - Mustangs & Victor Harbor

    May 11–12 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Early start with Tony and Leigh leaving at 7am to drive the Mustang to 'Cars & Coffee' on the Victor Harbor foreshore. Lea and I followed at 8am. Finished up at about 10am, and then Leigh & I spent the rest of the day walking around Granite Island, the Bluff and exploring. Beautiful spot, with lots of new houses going in.....Water supply comes all the way from Mypongo Dam
The algal bloom warnings are out on all the beaches - saw the dirty foam along the shoreline

  • Deep Creek National Park Day 1

    May 13–15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Coffee at Delamere general store again before walking around the old Talisker silver mine - well interpreted
Drove into the Deep Creek NP, and set up for 2 nights at Cobblers Hill camp-site. Worse dirt road we've come across - deep corrugations- very slow 3km in!
Afternoon walk Blowhole beach (nothing blowing!) - Marrano Creek circuit (5km) which is part of the south end of the Heysen Trail
Lots of school groups walking sections with/without support crews for camping

  • Deep Creek NP - day 2

    May 13 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Lots of school kids arrived between 5-6pm last night and it was just as noisy as you'd expect as they set up camp and ate! We're far enough away not to be bothered.
Off at 8.30am to walk the Aaron's creek circuit and Goondooloo Ridge lookout. More butterflies (Monarchs) on the ridges and a wedge tail eagle overhead at the look out. Lots of galahs, magpies, blue wrens, crimson robins, and others we couldn't ID.
Quiet afternoon reading and playing games with a cool southerly change and some spits of rain

  • Port Lincoln and Mikkira Koala Sanctuary

    May 21 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C
  • Koalas, Whalers Way & more Koalas!

    May 22 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Rained overnight, briefly. Spent the morning touring the Mikkira property with Helen, the 3rd generation owner. Spotted well over 40 koalas!
The 600 acres has not been cleared fully, and not run sheep for over 70+ years. It became a Sanctuary 50 years ago for an insurance population of koalas from Kangaroo Island, as the same rare trees grow in both areas.Read more

  • French Cafe and Lincoln NP

    May 23 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Everywhere we looked around the lower Eyre Peninsular, Matthew Flinders had been in 1803/4- measured, searched for water, lost crew (8 in one go - very bad form!) charted and generally assessed!

More Koala action overnight with an argument/dispute happening a few feet from where we sat having our prawn & squid dinnerRead more

  • French Breakfast & Coffin Bay

    May 24–25 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Back to L'Anse for an amazing feast for breakfast. Buttermilk pancakes & Mushroom Eggs Benedict. No newspapers in Port Lincoln (except the local)
Winter Hill lookout, then drove around Coffin Bay NP (windy and no accessible walks)
Long drive to Elliston for overnight.
Forecast for severe southern coastal winds, rain and possible storms. Decided to stay inland and head towards Flinders Ranges over next couple of days

  • My Hat! - wind, rain and dust clouds

    May 26 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We had a safe night tucked up near the camp kitchen at Cleve. The next morning the wind increased, with strong gusts. We drove up Observation Hill at Cleve (100m if I'm generous) and as we got out of the car. A gust ripped Leigh's cap off his head and 5m up and away! My Hat!!! was yelled and he was off and running - it came down into bushes nearby and was saved - disaster averted!!!Read more

  • Cuttlefish and Silo light show

    May 27 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Due to weather, the boat tours had been cancelled for 3 days. One at 10.30 am today, and the rest for the days cancelled. Spent 90 min watching various fish, dolphins, one seal, terns, and cormorants. The cuttlefish were amazing to see, with the males luminescing and chasing each other. No photos as too difficult.
Came back into the marina through 1m swell and rising wind.
Port Augusta - a point on the map.
Very dry and empty landscape out to Flinders Ranges via the Pichi Richi Pass (following the old railway line)
