    The start

    25 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Mags saw me off at home and Math at the airport.
Flying Emirates A380 business class is literally the dream of a lifetime come true. Iv pushed it back in the truck at the airport .I've stood underneath it on the airfield and I had the saddest mission in chaplaincy to go on it whn a baby had died on board
It is thanks to my wonderful mum and dad that I am able to realise this dream ..as such it's proved utterly overwhelming emotional..but absolutely beyond expectations champagne on arrival in my seat ...a lie flat bed ,quilt pillow, pyjamas, slippers and toiletries provided, a menu and wine list, food on plates with the heaviest silver cutlery . I had the best time with the crew who absolutely took on board it was a special experience.
Arrival in dubai at 1am meant I rediscovered the foot massage place math and I last used 20yrs ago ..dubai airport is insanely huge ..a lot of walking and a bus ride to the next equally fabulous business class flight . I had breakfast during the flight but the joys of time difference meant it was actually 5pm.on arrival in osaka
Osaka airport is immense..had to find the train station to activate my rail pass and another place to activate local WiFi....
I should have met with a meet and greet person but never.managed to.find them so solo mission started immediately
Had enough by this point and got a taxi..which was very expensive.
Hotel is nice..and the room number...1825 ...my mums birthday date (18/3/25) .....poignant!
Went out and found the Japanese Macdonalds equivalent...it was 9pm. But osaka was buzzing and lots of skateboarding happening 🙄
My room.is on the 18th floor
I'm 9hrs ahead of uk for now
Hopefully Iv set this up.to be interactive, please let me know , via WhatsApp if not

  • Japan for starters

    26 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

In deciding to come to Japan I typically gave no thought as to survival in terms of food ....breakfast turned out to be lots of fish in soup and veg in soup which I don't eat ...so.my portions of just pineapple were pro rata expensive
coming to the hotel from the station proved iv too much luggage even tho it's only 12kg for 4months and so this morning armed with Google translate I set off to find a post office, to send a box of clothes home..walking round osaka with my plastic bag of clothes, bag obtained frim the room.cleaners I probably looked homeless..any way mission accomplished. I also requested room change and am now on the premier floor at the top of the hotel...I'd been too hot last night and didn't sleep...I'd not felt any jet lag.
Having conquered the post office i carried on mooching and got chatting to an American girl...she'd arrived yesterday too
I discovered the canal and as a ride was due to leave i got a ticket...if anyone can explain what's happening in the video..feel free....like no.other canal trip @

  • 26th march osaka

    26 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

The journey from.airport to the hotel proved tht despite only 12kg luggage it's still too much. Today's mission to find a post office.
After breakfast, an experience of funny fish and funny veg in soups....which i avoided and stuck to recognisable pineapple. I set out with a bag of clothes to find the post office....Google translate, a very patient lady and an hour later, clothes are in theory on their way back to the UK
The shops don't seem to open till 10...people queue to wait fir opening. The shops are on every level from cellar to skyscraper .there is a covered street as it is hot but then it's open to the side street which gives a breeze ...I wandered round the shops and discovered there was a canal and a cruise in
    10mins so bought a ticket..
    Mad experience but fun...
Found a place for lunch where Italian style bolognase was.with ham and cheese ..!
bk to the hotel where because I complained last night i was too hot.and didn' tsleep..iv now got the penthouse (to shut me up)had to pay the difference
    It's amazing!
The concierge arranged for me to meet his friend at the sky tower ....i was able to jump the queue and have a personal guide via Google translate we had a lovely chat
    So many people wear masks
People are lovely lots of bowing and money is put on a tray but card is ok
Taxi drivers wear suits and some wear caps

  • Hiroshima

    27 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

This morning armed with a map a vague address and some even vaguer directions I set off to find a random place where on the 3rd floor I could fulfill my ambition to try calligraphy...I inevitably got lost...Google maps had me all over Japan. A young couple I asked sent me in another direction and eventually a very smart young man I asked walked with me to the right place, going out of his way although on his way to work...
I got in a random lift ,still not sure I was in the right place and all the instructions are in Japanese of course....turns out I was in the right place..room set up for samurai sword experience ,which I'd also have done if I'd known
I had a great time..tutor barely spoke English but got really excited if I'd apparently got it right...I'd no idea what I was doing but was fun
On the way bk I had breakfast in Starbucks then saw a lovely sign that is so poignant on a street corner
On the next corner were a bunch of .Indian ladies walking round in kimonos..was hilarious and I stopped to chat and they allowed a photo.....this is what travelling is all about
Back at the hotel I collected my things and spent some time sorting accommodation and a trip for 3rd to 5th April in Tokyo plus an airport hotel stay for 5th at osaka airport
Then was time to tackle the famous Japanese rail system
    My destination..hiroshima and miyajama..for the next 3days

