    On way to Arcos for lunch

    Windy narrow roads. But lovely. The entire world smells like springtime flowers. I think my feet likely do too! lol.
    The breeze from yesterday has turned from carrying the sound of the ocean kissing the shore to the engines of cars wizzing by. The people inside all nodding and smiling. All waving. All saying BOM Camino as they almost graze me. Perfect day.Baca selengkapnya

    End of day 3 - Rates

    24 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    Feet gave up. Next stop was miles away; so I surrendered for the day. Only 10 miles. Time to pick up my pace tomorrow. Planning an early start as sunrises and sunsets are free! As are all the best things in life. Smiles, hugs, giggles, natures sounds. Course, food, bandages and bubbles to blow are important as well! Staying in a cute little town still using skeleton keys and old fashioned hospitality. I love it here. My feet not so much…. And yes, I did stop and use that swing set! Why not!     Day 4 begins

    25 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Oh what wonders are in store for me today? How fun it is to freely explore with no plans. Like a free fall for me, who had planned her life by the minute- no second. It’s like skydiving. And I am enjoying it. Still thinking there is a parachute packed in my bag somewhere. Lord knows it’s heavy enough!

    Changing my music today. From James Taylor back to the music of Les Mis. You know, my favorite book by Hugo. Not selecting it as a nod to my miserable feet and suffering hips. But because it is a beautiful story of life, overcoming trials, redemption, forgiveness, love and God’s grace; all of which are on this Camino. Song of the day- ONE MORE DAY! BOM

    Rest stop

    Wow. Little Georgia OKeefe, history, wild flowers and intimidating elevations. Best part of my morning was going the wrong direction and happily walking to nowhere when a garbage truck stopped me and urged me to turn around. He was frustrated with the language barriers but with hand movements and head shakes I realized he was saving me from myself. Sometimes we all need to be saved from ourselves.

    Lunch.

    25 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    So…. Interesting lesson at lunch on my Camino. Came up to a little cafe for travelers. Walked in and was met by a dear older cafe owner who asked what I wanted for lunch. I saw no menu, so said “can I have a tuna sandwich and a glass of sparkling water.” She said “yes, than asked me if I wanted baguette or sandwich bread”. I said baguette. Few minutes later the same lady brought me a ham and cheese on baguette. I said “oh, I ordered tuna.” She matter of factly said “ we only have tuna salad. Not tuna baguettes. Only ham and cheese baguettes”. To which I said “ok, I’ll have the ham and cheese”. She then said “did you see tuna sandwich on the menu? No, as we don’t have it. As a pilgrim, I see you have already learned the most important lesson. Be happy with what you have and what the Camino has”. How true. I have enough; I am blessed. And the ham and cheese hit the spot.

    Little rest while a little lost.

    I love getting lost. I truly do. Course, I also love finding my way.
    Today as I enjoyed walking along the old Roman roads to Santiago. I thought of all the footsteps before me; Spencer’s.. Andrews… romans, pilgrims when it became The Way of St. James and today, just the Way for modern pilgrims. Modern in their REÍ duds and new zip off pants and HOKA’s. And as I looked around, I realized how much things stay the same. We still walk, and eat, and play with children the same ways. We still plant seeds pretty much the same way. We still talk with friends and laugh, and enjoy each other. We still wave hello and stop at churches and smile when we see babies and puppies. It’s all the same human joys when you watch closely. BOM Camino. Enjoy. Life is fast; so take it slow.Baca selengkapnya

    Night night to day 4 - almost killed me

    25 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    16.3 miles. Felt all uphill. Warning- tonight’s post is less Victor Hugo and more Chris Rock.
    I had two firsts today:
    1- after 28 yrs, I finally used my Lamaze breathing techniques. Who knew?! Finally good for something. But only gave birth to more blisters. And…
    2- I once worked for a crude woman named Emma Kilvein. She swore like a sailor and used to say “I’m going to rip that person a new A#$hole!” I never quite knew what she meant by that. Until today. I think I at least know what it must feel like. I feel like I did 16 miles of squats today and can barely bend down to wash my face. lol.

    Midway day 5.

    Yep…7 miles in today and I’ve had an epiphany. This Camino leaves you lots of time to let your mind wander. I have decided it’s time for me to share these crazy adventures. Wasn’t sure I was ready to really date. Or that there was that One still out there…. But…. I just have to find Cat Stevens… turns out……
    He’s looking for a hard headed woman!
    And that I must be. Or I’d be calling an Uber lux to take me to a Hyatt right now. Nope! Not a quitter. Truck on, Lori Ann…. Cat Stevens (or whatever his name is now) is waiting. He won’t find one more hard headed than you!    Baca selengkapnya

    Made it - day 5

    26 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    15miles today! Half in the pouring rain! So, so wonderful! Poncho on, thumbs up and go! The smell of crushed eucalyptus in the rain! Spring flowers, babbling brooks, braying sheep, vineyards, green hills with yellow daisies. If you ever doubt there is a God; look at nature! It’s a gift of art and joy. And yes, at the top of a daisy covered hill; I did the Maria “hills are alive” twirl. And then it started raining and I sashayed right into signing in the rain! Yes, Spencer, I danced in the rain with my umbrella! Just like I used to do with you! Only this time I didn’t have a kid as an excuse! What a fun and exhilarating day!     Might need to stay awhile….

    The breakfast spot I found in the rain is operated by a slow moving and gentle man. I ordered ham and eggs. And he went across the street and collected the eggs from his hens. Then he cooked the breakfast. Then sat down and fell asleep. I cannot bear waking him up. I believe a nice large euro note on the table is in order. Bless this man.     Ok. Day six was a surprise.

    Beautiful hell! That’s today. It was stunning. But not a hike. A climb! Wow. Wow. Wow. I conquered it. Every corner was more of a climb. Right - climb. Left- climb. Wow. Glad I did not know what was coming. Best to just keep going and enjoying. Every single muscle in my body is alive. Met the best people today and we all had a world wide dinner together after cheering each other on. We did it! From Holland, chile, Poland, Australia, Puerto Rico. And we are all happy for each other and drank vino together. Lovely day. Lots of “the little engine that could” motivation. And I sang “zippity doo dah” a lot! Kept me going.     Brazil confession

    So last night I booked a nice private room in Sao Rogue. But in my fatigue and seeing “only one room left”, I booked the room in Sao Rogue, Brazil. When I finished the 80% uphill rocky climb and put my room in gps it was thousands of miles and an ocean away. So, Oopsie. But I saw a sign and got the last room in town! I’m a goofball!     Lunch break where ever I am!

    Today is just hiking, hiking, hiking. Listening to Hamilton. And just when my legs want to give up, I sing not gonna miss my shot!
    And then the weary stumble upon an oasis of bounties in the country. The Camino provides. Life is wonderful.

    Made it. Barely

    28 April 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    After the divine lunch and two (yep) nice glasses of wine. I barely had any steam. And of course I selected the room on the top of the biggest hill in town- off the Camino. Oh well.. what’s a few more steps.
    Ahhh. My room had a bathtub. I’ve been dreaming of a hot bath..
    fast forward. I am so sore; I can’t get out of the bathtub. I tried turning over and trying to crawl out. Nope. Legs too wobbly to stand. Quite the challenge. I’m ready for the special tub with the door. Well… I made it. To the edge of Portugal. Tomorrow- Spain. If I can get out of bed. No lessons today. Sore tendons, bones, muscles, fat, skin, even sore hair. All of me is sore. But very blessed. And I am appreciating parts of my body I never thought of before.    Baca selengkapnya
