  • Melbourne International Airport

    October 9, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Arrived on time. The international departure area is a bit of building site at the moment. Resisted the duty free and spent up big on 2 bottles of water. Aircraft issues, parts flying from Sydney won't arrive in time for curfew in Narita. Plane change and new departure time of 12:30pm. Left on time, we had a smooth and uneventful flight. The food and snacks were good. We both watched the movie Hidden Figures which we both enjoyed. We managed to make up about 45 minutes and arrived at 8:15pm.Read more

  • Hotel Sunroute Plaza, Shinjuku

    October 10, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Immigration and customs were a breeze and it was a relief to see someone holding a sign with our name at the exit. We had a fast and comfortable trip into Tokyo, sharing the transport with another couple and a family of four, arriving at the hotel at about 10:30pm. Friendly check-in to hotel, had a shower and then off to bed after a long day!Read more

  • Meiji - jingu Shrine

    October 10, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We were up by 7am, had breakfast at the hotel and then off to explore Tokyo. Our first stop was Shinjuku station to buy a Pasmo card to use on the trains and subway. It's a stored value card which can be used at shops and vending machines as well. Our first trip was to Harajuku and the Meiji jingu forest. We did our usual trick when leaving the station and walked the long way round. We saw some interesting side streets on the way. The shrine is undergoing maintenance and was totally shrouded in plastic wrap. We then walked towards the Nezu museum past lots of very high end shops. When we arrived it was closed due to Monday being a public holiday. We intended to head to Shibuya next, it was only one stop away but when we left the train we were confused and thought we were at the other end of the line so we hopped on again and then realised our mistake. We ended up getting off at Ginza. We bought some lunch from the food hall in the Mitsukoshi department store (very similar to David Jones) and found a place on the street to eat it.Read more

  • Mt Fuji

    October 11, 2017 in Japan ⋅ 🌫 22 °C

Walked to the Keio Plaza Hotel which was the pickup point for our tour. Very busy with lots of tours leaving. We transferred at the Hamamatsucho bus station. It was around a 2 hour drive to the 5th station on Mt Fuji. Our tour guide was Toshi, he was a real character! We were very lucky with the weather. Clear skies, a little bit of wind and about 15 degrees. We had 45 minutes to look around. Not really long enough, it never is on tours. Next stop was for lunch at a traditional Japanese restaurant. The food was great although some explanation of what some of it was would have helped. After lunch we set off for Lake Ashi and a short cruise to catch the Komagatake ropeway to the top of Mt. Komagatake. We caught a few glimpses of Mt Fuji and the surrounding countryside. We left Hakone and made our way to Odawara Station to catch the  Kodama Shinkansen (bullet train) back to Shinagawa station where we changed train for Shinjuku. We watched several trains pass while we were waiting for ours. They are amazing to see, I managed to film one on the Gopro. The trains were very busy even though it was around 7pm when we arrived back at Shinjuku station. We bought some dinner at the station, which they very kindly heated up for us, before heading back to the hotel.Read more

  • Shinjuku and surrounds

    October 12, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Another early start today. This was our third day of temperatures in the high 20s. First stop was the post office to use an atm. Apparently Japanese bank atms may not except foreign cards so the post office is the place to go. We stopped at the Used Camera Box which is a tiny shop down in a basement. There is barely enough room for 3 or 4 customers. I found an old camera I was interested in but unfortunately it wasn't working. Next stop was the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. We went to the 45th floor observation deck of the North Tower. There was a line up for the South Tower for some reason (maybe a case of follow the leader). We spent some time looking at the view and made a few purchases including a small Lego like model of the Tokyo Sky Tree. We called in at the tourist information centre on our way out and were approached by a lady volunteer who asked if she could take us on a tour of the Government Assembly Hall. We accepted and had to go through security and be issued with visitor passes. She took us to the third floor and over a glass walkway linking both towers and then to the hall where the government meet 4 times a year. After leaving the building we had our photo taken with her. Next stop was the post office again to buy a stamp for the postcard Cathryn bought to send to Calvary. Looking for lunch was next. We ended up at Isetan department store and bought some sandwiches of all things. The way food to take away is presented is unbelievable. There doesn't seem to be any concern in Japan about plastic bags or excessive packaging in general. The way you are treated by staff is exceptional and makes any interactions a pleasure even with the language barriers. We took our lunch to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden which is an 50 hectare oasis in the middle of this frantic business and shopping district. We spent about 1.5 hours wandering around and tried a soft serve. After leaving we made our way to the Takashimaya Times Square to have a look at the Uniqlo clothing department. Seemed to be good quality and well priced. Next we tracked down another second hand camera store that I wanted to have a look at. Didn't have any luck here either so we made our way back to the Kitamura camera shop were I managed to find a 40 year old Minolta Hi- Matic F rangefinder camera in good condition for $30. We bought dinner (which they heated for us in the microwave) and beers from the Family Mart and ate in our room. Another long and tiring day.Read more

