    Happy Anniversary to us!

On the road again....our Willie Nelson Rv trip song from our big family trip 30 years ago when we left Malibu, CA to find our new home in Jacksonville, Oregon. Now we take off again, just Randy and I, on a fun 6 week road trip to Indy 500, DC and Florida.

First stop was in Lakeview Oregon. We didnt get far since we left at 4 pm after having to get the RV fixed again. Pretty plain looking RV park was equipped with everything: pull through site, full hook ups, wifi, laundry, showers, doggie playground. Great first stop! We are on our way to a great adventure!

  • Anniversary night at Walmart!

We made it to Elko, Nevada so we could spend the night in the Walmart parking lot! Here's the Atlas we used! That was our goal! Oh.. and don't run into anything...and don't make any bad choices (Rachel's parting advice to her parents!) It was a good day!

  • Wyoming , here we come!

Heading to Rock Springs,Wyoming.. ..Randy just sets the cruise, turns on the music or audio book, and drives all day straight down 80 East....while I move from my front seat recliner to the couch, to the bed, to the fridge, to the bathroom...REPEAT many times!

  • Fun Facts

Drove through Utah (Salt Lake City in rush hour was a bit stressful). Now we are in Wyoming. Did you know Wyoming is the least populated state in the U.S? so we will be driving through lots of plains and hills. Their flag has a bison on it (NOT THE SAME AS BUFFALO) and their most popular food is bison burger. Because of the high altitude and weather they have the largest industrial wind production facility in the United States. It is the home of Yellowstone and Grand Tetons (maybe next year's trip...). Hey, once a teacher, always a teacher!

  • Unexpected stop=adventure?

Well....we are stuck near Rawlings Wy for the rest of the day. Hwy 80E is closed from Rawlings to Laramie till 9 pm for high wind advisory. One guy that just came that direction saw a car and 5th wheel blown over to its side. We are at a truck stop and all the trucks are stopped here and will resume driving at 9. We are parked next to a line of trucks as a winbreak and are still rocking side to side. So we are going to stay put till it stops. It's an adventure!

  • Beat the Snow!

We are getting out of this area early because it's supposed to snow and get to 20s. Onward and upward we go!

  • Be Strong and Courageous

Another day, another Walmart. 3 things you can always count on driving across the states: God, Starbucks and Walmart! They are always the same! RVing is not for the faint-hearted! It sounds glamourous, and it is a very comfortable way to travel if you're going to drive, but it has its challenges: weather, things breaking, and trucks. Yesterday was a tough day of road closures, highway wrecks because of winds, snow and sleet. That was the day the windshield wipers decided not to work unless you manually pushed the button, but the truckers rush on past you. I admire truck drivers even more now, but there sure are a lot of them on the road. RV driving is a test of your patience, flexibility, problem solving, and attentiveness. So our scripture for the trip is Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." And our mantra everyday when anything happens, good or bad, is:
    IT'S AN ADVENTURE!

  • TODAY IS THE DAY

Today is the day we will arrive to our first destination in Indiana, the 9th state we've covered!: Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana. Each state is unique in scenery, services and quality of roads....that's all we've really seen......now no more driving for a few days! We're going to hang out with some friends at a farm until it's time to go set up at Indy on Wednesday. . Stay tuned.

  • A day of rest

Wow, that took a long time to get here! I didn't even drive, but I'm tired! It will be great to have a day where we don't have to turn on the generator to have coffee, turn on the water pump to wash your hands, pull in the slides, pull up the levelers, move everything so it wont slide around, secure all the cabinets so they wont open. All that and more actually, just to be able to start up and drive for hours....let's not even talk about navigating to the next stop, finding a place to stay, looking for a truck stop with cheap diesel, stopping to fix lunch, arriving to a place for the night, putting levelers down, putting out the slides, fixing dinner, washing dishes...no wonder I'm tired.....none of that today! Just rest...

  • Moonshine

The highlight of the day is a little hamburger place in the middle of nowhere that is only open from 6 am to 12:30 that attracts people from everywhere! It's called Moonshine. Moonshine Store - Home
https://www.moonshineillinois.com/ Pictures to come....the rest of the day is about getting prepared to leave the next day for Indy. Getting stocked up on food, fixing little things on the RV, emptying and refilling the tanks. We are learning a lot from friends that have been going to the Indianapolis 500 for the last 26 years. They've got it down to a science, so we just do what they do!

  • IT'S TIME

It's time to head to Indy! Moving out of the farm and going to the track. We will caravan there and then wait to get in.....but we can't get into the lot where we will park until tomorrow. Hey, that's the drill! I'm just along for the ride! Ok let's start collecting info on the race and getting into spirit of the day!
    https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/full-in…
We made it to the track. We are already all lined up ready to move out of this field to our RV spot that will open at 8 am tomorrow. This is where we will sleep tonight so for now...grab your chair...let's all hang out for the evening.

  • It's a race

It's a race even to get into our RV spot! There are open fields marked off with 20×40 ft. spots. You have a pass for a certain lot. We are in Lot 4, the closest one to the track. It's first come first serve. The lots open at 8 am so we were in line already to try and be the first ones in. Our group makes a rectangle with our RVs to make a compound with canopies and tables and chairs in the middle to eat and hang out. Our friends have been staying in the same area for years . It's close to a side gate to more easily get to the track. I told you they've got it down! I'll let you know who wins the race.
We won! We got in to our area which they had already staked out to save. Left at 645 to wait in the line to get in Lot 4. It was viscious, man. People trying to cut in and go ahead....the first aerial picture is from last year. Much planning goes into how to fit everyone in. They did it after much maneuvering and we got all set up before it started raining...now we can take a nap!

