  • Flinders Ranges - Parachilna, Copley

    Jun 3–7 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Morning walk at Wilpena Pound, from entrance through the gap, past the permanent waterhole, and into the pound where the original homestead was built (Hill family)
Lunch at Parachilna - the 'road kill' grill, then onto Leigh Creek (old 1980's mining town, closed in 2016) now struggling to survive.
Drove onto Copley to Caravan park as reviews suggested. Met Dave (owner) who lived up to expectations!

  • Farina

    June 5 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Farina has an almost cult following in the area. An old railway town abandoned in ?70's. Restored underground oven now bakes everyday in June/July and sells goods from the only complete building - the cafe. Major $$ raiser for the group. 60+ volunteers, from all over Australia, do all the work, preserving buildings, selling goods. 2-3 week stays in caravan site on grounds with all water, toilets, showers, laundry ported in each year. Hundreds of caravaners/tourists visit each year.Read more

  • Akurra Trail walk, drive to Marree

    Jun 7–8 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Left Copley, and walked into Aroona Dam on the Akurra Trail, from Leigh Creek (10.5km return). Lots of feral goats around the dam - it's closed from 12 June for pest control.
Another coffee and cake at The Sassy Emu - how could we resist!?
Then drove through a dry, flat country to Marree. Not a lot at Marree - we're in the pub car park overnight (meal @the pub) before 7.30am flight over Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre)

  • Lake Eyre/Kati Thanda flyover

    June 8 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Watched the sunrise before our 7.30 - 10am flight over Lake Eyre.
North Lake is full, but the Goyder Channel has yet to overflow into the southern Lake.
The Warburton channel was easy to see, and the first part to fill, before overflowing and backfilling the rest of north Lake Eyre.
The gradient of the Lake is so flat, that some creeks drain out of the lake from Q/NSW floods, but at other times, flow into the Lake if there is high local rainfall!

  • Cold night, rain, and forestry beginnings

    June 9 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Rain on and off from Marree to Jamestown, so we booked into a farmstay on a winery outside Jamestown. Really cold night with heavy frost in the morning brrrrr!
Stopped at Bundaleer forest reserve and found the Heysen Trail again! Area where forestry first began in SA/Australia, with remnant Aboretum maintained by locals community.
Checked out Pikes Brewery and winery in the afternoon (neither stout or reisling convinced us to buy)
Stayed in Clare over night (cold and wet!) and needed a cafe breakfast in the morning

  • Wet morning, rodeos and Colin Theile

    June 10 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Wet morning, but very welcome rain after the drought. Drove via Marrabel, Eudanda into Morgan on the banks of the Murray.
It's incredible to come off the dry sandy Plains onto the Murray - no warning or green close by, just cliffs and tall river gumsRead more

  • Freezing fog, light show and river walk

    Jun 13–15 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Woke up to thick fog and 2 degrees at Manangatang. Drove into Swan Hill, and the fog was with us all the way
Lifted at 1pm while we were in the pub for lunch
Went to the laser light show 'Legends of the Mallee' that night, and explored the next day.
Still fog the 2nd morning - brrrrr
