    Day 1

    June 11, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Pretty uneventful trip to Heathrow and good flight . We were met by our taxi driver David , he and verity spent most of the journey discussing the trials and tribulations of Manchester United . Our boutique hotel is pretty central and is in an apartment block occupying the first floor .
After dropping our cases we headed to the Danube , taking in the sights as we went . A war memorial ( unusual fountain that senses you are there so you can walk into the middle ) and the parliament . It was lovely in the warm evening sun . We saw the poignant Jewish shoe memorial on the river banks and the chain bridge. We then headed for a light tapas meal as we had quite a lot of food on the plane ( surprisingly for a short European flight) .
First impressions are good, magnificent grand architecture, wide boulevards and a lot of statues.

    June 12, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We walked our socks off today . We had early tickets for the parliament building. Very impressive and opulent but some areas were no photos.
It’s been a very grey day today but good for walking .
We then made our way down to the chain bridge and crossed the Danube and took the funicular up to the Buda castle area . We walked around the many impressive buildings and admired the views back to Pest . We had a light lunch at Jamie Oliver’s. Then walked further down river over the Elizabeth bridge and up the main shopping street . Had a little browse in Zara as it started to spit with rain . We then headed to St Stephen’s basilica ( he of good king Wenceslas fame ) . Very richly and ornately decorated and houses St Stephen’s hand , which is a highly prized relic. We also went up to the roof and walked around the outside of the dome which gave great views around the whole city .A pretty tiring day , we went to a restaurant nearby serving nice Hungarian food .
In liberty square we saw the statue of Ronald Reagan , erected because of his efforts in ending the Cold War .

    June 13, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Walked up to the Szechenyi thermal baths . We opted not to go into the naked section ! They were pretty crowded and after 1.5 hours we had had enough . Walked around city park and saw the very modern Neprazji museum and climbed up both sides of the living roofs . Then did a hop on hop off bus trip - saw many streets we had not walked down . Got off near the Westend shopping mall but were unimpressed - all the well known brands - not yet really seen any authentic Hungarian shops . This evening did a night time cruise .Read more