  • CARB DAY

Today is Carb Day at Indy. See photos for details and history of carb day. Basically we go to watch the cars do a practice (not full speed) at 11. Then a Pit Stop Competition at 230 and a concert at 330. It's supposed to rain in the afternoon so it may cancel the competition but not the concert. It's been raining off and on but we are all under pop up tents or
RV awnings. The group signs up for cooking and clean up so we all eat together. Now that we are here, the excitement is building toward the big race on Sunday.
We just watched the practice car race to test the cars for any last minute problems. Just a taste of the race on Sunday....definetely need earplugs! I have never seen so many people in one place! Next is the Pit Stop Competition. The fastest one gets $100,000. That would make me go fast!

  • SNAKE PIT

We survived the Snake pit. Bruce Springfield (80's rock star. Jessie's girl was his famous song) started off there with a concert yesterday afternoon. Today the music continues all day with many musicians. This huge area was full of interesting people. An hour yesterday was enough.
Today we will go to the track again to meet the drivers on Legends Day and go to the museum of every car that won the race since its beginning 106 years ago. And there's a parade with all the drivers. Then we will prepare for race day.

  • BIG RACE

Big Race is today! 33 cars race 500 miles at 230+ mph. It will be exciting and loud! The excitement began at 530 am with booming fireworks, drums banging, cymbals clanking, music blaring with heavy base rumbling your insides. We are walking to the track at 10 am for the pre-game festivities including a marching band and a patriotic salute to veterans. The race starts at 1245 for 3 hours. We are sitting at the finish line. I'll let you know who wins! Ericsson won. The winner gets a huge wreath around his neck, drinks a jug of milk, takes a victory lap and kisses the original bricks preserved on the track. That's tradition!

  • MOVING ON

Now we can move on to meet Justin who will handoff Lawson for the next leg of our trip! We will start driving toward D.C. and get ready for some history lessons. Stay tuned for our next adventure.

  • BAD DAY

I guess we were due for a bad day. We've been stuck all day with an electrical problem trying to find an RV Repair guy. All the shops are booked and take no pity on travellers passing through. The mobile rv mechanics dont call back. Finally got one to come this evening. Thankful for that! Also Randy is not feeling well. I guess a day of rest was needed. God, Walmart and Starbucks helped keep us going! Hopefully back on the road tomorrow.

  • SLOMO

Housekeeping in slow motion: had to get rid of everything in the fridge from being without power all night and day yesterday, doing laundry in our mini washer/dryer because this nice KOA has no laundry room, cleaning and trying to keep our small quarters in order. This is the no fun side of RVing. Welcome to RV reality. We are thankful for the mobile RV Repair guy that replaced the GI swith controlling all the appliances, AC and plugs on one side. It was worth the high cost to be functional again. Today we keep on driving.....we'll let you know when we get there.
After driving for just one hour (on a straight freeway from rest area to rest area) I can appreciate even more Randy driving for hours and hours. So thankful he likes to drive.

Today we are in Gettysburg. They have an excellent museum. I have a feeling we will be here all day because these two read every single thing.

  • LET'S DO DC

Let's start the DC tour with the Smithsonians: American History and Natural History. There are 19 Smithsonian museums...we may not see them all. Infact, now that we are in it, I think we will only see the American History Museum. The part about all the wars is Lawson's favorite! Quite an amazing museum! We'll save the Natural History museum till tomorrow. We learned how to navigate the Metro. We found a Farmer's Market for lunch. All in all a great day!

  • IT'S NATURAL

It's time for the Natural History Museum. So much to see: too much to list (see map in pics)! Today was super crowded in the museum because it was the weekend. Also the metro was full because there weren't as many trains running. We were challenged in the metro trying not to look at a guy urinating at the closed exit door then watching the trails move all the way down the car for the rest of the trip...(see last pic). Lawson was so tramautized he wouldn't even read his book...that says a lot! Oh and also the guy sitting behind Lawson stole his backpack from his seat (with Canon camera in it). Fortunately we noticed it was gone right before we went out the door...I ran back to his seat, looked under...and there it was by the guy's feet...he played dumb and lifted it up "this bag?" Welcome to DC!!

  • BIRTHDAY BOY

Today is Randy's birthday! For his special day we are going to Mt. Vernon. It's about 40 minute drive so we will leave early to make it for a 10 am apptm for a Hamilton tour (Lawson's choice), then at 11 am for a garden tour (Linda's pick), then lunch at the cafe and a tour of the home at 1 (Randy's favorite). Another day with lots of walking...we are pretty tired with achy feet by the end of each day, but talking about all the great things we saw.

  • NATIONAL MALL

Back to DC, back on the metro, back to the mall to go around to all the monuments. We're going to try and have a fun and easier on the feet day. Ill let you know how it goes! It was still a lot of walking but at least we took the morning off to relax, have lunch at ihop and not start till 3. There's a circulator bus that makes a loop around the mall you can hop on and off but we had to wait way more than 10 min they advertize to get back on. I was so dead when we got back I went straight to bed.

  • CHANGE THE GUARDS

Today we go to Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Their precision and ceremony every 30 minutes are quite impressive! It is sobering to see all the tombstones and to see how large the cemetery really is. So glad we had a tram tour to drive us around and explain everything. It was an easy walking day but we are still so tired. ...I think it's all catching up with us. Two more days of sightseeing.