  • Tokyo to Yokohama

    October 13, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We caught the 10:30am train to Yokohama. The trip took around 30 minutes. We then changed to the subway for the last part of the journey to Nihon-Odori. It was about a 650m walk to Osanbashi Pier and we had a short wait to board the ship. We had lunch in the Lido and then we went to a Mariner Society welcome drinks. We sat with a couple from Canada who had done lots of cruises. They were both retired school teachers and had an Australian daughter-in-law. Not long after we sat down, Cathryn saw two familiar faces enter the Crows Nest for the Mariner drinks. It was Sarah and Ann, we couldn't believe it and neither could they! We met them on our first Holland America cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong in 2015. Certainly is a small world. After catching up, we finished unpacking and then got ready for the lifeboat drill at 7:30pm, followed by dinner at 8pm. We enjoyed dinner in the Main dining room followed by the show at 9:30pm. On the way back to the cabin we sat and listened to the Ocean Trio (formerly the Neptunes). The female pianist and singer were excellent.Read more

  • Shimizu

    October 14, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Our first port of call on this cruise and a short one, all aboard was 1:30pm. It is the port for Shizuoka and only about 44 kilometres from Mt Fuji. Unfortunately it was raining and there was a lot of low cloud so there was probably lots of disappointed people who were hoping to see Mt Fuji today. We missed the sign for the free shuttle bus and headed for the fish market instead. The Shimizu Market was about 1.2 kilometres from where the Volendam was docked. The market wasn't large but the seafood looked extremely fresh. There were stalls selling beautiful looking sushi and quite a few restaurants as well. We also saw the largest muscles ever. By the time we left the market the weather had improved. Our next stop was the S-Pulse Dream Plaza Shopping centre via the Shimazakinishimiya Shrine. We wandered the craft and food stalls for some time and then made our way back to the ship via Uniqlo. When we arrived at the dock a large group of kindergarten children were performing. They were amazing and all controlled by someone blowing a whistle. Back on board it was time for lunch accompanied by a very nice Alaskan Pale Ale (2 for 1 deal). After lunch we went to our first Cruise Critic meeting. We were hoping to meet some of the people we are doing our Beijing tour with but that didn't happen. We sat with a couple from Philadelphia who had been on the ship since Vancouver. Would we go to another, not sure. On our way back to the cabin we met up with a couple from Bundaberg we stood next to at the lifeboat drill. He loved to talk and they have travelled extensively, so it was easy to pass some time with them. After finally making it back to the cabin we changed and did 7 laps around the promenade deck. The Captain's toast was at 7:45pm and then on to dinner. It was gala night so escargot's were on the menu. After dinner we had a quick look at the shops and then headed to the show.Read more

  • Nojo-jo Castle

    October 15, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We left Osaka at 9am on a wet and overcast day for the 1.5 hour drive to Kyoto
It was Sunday but still plenty of traffic . First stop was at Nojo-jo Castle. Built in 1603, it was shoes off and no photography. The floors were designed to squeak to warn of intruders. It sounded like a flock of birds. Next stop was Heian Jingu Shrine.Read more

  • Heian Jingu Shrine

    October 15, 2017 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We walked around (in the rain) a traditional Japanese garden at this shrine. Lunch was next at the Kyoto Hotel Okura. We went to the restaurant on the 17th floor and had a magnificent Japanese lunch with a spectacular view of Kyoto. Sarah and Ann were on the tour as well so we sat with them. After lunch we went to the Kyoto Handicraft Centre. They had lots of high quality items but we only spent 45 minutes there which was nowhere near long enough. We then set off for our last stop Kinkaku (The Golden Pavilion).Read more