Its really dreadful herr for lack of escalators ..no fun lifting my luggage..but my 2nd man of the day offered in passing to carry my bag down the stairs. Unlike in the uk there are loads of staff ...and I went into an office where 2 really young girls wearing wierd hats coats and masks told me I needed a ticket for the underground as my 5day pass didn't cover it....
I found the platform but no idea which direction so jumped on 1st train that came which turned out to be ok 😅...I noticed when I got off they have women only carriages
I arrived at the main station Shin -Osaka which was mental ! And massive and heaving ! A 3rd man helped with my bags.
Called in tourist information and sorted tickets for going to Tokyo and back to osaka airport .
Found the platform number 22 and witnessed the shinkasan bullet train glide in ..it was an impressive 16 carriages long and sleek ...large clear numbers on the outside...and..whn finding the platform you are sent up one escalator for carriages 1-8 and a different escalator for carriages 9-16.....no mad dash down piccadilly station here! As your ticket also tells you the carriages and the seat..
My train was also a bullet train.i have to say avanti West coast at home have nicer seats..the layout is 3 seats one side ,2 the other all facing forward..plenty of leg room...
Could I tell it was super fast ? ..some of the time yes but it was steady
Arrival at hiroshima involved putting the wrong pass in the machine and the barrier closed..but again there were helpful staff ..
A trip into the 7/11 shop dealt with food for tea.including pringles !
I got a taxi to the hotel which after the luxury room I'd just come from is shabby chic to say the least..but will do.. They offered the option to take anything i needed from a chest of drawers full of "amenities" ..soap ,moisturiser flannels...but no milk for my Yorkshire tea brew !!...yes I have brought my Yorkshire tea bags ...i intend to let Yorkshire tea know too ! Has been a challenging day but interesting experience. After the rigors of the train ,osaka and calligraphy seem a long time ago already..but as a lovely reminder following my review at the hotel ,Ken the concierge who organised the sky tower and calligraphy sent a lovely email with a photo of osaka castle as a gift

  • Hiroshima peace park 28/3/25

    28 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After an epic sleep I ventured across the road.to.the Hiroshima peace park.. I'd heard the name and that there was an atomic bomb but knew very little else
It's been very well done, is peaceful but poignant and the place I encountered the widest variety of nationalities
It was stark to see a model and read how the area was before the bomb 💣 😳 equally stark to see the rubble had been left where it landed in the atomic bomb dome building. The blossoms were out ..which is a main attraction at this time
A piano which a 19yr girl played survived and has been restored and used to play peaceful music .the girl died of radiation
There is a children's monument with a bell ..and is backed by the coloured strands people can add to whn they visit
The monument to those who died is cleverly done through an arch with water and a flame and focusing on the atomic bomb dome...it stretches expansively over the park
Other monuments include another peace bell and one with doves..
At lunch I went to a restaurant where they give a flannel for you to wipe hands before eating ..iv read its expected you use it but only for hands .it's also impolite apparently to leave food so I had to finish my pizza 🍕 😅.
In a trip to my lifeline 7/11 grocery shop i bought a kit kat...which is barely like the real deal...they have strawberry and mint ones but I got the original...chocolate seemed different tho
On the move again tomorrow to miyajama via train and ferry ⛴️

  • Miyajama island and complications 29/325

    29 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I was all set to tackle the mind boggling transport system this morning when, following breakfast at the same cafe as yesterday noted a day cruise going to Miyajama, my destination for today and tonight
They allowed me to take my case so that was great
Walking along the banks of the peace park I saw an incredibly tame Heron....
Arrived in miyajama, thinking I'd find hotel and then do the tourist thing....I was delighted to spot the tame deer in the streets as thought I'd miss this having been led to believe they were only in a place called Nara....
I then discovered that my accommodation wasn't on the island but on the mainland and I had to get the ferry.....Not a problem.
I spotted the rickshaw and it was absolutely fabulous!..no lugging my luggage and dodging the vast number of tourists, instead, riding high and the realisation that people were taking photos of me in it ...so funny..
That poor lad who declared me and my 12kg luggage to be Light ...pulled me round for an hour..he said it was "a piece of cake!"...just saying !
He asked me if I'd coloured my hair the colour it always is, ...for the cherry blossom season..I laughed and said no
There is no ambulance on the island . It.has to come by ferry

Apparently the Torri Gate is made of a unique wood and is 150yrs old
There is a cable car but didn't do that today
Time to get on the ferry to find my elusive accommodation
A taxi was also elusive and didn't seem to know where my accommodation was...he even stopped and asked others ....turns out to be in a residential area..a house....but no-one at home... noted unattended suitcases...I sat around for about 10mins and decided I would not stay at this place....so now no bed for the night....not worried bout this at all ..not the 1st time.
A guy came to nearby house and i asked for help to get a taxi but none to be had ...ultimately he ran me back to the ferry area..
Nearest hotel in the centre of miyajama ,no availability so I sat in their foyer and booked hotel back in hiroshima, the nearest one to the station, cos this was dragging on ..consequently rather expensive!
.Returning to Hiroshima i saw Nisha hiroshima station..so I got off ...but it turned out to be 3 stops too soon. 🤣. Eventually arrived at right station and hotel.all is well
Some quirks of Japanese culture are they provide slippers and nightwear..( pretty ugly sort../ hospital gown standard).lots of bowing for blooming everything, flannels to wipe hands before food but mustn't wipe face apparently; money is put on a small tray not handed directly between the customer and the buyer...cash card is a great overrider of this
I think you hv to pass things with 2 hands ..but not sure
Also noone seems to eat in public but I was starving

