    After walking through the old town, we made our way to Ellie Beach. It was a typical European beach; crowded, warm aquamarine water with beach chairs to rent. The boys enjoyed the diving platform. After, we walked along the shoreline back to the ship.Read more

    After a 45 min wait, we got on the Sky Ride. Just slightly scary but mostly enjoyable.

  • Day 4: Valetta, Malta

    We woke up to the beautiful sights in the port of Valetta, Malta. After some haggling with pushy tour guides, we decided to go with a local HOHO bus company to see the sights.

    The medieval city of Mdina was beautifully restored to its glory days with beautiful flags and limestone buildings throughout the entire city. On the way back to Valetta, the boys slept through an extremely hot bus ride.Read more

  • The swimming hole

    After a near death encounter with a HOHO bus and Neil, we decided Not to go to the Blue Grotto but walked to the local swimming beach near the cruise ship terminal. There, we had a swim and met Joyce and Vince, the Malteses who have never left their island, at their beach house and enjoyed coffee with them.Read more

  • Day 5:. Messina, Sicilly

    After wading our way through the sea of tour guides, our family of 4 decided to see Messina by foot. Our first stop was the Piazza Duomo where we sat through part of a sunday mass.

    We then hiked uphill to a view point at another church. The streets were very dirty and big piles of garbage were everywhere.

    Next stop was the Shrine of the fallen soldiers of the world wars. Most tourists just stopped to take a picture but we were fortunate enough to go on a guided tour with Maria, a volunteer student. She gave us a really good understanding of the monuments, the region and the effects of the 1908 earthquake and tsunami.Read more

  • Beach

    The boys insisted on a beach stop after seeing all the old stuff. Neil did his 1 geocache and then we took the tram towards the beach. On the way we met Ashley and Cary, the honeymooners from N. Carolina. A couple of local girls told us to wait for the bus to a nicer beach. After waiting for 40 min in the scorching heat we decided to just go to the closer beach. At the beach, we met up with the rest of our gang.Read more

  • Day 6: Napoli, Italia

    We arrived in Napoli bright and early to make the trek to Pompeii. Once again, we were accosted by taxi drivers. We then walked to the brand new metro which took us to the train station. Neil is paranoid about pick pocketers.Read more

  • Pompeii

    We met up with an American family from Washington DC when we discovered we had to switch trains to get to Pompeii Scavi. We joined an English tour led by our knowledgeable and lovely guide, Paola. Pompeii was instantaneously preserved under 10m of burning ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79ad. It was a most fascinating tour.Read more
