    Ferrol

    Well, it only took two subway trains, three regional trains, a plane ride and a taxi to get here from London. But I made it. Start tomorrow without my dear friends, Connie, Kathy, and Caroline. I’m going to miss you. 😘 I walked Ferrol a bit this afternoon to orient myself. Found the starting point. We’ll see what I’ve gotten myself into tomorrow. 🤣🤔😬 I saw a number of people that look like they may be doing the Camino and starting tomorrow too. But hard to tell without backpacks on.Read more

    Ferrol to Neda

    Walking alone in a country where I don’t speak the language has been an adventure. 🤣 I was stopped within the first quarter mile by a very sweet elderly lady who was warning me with lots of hand gestures to be looking forward and back at all times to be safe alone. I pulled out my translate app to understand. It was all very kind how worried she was that I was alone. I could have told her my husband has been constantly telling me I have to keep my head on a swivel while I’m here. But I was afraid she wouldn’t understand that and would think it was some sort of exorcism thing. 😈 Another time two elderly gentlemen stopped me and tried to get me to go back. They thought I missed the path. They didn’t understand that I have the Wise Pilgrim app which was showing me an alternate greenbelt path along the river. They wanted me to walk along the road.. I definitely have a lot of help. ❤️And I’m appreciating the caring sentiment behind it. So far, I have not met any English speaking pilgrims along the trail. Perhaps tomorrow. But I’m getting along with Google Translate and hand gestures. The hotel I’m staying at tonight is very lovely. Not very many guests. It’s like an old mansion built on the water. A shorter day. I was done and showered by 3:30. Tomorrow will be a little bit longer and there’s a chance of 🌧️ . It’s all part of the adventure. Lol.Read more

    Neda to Pontedeume

    Short and easy day. I’m starting to find my Camino family. We are getting by in broken English and Spanish and smiles and gestures. Love this group of Basque people. They are excited that I am from Idaho. The lady of the bunch has been somewhat unfriendly but today she is starting to thaw. Weather started with light rain. But it cleared pretty quickly. And the rest of the day has been overcast and perfectly cool. Low 60s. Overall, a very pleasant day. Some along busy streets, some in the woods. Lots of little fairy doors in the trees. And fun gnomes.Read more

    Pontedeume to Betanzos

    June 3 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    21km today with some steep hills. It was straight up to head out of town. A lovely mix of pavement and woodlands. Found a box of oranges and water by the wayside. All donation based.

    There are fun little stands locals set up on The Way every so often to sell little things they’ve made and trinkets. I saw one today that had mole skin in little packages alongside the homemade necklaces and earrings. I guess they know their customers! Also donation based. I did grab a packet of that. But luckily I have not had any blisters. 🙏

    Saw a beautiful black lab that was just sitting there calmly looking out and watching the pilgrims go by. What a sweet boy. ❤️ And then there was this white horse that just roams free on the path. I met a lady from London today and she was telling me about this horse. Evidently, it’s pretty famous how it likes to be around the pilgrims.

    Started about 730 this morning and ended about 145. After showering I tried the famous Betanzos tortilla. It’s an egg potato omelette sort of thing that is famous for being very runny. Hope I don’t get salmonella. 😬

    Early night tonight. 💤 I want to be on the road earlier tomorrow. It’s the long day.

    Betanzos to Bruma

    June 4 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

    Well, the day I have been dreading finally arrived. Like all the hills I dread, this day turned out to be easier than my imagination made it out to be. Temperature was perfect - low 60s. It rained off and on. But it was a light rain. Poncho on. Poncho off. On repeat for most of the morning.

    The trails of the Camino Ingles from Ferrol and A Coruña have merged. So there are a lot more pilgrims on the trail today.

    This is a beautiful country. About half of the day was on gravel paths through the forest. The scenery really helped negate all the uphill. And there was a lot of it. But nothing I couldn’t handle.

    Only two more days until I get to Santiago and complete my Camino. It has gone so fast.

    Bruma to Sigüeiro

    Oh my feet are sore! 16.5 miles. So much concrete. Downhill a lot which feels like extra pounding on already weary bones. But it’s very pretty, the temperature is absolutely perfect and tomorrow I’ll be in Santiago. So no complaints here!

    Nighttime in Santiago de Compostela

    Last night I did the cathedral at night tour. What an amazing experience. The cathedral is so much quieter than during the day. It started at 10:30 and went till midnight. They only let you take pictures of certain areas. But the whole experience was just magical. You got to go behind the altar and touch the saint’s silver cloak. I said a quiet thank you 🙏 for a beautiful experience on the Camino, and in this chapel built about a 1000 years ago.❤️Read more

But it sounded kind of cool.1The legendary stones of Muxía, where the Virgin Mary is said to have arrived by stone boat.The sea, the lighthouse, and the endless waves of Muxía — pure magic at the edge of Spain. 🌊One of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Only 51 people live there.

    Santiago to Finisterre and Muxia

    As some of you know, a few days ago I decided to end my Camino in Santiago instead of continuing on to Finisterre and Muxía. It was absolutely the right decision for me.

    I realized that I wanted my Camino to end in the beautiful square in front of the cathedral. For me, that was the completion of the journey. Continuing on for six more days felt like extra credit I didn’t need. My heart was already full in Santiago.

    I feel so much peace, lightness, and contentment after this beautiful journey I’ve been on.

    So today, instead of walking that final route, I took a bus tour along the coast. It was breathtakingly beautiful and such a wonderful experience.

    My restless soul finally feels calm. I’m ready to come home tomorrow with a full heart, deep gratitude, and so much joy.

    And so, that’s it for this Camino journey.

    I’m looking forward to being back with the people I love most — especially my amazing husband, Dean, and my sweet little girl, Piper.
