    Norham to Berwick

    15 de mayo de 2024, Escocia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    A stunning day.
From the war memorial in Norham to the banks of the Tweed, to the first suspension bridge in the world and the amazing Border train bridge, it’s been a wonderful last day.
Repairs were underway to Berwick bridge but you could still walk over it. We headed to the beach to complete the walk and then walked the town walls. Berwick is a fascinating place.
We had a celebratory pizza to share and a glass of Prosecco to celebrate .
A great time with a wonderful friend. X

  • Westnewton to Norham

    14 de mayo de 2024, Escocia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A warm start to the day as we headed up along side of Bowmont Water near the remains of a dismantled railway line.

Our route took us past the site of the battle of Flodden Field and then down to the village of Branxton, home to the world’s smallest visitors centre.
Our lunch stop was at Twizel Castle.
We then dropped down to the Tweed for the remainder of our walk to Norham, which had far too many nettles for our liking.

  • Side of Cheviots to Westnewton

    13 de mayo de 2024, Escocia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A glorious morning after heavy overnight rain.
We were sad to leave our beautiful camping spot.
We had a couple of miles up to ridge where we joined the Pennine Way for a little while, before branching off to go up The Cheviot (2667ft).
Once we were up and over the views were of bluebell and gorse paths and a small stream for a lunch stop and some feet cooling.
We also had another river to ford.
We are now staying with Mary’s friends, Les and Nancy and their very cute dog, Mavis.

  • Rothbury to side of Cheviots

    12 de mayo de 2024, Escocia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    Another warm and sunny day.
On our way to Alwinton we saw a hare, but it was gone before I could get a pic .
We also saw a tipped over crop sprayer. Not sure how that happened.
We had to ford the river Coquet, which involved boots round our necks and one of Mary’s poles each. It was nice to cool our feet down.
Lunch stop was at Alwinton before we headed up in to the Chiviot Hills on Chennell Street, an old Roman road.
Not sure what the table and chair were doing on route.
Our camping spot for the night couldn’t be more perfect, with a beautiful burn for a swim and a sheltered spot for the tent.

  • Elsdon to Rothbury

    11 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

A glorious morning, but sadly we slept through last nights aurora.
A mix of farmland, forest and heather today.
A lovely lady who worked in yesterday’s B&B took our tent, stove and spare clothes to Rothbury for us. This made for an easier days walk in the heat.
We finished the day with a paddle in the River Coquet and an ice cream.

    Mileage today 14 miles.

  • Wark to Elsdon

    10 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Over the lovely bridge in Wark and straight up the hillside. Beautiful villages surrounded by farmland , open moors and forests.
The high points were hearing my first cuckoo, finding a sheep fold full boulders done by artist Andy Goldsworthy, an old railway line and a roe deer.
End of day was in Elsdon at the Bird in Bush which overlooks a lovely village green.

After a breezy start from the racecourse we headed down in to Hexham for a Greggs omelette baguette .
By the time we finished the sun was out and stayed with us all day. Lovely countryside and a coffee near Hadrian’s Wall.
Days end at Walk and a night’s B&B at The Battlesteads.

  • Allensheads to Hexham racecourse

    8 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We set iff straight up the hill from Allanheads to some wonderful tracks. These are used for grouse shooting, but thankfully we’re out of season.
We also met a dry stone waller.
We were on the moors for about 2.5hrs before dropping back down to farmland and riverside walking.
We made it to the Dipton Mill Inn for lunch before our last up hill climb of 1.5 miles to camp at Hexham race course.

  • Garrigill to Allanheads

    7 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

With clothes and boots dried, we at off over the moors, heading to Allenheads.
We walked passed all sorts of mine workings and lime kilns.
The ground was a bit boggy in places after yesterday’s rain but we made good time.
We had a lovely lunch at the Himmel cafe in Allenheads while we wait for pub to open next door, which is our B&B for the night.
A few too many dead things on the walls in the pub for my taste!

  • Dufton to Garrigill

    6 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Well it rained on the way to this mornings drop off point, but by the time we were there the rain had stopped even though the mist covered the tops of Dunn Fell.
We started up the hills on the Pennine Way, which I did in 2019, but on reaching the “golf balls” on Great Dunn Fell, we branched off over Moor House Nature Reserve.
We had a good lunch( thanks Simon and Lesley for the very nice date flapjacks) and then joined the River Tune Trail.
Having thought we’d missed the possible thunder storms and being only an hour and a quarter from Garrigill, we thought we were home and dry . How wrong we were!
We got soaked to the skin. Thankfull we could upgrade from campsite to bunk house, which we have all to ourselves .

  • Askham to Dufton

    5 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Well it might not have been sunny, but at least it stayed dry.
A short walk from Askham was the impressive Lowther Castle which is undergoing restoration .
The parkland made a pleasant change from Lakeland fells.
We also passed the original water supply for the village of Bolton.
The big surprise of the day was a surprise visit from two old friends, Huw and his wife Allison. We had a lovely cup of tea in Morland with them.
A relatively easy day ended with another cafe stop in Dufton with Simon and Lesley, who are again putting us up for the night.
We had another yummy platter once back at their home.

  • Below High Street to Askham

    4 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Not a day for photos. Mist on the fells all day till about an hour before the end.
Mary helped keep three walkers on the right path for Wainwright’s C2C.
Sadly no amazing views but we did see the end of Ulswater and there’s a blurry of Lowther Castle. We had a lovely lunch at the Queen’s Head in Askham with our friends Simon and Lesley who are looking after us and picking us up for the next two days.
Warm bath and and yummy food. Who could ask for more?

  • Skelwith Bridge /below High Street

    3 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A shorter day today, mainly in sunshine but with the threat of thunder and lightening. As a result we’ve opted to camp low.
Lovely views of Windermere to start the day, breakfast at Greggs in Ambleside and tea and cake in Troutbeck.
Tent pitched by Hagg Gill. ( No comments about Mary and I being the hags!)
Veggie Cornish pasties for tea with a view back past Troutbeck Tongue and the sound of bleating Herdwicks.
Belated pic of last nights tea.

  • Wasdale Head to Skelwith Bridge

    2 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

A beautiful morning and an amazing view back down Wasdale as we started up Great Gable.
The 2700ft ascent was tough going at times, with a scramble toward the top. This wasn’t helped by the strong wind and even stronger guests. But we did have glorious sunshine all day.
The decent down to Sty Head Pass took a while and we eventually had lunch looking down in to Langdale.
We passed lots of Herdwick sheep on our way to our campsite just above Skelwith Bridge near a
    Ambleside.

  • Ravenglass to Wasdale Head

    1 de mayo de 2024, Inglaterra ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After a slightly bumpy start as a result of a late train in to Carlisle, resulting in missing the train to Ravenglass and an hour wait for the next one, the walk starting in glorious sunshine.
The route took my friend Mary and I through the beautiful gardens of Muncaster Castle and the amazing rhododendrons.
Having started near the Eskdale railway , we met up with it again at Dalegarth where yummy ice cream was available.
The walk from there became darker, as low cloud and drizzle stayed with us to Wasdale Head. We’ve a little field by the pub to camp on tonight and maybe some refreshments.
    15 miles done today.