  • Sailing towards Hososhima

    October 16, 2017, Philippine Sea ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Had our first sleep in for a week. We had breakfast and then went to the talk on Hososhima and Nagasaki. The presenter became quite emotional when talking about the Peace Park and Ground Zero Museum. Lunch was next, then a talk and demonstration about Kimonos. We stayed for the next presentation on Tai Chi. Time for some exercise so 7 laps around the promenade deck. We had dinner in the Canaletto tonight which was compliments of Cruise About. We had an early booking so we went to the 8pm show, The Fly Rights from London.Read more

  • Takachiho Gorge and Shrine

    October 17, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We left the ship at about 9am for our tour to Takachiho Gorge and Shrine. It was another dull overcast day with a little drizzle. Sarah and Ann joined us again which was great. It was about an hours drive to reach the gorge. Our guide Norry was excellent. He is a TV presenter and commentator as well and gave us lots history and other general information about the area. We stopped for a short break on the way and we bought a Japanese sweet that a lady was cooking. It was about the diameter of a piklet and as thick as two with sweet white bean paste inside. I would describe it as interesting. Next was Takachiho Gorge. We walked down some steep steps into the gorge. Even though the weather wasn't kind it was still spectacular. We walked (slowly)through the gorge for around an hour and then a small shuttle bus took us back to the carpark. It was about a 10 minute drive to the shrine, our next stop. Although small it is very old and surrounded by cedar trees. One tree has two trunks and it is said that if you walk around it three times holding your partners hand you will have a successful relationship. Yes, we gave it a go! On the way back to the ship we stopped again at a small shop. On Norry's recommendation we bought a small bottle of Sake which we managed to sneak back on board. We also bought one of the largest apples I have ever seen for 200 yen. When we arrived back at the ship I purchased some grilled chicken which I took to the Lido for lunch. This was accompanied by the apple (very sweet). After our late lunch we went to the lower promenade to watch the sail away. There were some drummers performing on the pier. I headed back off the ship for some photos. Whilst there I was approached by a school boy to fill out a survey as part of his English studies. Not long after that two school girls approached me to do the same survey. I asked if I could photograph them and you can see the result. I also got a good shot of Sarah, Ann and Cathryn watching from the lower promenade. We were waved off by quite a few people which was great. We are sailing through a two metre swell at the moment and the ship is moving around quite a bitRead more

  • Nagasaki

    October 18, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We were up at 7am just in time to see the ship dock. Another dull and damp day. We left the ship at 9am and bought an all day tram pass for 500 yen. After getting some directions from the tourist information desk we caught the tram to the Peace Park. The park was crowded with school children and tour groups from the ship. The park features sculptures and a fountain that depicts butterfly wings. It is all aimed at promoting peace and making sure that nuclear weapons are never used again. Nearby is another park which was the epicentre of the Atomic Bomb. They have re-erected part of the wall of a church that was destroyed in the blast. Next we went to the Atomic Bomb Museum. A very well done and moving display of the destruction and misery that nuclear weapons and war in general inflict on ordinary people. It is hard to believe that out of a population of 240,000 around 73,000 were killed or injured and about 70% were women, children or elderly. We caught the tram back to Nagasaki Station and had lunch at a sushi train restaurant. We were made very welcome with hot towels and trays to put our bags on instead of the floor. Between each setting was a tap dispensing hot water, soy sauce, chopsticks and green tea powder. We really enjoyed our meal and at $12 for two, it was great value. After lunch we wandered around the shops and then caught the tram back to the ship. We had to change trams to go the last 2 stops, but there were so many people waiting we decided to walk. The rain was quite steady at this stage. Back at the cruise terminal we did a survey for the Nagasaki tourist organisations and we were given a gift in return. The sail-away was entertaining again with a school band performing. We gave the show a miss tonight and sat in the Ocean Bar and listened to the trio instead.Read more

