  • Neddies Harbour, Norris Point

    August 7, 2015 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

It is our last day together with Paul and Cheryl in Norris Point. We awoke to a cool, overcast morning and Janet and Don cooked fresh mackerel for breakfast. When walking last night, Den and Janet spoke with some fishrmen just coming in for the day. They offered the fresh caught fish and it was great. Soon after, we left for Woody Point. About an hours drive around Bonne Bay, we visited the Discovery Centre and then did a 4k hike up to the Tablelands - flat top mountains! Went in to Woody Point for a quick, late lunch and walkabout town. And picked up a fresh raspberry pie for dinner.
Unfortunately Paul and Cheryl now need wheel bearings on another wheel. We've found one they can pick up in Cornerbrook but will have to be installed in North Sydney, NS on Monday.

  • Neddies Harbour to Clarenville

    August 9, 2015 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Drove back across the province, missed Stephenville but managed to find a Walmart in Grand Falls-Windsor - to buy our seal oil! Should have a years supply. On to Gander where we enjoyed our chicken sandwiches. We checked in to St. Judes Hotel. Nothing special but clean and reasonable. We again enjoyed great fish and chips for dinner. A quick drive through town and early to bed.Read more

  • Clarenville to Spaniards Bay

    August 9, 2015 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After a quick breakfast at Timmy's we set off for Placentia. Toured the fort at Castle Hill with a self guided tour. Stopped in Placentia for lunch (fish chowder for them, pancakes for me). We are now on our way to St Mary's Ecological reserve at the bottom tip of the Avalon Penninsula to see puffins and gannets.
Then a couple hours back to Conception Bay on the Avalon penninsula to The Spaniards Room Heritage Hous B&B. The house is 114 year old and we stayed on the 3rd floor where there were 2 bedrooms and a small bath to share. They suggested we go to Lynda's Home Cooking for dinner in next door Bay Roberts. When we got there they had run out of food (must be a good place!) so we ended up at a chinese place and had probably the worst chinese ever. But that's ok - all other meals have been great. Back to the room for a glass of wine and a game of Uno - Don won!

  • Spaniards Bay back to St. John's

    August 10, 2015 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Monday morning, raining pretty heavy! Our hosts Greg and Lorraine Miller fed us a great breakfast and Greg told us some history of the house. He also told us what to see on a scenic drive along HWy 60 back to St. John's. Mad Rock is at the tip of Spaniards Bay, went through Port au Graves - small fishing village and Hibbs Hole (now Cove). An original home and school are still there, though locked at the time. On through Cupid - first community settled by the english in North America in 1610. Lunch was at Cupid's Haven - built in 1914 is an Anglican Church, it is now a B&B and restaurant where we had fish cakes, baked beans and home made mac and cheese - yum! Pressing on through the rain (with sunny breaks now and then) we found our way along Hwy 60 and Conception Bay then back across the penninsula to St. John's and the Hampton Inn at the airport. Time to repack the bags and the walking sticks, finish the wine and enjoy the last stories with our great friends Janet and Don. Though the weather hasn't been what we would have ordered, it's been a great trip. The sun shone when we needed it to, beautiful scenery, a thousand photos and lots of laughs.Read more
