  • Heal of the boot

    July 11, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌬 90 °F

My phone thinks I'm in Albania. Where is that? Oh, across the sea I've been swimming in all day at the southernmost point of Italy, the heal of the boot, well almost. It's beautiful in Puglia, and hot, many towns with limestone streets and lots of octopus pulpo for seafood lovers. Boats and blue water. And everywhere there is plenty to see, and eat and to love.Read more

  • Puglia

    Jul 15–19, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

Today ends my trip in Puglia and I head to Napoli on the train for about a 6.5 hour journey leaving the South behind as I head up the boot. I have visited as many places as feasible traveling only by train or bus or taxi (no driving on these roads for me! Italian driving is a sport I do not play!)
I traveled down the coastal towns of Bari, Monopoli, Polignano, Lecce (inland), Otranto and neighboring Turkish beach resort, Ostuni, Locorotondo, Alberobello, and finally Martina Franca.

All the places have similar design of lime stone and whitewashed walls, winding alleyways, piazzas, small parks, little Trulli houses, and lovely views of the sea or the valley.

The cuisine is mostly fresh sea food on the coast, and a wide selection of pastries, pasta, focaccia, pizza, ponzerotto, meats cooked in the fire oven right in the butcher shop, fresh cheeses, olives, fava beans, and so much more! The Southern version of Italian food is buonissimo!

Olive trees are abundant, and there are also grapes, figs, pomegranate, oleander, roses, cactus, succulents, and other plants that thrive in the hot dry weather.

I have enjoyed the slow southern vibe and the warm hospitality of the Puglia region.

I will post a few photos here of the towns, then add the Valle d'itria on another footprint. It's hard to select only 20 photos for two weeks of travel!

  • More Puglia Valle D'itria

    July 15, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 97 °F

More photos heading inland to the valle d'itria, a hot yet breezy plain in the southern heel of the boot.

Stayed a few nights in a resort near Locorotondo and took day trips, then finished the southern journey in Martina Franca. Now heading north to Naples.Read more

  • Napoli #1

    Jul 19–22, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌩️ 82 °F

What an exciting crazy place to explore the heart of Italy. There are only 550 churches in Napoli, and the city is layered like a lasagna starting with thefirst layer of Greeks, then Romans, then everyone else built more and more on top. Spanish quarter with people and laundry and the mopeds the pizza pizza and pizza, oh my gosh it was so good. My jeans still fit thank goodness. But they are getting a little tight.Read more

  • Ischia Island time

    Jul 22–28, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Rode across the stormy tyranian Sea in a ferry on Monday to the island of Ischia for some R and R, escaping the busy Naples mainland.

For the first three nights I stayed on the west coast neat Forio in a old family owned sea resort with thermal pools, Western views of the sea and sunset, and beautiful gardens.

Because these islands are sitting over a giant volcano, there are natural thermal waters everywhere, and many places have developed their properties into multiple termal pools with the promises of curing all sorts of ailments by swimming in their warm springs.

The hotel where I stayed was beautiful.

Walking along the hillside I was surrounded by hanging gardens of familiar plants, but somehow they just seem more lush here. Magnolias, oleanders, palms, lantana, succulents, cactus, bougainvillea, petunias, hibiscus, irises, olives, figs, capers, dates and more.

I spent a day at the Poseidon thermal Spa and I will make a separate post on that because it was so beautiful there's no way I could put those photos into this overview.

Today I moved to a new place on the north side of the island closer to the town harbor of Ischia. There is a festival of Santa Anna here tomorrow complete with boat parades, fireworks, and dancing. I plan to watch it from a daily boat from the water. But today I will relax with a thermal bath and a view of the sea.

    La dolce Vita!

  • Ischia part 2

    July 24, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 81 °F

Stayed on the west coast near Forio for 3 nights, enjoying the scenery and the sunsets before moving to the north port of Ischia for the next 3 nights.

Spent the day at the Poseidon thermal spa, an adult playground of thermal pools heated by the volcanic waters below the island. Dozens of pools at varying temperatures hot, warm, cold, and even a natural steam sauna inside a grotto cave, fueled by a hot spring running through the stones.Read more
