    Pre flight relaxation

    December 21, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

In astonishing news, I was packed ahead of departure, left the house tidy (relatively) all laundry & washing up done.
Early National Express to Heathrow in anticipation of holiday traffic on M25 and predicted bad weather...none of which happened so I arrived super early at 3pm at The Hilton Garden Inn terminal 2.
I'd had a nice picnic planned for a long bus journey but only got through one beer and a couple of sausages rolls so I finished the rest in my room watching Stardust 🤣

  • Very very very long day...

    December 22, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Due to previous discussions with Expedia about the changed flights times Rhona had organised "assistance" for me between flights. However this also meant they tracked me through Heathrow trying to put me in a wheelchair. Found me at the gate & wanted to wheel me down the ramp! I managed it on my own 🤣
    Festive decorations on the plane!
From a pee at 10.30am in the terminal to 11 hours, four feature films, a bottle of red wine & 4 double g&ts later, I finally peed again. TMI? I know some of you are interested though...
Taxi met us at the airport according to plan and having not slept on the plane I dozed on the way to the hotel.
The hotel is as lovely as I remember it. And they greeted me with "welcome back" which was lovely.
Dinner at Nana's on the beach at sunset

  • Day of relaxation

    December 24, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Lovely walk along the beach before breakfast, then the glory of the best hotel buffet breakfast ever.
And down to the beach for hard core down time. Skipped lunch as brekkie was huge (&.included)
Sea was rougher than I remember from before and I got spectacularly dumped in a crashing wave but still glorious
Night wildlife walk in the hotel grounds produce large hermit crab (in a sea snail shell) some hatching cicadas, a couple of frogs and some flying foxes ( very large ones ,- up to 1.5m winb span) but sadly no slow loris this time.
Late dinner in town. Duck red Thai curry was fab!

  • Addendum

    December 24, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

I forgot to add that I had to be wheeled chaired between flights as timing was tight and by being in the chair they were responsible for getting me there on time 🤣
4 stewardesses seoerateky told me to wait until everyone else had disembarked the plane and one of them wanted to hold my hand walking down the aisle 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Unfortunately the girl that was pushing my wheelchair was tiny and struggled to get me up the slight incline from the plane to the teminal! It was mortifying & I had to get Rhona to get a trolley to take my hand luggage as well as all hers just to lighten the load on my carer 🤣
    But we got on ok.

  • Christmas Day

    December 25, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Up for a fast & hard circuit session at 8am followed by another lovely huge breakfast.
Followed by hard sunbathing alternating with sea dips & occasional beers. A Thai massage on the beach (view shown) Sundowners on beach.
Fabulous dinner at a previously undiscovered restaurant & learning (for me) how to play "2s & 7s" in cards which I rather excelled at. (Must have been beginners luck fuelled by the Thai herb mojitos)

  • Boxing day

    December 26, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Early breakfast at 8.15 then off on a trip bamboo rafting, a visit to the Thai Navy Sea Turtle conservation centre & Tsunami memorial (apt as it was 20 years ago today) then for a quick splash in a waterfall.
Then we had some fun meandering through an abandoned semi derelict hotel (Rhona takes me to best places 🤣) to photograph bats and some bee-eaters & saw a couple of water monitors too. Swim in the sea again as I was drenched in sweat. Walked back along the beach just in time for sundowners and I took a quick post sunset dip too.

  • Wildlife safari morning

    December 27, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Up at 5.15 am to be picked up by Jungle Joe & head off to Khao Sak National Park.
Didn't start well as it was very low cloud bad light and then about half an hour of heavy rain. Thankfully we didn't get too wet but it kept all the birds and critters away.
So we started looking for little things - found a rare Phuket horned lizard, an iridescent tarantula (who wouldn't come out of his hole for a photograph)
Then the rain stopped and we found a troupe of long tailed macaques with one pig tailed female who they had adopted as a baby and as a result a new hybrid baby with pig tail facial characteristics but a long tail. At this point my camera started to misbehaviour 🤷🏼‍♀️
We were told by the rangers that nobody had seen the otters today. So we didn't try for them but headed off to find the dusky langurs.
By the end of the morning (2pm) we were back at the car for lunch and knackered.
An afternoon of downloading & chill before early dinner at the hotel buffet cos we were too tired to go out.
No photos cos we were using real cameras!

  • Grump

    December 28, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Woke up with a streaming head cold, chesty cough & sore throat. And it's pissing with rain.
Rhona headed off to edit photos after breakfast & I went back to sleep till well past noon!
Made it out into town to see the tailor and order some clothes to be made (excited but anxious as I've never done anything like that ...)
Early dinner at another new restaurant recommended by the tailor - and as the other one he recommended waz our favourite so far we trusted him! And Mr Ju's was fab.