  • Sailing the Yellow Sea

    October 19, 2017, Yellow Sea ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We had a relaxing day at sea today. First up was a talk on Tianjin and Beijing. The five yearly meeting of the communist party will be taking place while we are in Beijing and we may not be able to access Tiananmen Square. We will have to wait and see. Next we went to the new American Test Kitchen which has replaced the Culinary Arts Centre. We enjoyed the presentation on chocolate very much. Chewy chocolate brownies and Chocolate pots de creme were featured. No samples unfortunately. After lunch (twoTiger beers for the price of one and a submarine sighting we went to another cooking presentation on flavours of the Mediterranean. Seven laps around the promenade deck and it was time to get ready for dinner. It was gala night, so we headed up to the Ocean Bar to listen to the trio and a pre-dinner drink. Dinner was excellent. The food has been the best of all our cruises so far. The show tonight was the Volendam singers and dancers performing "Dance". We put our clocks back tonight so an extra hour in bed.Read more

  • Sailing towards Tianjin

    October 20, 2017, Yellow Sea ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Just a word about our cabin. This is our first time on Dolphin deck, the lowest passenger deck. We are near the forward stairs and also the stairway down to A deck (the gangway when docked). The cabin is very quiet, no noise from above or below. It is also very stable. We think it is bigger than the balcony cabin on the Noordam, the couch is almost twice as big. After breakfast we went to a virtual bridge and engine room tour in the showroom which was presented by the First and Third Officers, very interesting and informative. We visited the Future Cruise Planner Annette and she gave us some prices on cruises in Alaska. After lunch it was off to the movies to see Baby Driver. While we were doing our laps another guest pointed out the blue luminescence in the ships bow wake, apparently due to Algae Bloom. We were contacted by Dolores (the lady organising our overnight excursion to Beijing) and she informed us that she was in quarantine due to a fever. She may not be allowed off the ship, but her husband is still going to go. The ship docks at 8am but it may be 10am before we can disembark. We will have to wait and see.Read more

  • Tianjin to Beijing

    October 21, 2017, Bohai Wan ⋅ 🌫 15 °C

We arrived in port an hour early, around 7am. There was some sun this morning but you could hardly see it for the smog. We met up with the other members of our group (organised through cruise critic) at 9am. We have Scott and Rana from Las Vegas, Tony from Toronto, Andrea and her son Matthew from California, and Don and Mary also from California. We didn't disembark until about 10:15am and then we had to go through immigration. Our bus was waiting and we left for the Great Wall at 11am. We only had the bus driver and no guide. We were to pick him up nearer to Beijing. Well what a journey we had! We were travelling along well until 1pm when we came to a standstill. Due to the five yearly meeting of the Communist Party there are police checkpoints on the outskirts of the city. We were caught in traffic for an hour and 40 minutes. We finally passed the bottleneck and then made a comfort stop and picked up something to eat. Sometime later picked up our guide, Jackie. We finally reached the Mu Tian Yu section of the wall at around 4:30pm. We had about an hour of daylight left. We didn't realise what a steep climb it would be to actually reach the wall and because of the time constraints we ended up taking the cable car up and down. Some of the steps had a rise of around 750mm and others only 50mm. You had to watch your step very carefully. Taking photos was difficult but hopefully some will be okay. We caught the last cable car down and then made our way to the restaurant for dinner as we had missed lunch. The food was great but the service was fairly ordinary. Because of the traffic issues Jackie suggested we go to the Birds Nest and Water Cube tonight instead of in the morning. We were glad we did because they looked fantastic all lit up. We were then dropped off at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. It wasn't too bad but I don't think maintenance is a priority. We are leaving an hour earlier than scheduled at 7:30am (to beat the crowds), so another early start.Read more

  • Temple of Heaven

    October 22, 2017 in China ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After a late finish last night we had an early start at 7:30am this morning. First stop was the Temple of Heaven. We were there by 8am and there were already lots of people around even at that time. We wandered around and saw some of the local people doing Tia Chi. Next was Tiananmen Square. We were told on the ship that we probably wouldn't be able to get near it.Read more

  • Tiananmen Square

    October 22, 2017 in China ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We were lucky at Tiananmen Square, being a group we bypassed the lines and most of the security. There were a large number of people there but not too bad. The Communist Party "election" and meeting only had a couple more days to run. There was lots of security both in suits and uniform.Read more