  • Snorkeling trip

    December 29, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Picked up at 8.30 by Tony short drive to the port where they were unloading the latest catch - truck beds full of ice!
Onto our long tail boat. I'm a bit obsessed by the engines in these. They take old diesel truck engines and repurpose them with whatever they have so they're all very different in configuration - the long tail being the extension pole between engine & prop. Means they can manoeuvre in shallower waters and turn in a very tight circle!
We stopped off a beach with a monkey group (pos macaques) to throw some bits of banana to them while they climbed into the mangroves to try to catch them. Some getting a bit of a dunking in the process!
Then onto our first dive spot - although the coral is very damaged there are signs of some regrowth & fabulous array of fish. We were given bits of banana to hold and a school of yellow & black fish came & ate it from my hand - there were a few who confused my fingers for banana and then my arm and ankle - no harm done!
Then I found a large squid (pronounced se - quid by the Thai which has caused a lot of confusion in restaurants) only to notice a much smaller female beside him. Both really well camouflaged apart from the iridescent blue line around their "skirts?" Then they went head to head and he embraced her there for quite a few minutes before letting go and he just hung around while she appeared obsessed with a crevasse between some rocks. I think I was watching se-quid porn! A new one for me.
Another sure another selection of fish. 3td site was off a beach covered in rings of debris brought in by the tide - plastic everywhere. Rubbish on the sea floor and very few fish. The monkeys kept trying to eat plastic & drink from empty plastic bottles! So sad.
Off to another location with a beautiful sandy beach a short walk in from the mangroves where we moored up. Lunch and a dip in the glorious sea. And then back via a market to buy some fresh ginger for hot tea. But what phenomenal lemongrass bunches!

  • Finally a day in the sun & sea

    December 30, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Nothing to see here 🤣 just a woman toasting herself then refreshing with a sea dip & then beer....rinse & repeat
(After a good hard session in the gym)
And collect my tailor made clothing - the tops are fab & really happy with the materials I chose. The trousers are great and if I'm less enthused it's more about the model they're on not the trousers themselves.
Dinner along the beach at My Friend Nik

  • New year's eve day...

    December 31, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Sun sea beer repeat & a massage on the beach somewhere in the middle. Had a James Bond moment after a somewhat curvy Thai lady suddenly morphed into a skinny young man at some point in the middle of my massage 🤣🤣🤣
Sundowners in the swim up bar ( some of the clientele are very young 🤷🏼‍♀️)

  • New year's eve party at the hotel

    December 31, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Shocked at many (hundreds) of Chinese lanterns were sent off from the beach ...nobody else seemed to notice them coming back down into the sea as more plastic pollution for turtles etc to eat. Once people had their insta moment they watched briefly & then walked away 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😭Read more

  • Last day in Khao Lak

    January 1, 2025 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Morning of glorious sunshine then we went into Khao Lak proper for a change of scenery - it was very dead but then it is new years day...
    Packing & bed

  • Departure

    January 2, 2025 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Early brekkie at 6.30 & we're off to the airport. Singapore Air are determined for me to use the wheelchair assistance at every point on the journey. So no duty free shopping for me!
At least today I'm being pushed around by a strong enough young gentleman. And to be fair we've not had to queue at baggage drop nor security. Wheeled straight to the gate 🤷🏼‍♀️Read more

  • Singapore

    January 2, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Rather fabulous hotel in the central business district. While we waited for our room we were given an introduction to tea by the lovely my Pau. Oolong with osmanthus flowers is now my new favourite but keep reminding myself of the overflowing shelf of teas from around the world at home...
Went to Chinatown for a mooch and had a lovely meal in Fortune Centre where we got chatting to a guy who went to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (next door to my college)

  • Gardens by the Bay

    January 3, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A sauntering sweltering return to the wonderful gardens by the bay to see the Supergrove of huge tree structures that are vertical planters which collect & recycle rainwater & generate solar power.

  • Cloud forest dome

    January 3, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Then onto the Cloud forest - a huge glasshouse with a 35m waterfall inside and beautiful selection of flora & some sculptures too. And blissfully cool

  • Friday night!

    January 3, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Chevy's bar meeting up with Rob after 13 years!
Much beer & tequila shots (served with orange slice - actually much nicer than salt & lemon) and appallingly bad pool playing 🤦🏼‍♀️ the former may have affected the later! 🤷🏼‍♀️Read more

  • Vertical planting/green spaces

    January 4, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Amazing use of trees & plants within innovative architecture
Talked my way into the Park Royal Collection Pickering hotel to get a key card to access the extraordinary garden level halfway up the building . But even inside it's plants and trucking water everywhere. I want to stay here next time I pass through....Read more

  • The journey home...

    January 5, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Arrived early at the airport to see the Jewel & butterfly garden...sadly the water was off at the Jewel but the butterflies were lovely

Followed by a trip to duty free ...helpfully they packaged the 200ml of gin separately to my litre of Tanqueray Malacca so I could drink it on the 14½ hour flight before my 1½ hour wait at Heathrow before the 2½ hour coach journey to Brighton!
So far...beer, gin, red wine ...and repeat

  • Bed

    January 5, 2025 in England ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

Just over 24 hours after I got up I'm finally in my own bed and before midnight (just) so I shan't turn into a pumpkin 😜

  • Tuesday wk 2

    July 8, 2025 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Another day another sore back, wearing trainers with cushioning instead of sandals really helps and at least it's much cooler now.
There was an epic tempest last night that had every door and window blowing open & banging shut.
Getting the hang of the tools now & getting braver with the diamond saw.
And before any says it - those are knobbly wader knees not anything else that came to mind 🙄🤪
    Off for massage...