  • A transit and life admin day 30/3/25

    30 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

On.the move and battling with the challenge of the railway system...which despite having a pass for certain area requires you to get a seat ticket involving inevitable queues ,once you've found where the right ticket desk is .To be fair there are a lot of staff ..
Hugely reliant on GOOGLE TRANSLATE..try it for work purposes..its good and replaces the one I previously used
First though, some life admin. Applying for a Skipton building society ISA from a Japanese hotel reception felt odd , as did emailing Cardiff University 😳 .Also feeling removed from the clocks changing .
Once admin was out of the way, I set off via the life saving 7/11 shop to buy breakfast. Sandwiches here are fantastic, they cut all the crusts off ,rather posh ! I saw the ultimate afternoon tea sandwich of strawberries and cream ...why do we bother with anything else ..
Heading for Kyoto ,I reached Shin-Osaka station, which is like Piccadilly station on steroids sooooo many people!!!
Having realised tht my accommodation was no where near where I want to be tomorrow, for an experience of a lifetime, that I booked from the UK ..I diverted to a cafe and changed accommodation...to one recommended by the place I'm going tomorrow
Making sure of where you stay is relevant to where you want to do things, is tricky and combining it with a nearby station,so you don't get lost , adds another challenge ..but I'm coping so far
Iv arrived at station in Kyoto called GoJo!

Delighted with the change of hotel...its very posh ! ..and here for 3nights so no lugging luggage for a bit.

The hotel is posh but you cannot get milk here ,to go with my Yorkshire teabags ! Not good!!
They have all manner of free amenities..face cream, hair brush, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor etc but no milk..!
There's a fridge in the room il buy some from the 7/11 shop tomorrow.

More impressed today with the speed of the bullet train ,it certainly looks slick coming into the station and you can judge the seats (Niamh) 💺 😉 😀 as iv taken pics specially 😀 😄

Japanese quirks of the day , a high chair in the toilet cabin for your baby, whilst you use the facilities! Trains and stations play music before making an announcement ,often recognisable classical music .

This hotel has an Onsen ....which expects you to shower and go in in your birthday suit only !...I've yet to decide ..if it's my birthday or not !🤣....but there'll be no photos !🤣..you'll be relieved to know

  • Bucket list experience day 31/3/25

    31 de marzo de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

So its 1 week today , since I set off in style , Emirates Business class to start my trip.
Today I was relieved to discover, that the hotel I swapped to, last night ,was just 90metres in a straight line ,from the venue for my bucket list experience;-a long awaited ,booked from the UK, Geisha makeover..the works! , not just the kimono rental.
On arrival I had to remove my scarpa boots ,wear geisha type flip flops, which were really uncomfortable and hard to walk in ,go round the corner wearing them ,inside the building and upstairs. Undress and be dressed in a cotton underskirt that flattens the girls (boobs)and don a kimono dressing gown. Time for makeover make up...
1st an Ena Sharples hair net ,then masking tape, like micropore round the edges.
Then the make up...the white foundation is really cold ..

I'm not good with anything near my eyes so eye make up.was a challenge for me and not allowed to wear my glasses !

I Can't tell you how many layers of tight undergarments are under tht kimono.! Loads ! And all tightly fitting.
I was able to choose the kimono..
    I love it..think it's beautiful.
On closer inspection this evening Ive realised it has cherry blossom design ...and it is cherry blossoms season here at the moment.
There are several bands round the middle which literally go over your boobs and down to to your groin it's veryrigid ..

Nevertheless, I had to go downstairs ,outside, put back on the wierd flip flops and.....get in a taxi!🤣... no idea where we we going .
I sort of fell backwards into the taxi as you can't bend !

The lady with me had to help .it was not a pretty sight ....funny though !

I wasn't allowed to lean back in the taxi ,which is specially for geisha! ...I had to hold a handle at the top of the front seat ..no seat belt for me ...
The 3 people in the taxi chatted on in Japanese..Id no idea what they were saying

Iwondered as we were crawling in traffic what people passing might think..if they could see me inside the taxi
..but actually when I got out of the taxi( easier than getting in !) someone bowed to me..🤣😲

We arrived at the photo studios.. I have had professional photos taken which will be emailed in a week apparently..
I had to wear the proper wooden clogs which were actually easier than the flip flops to walk in ..

It was also easier and more comfortable in the outfit and taxi on the way back as had got used to wearing it all and felt more relaxed.

It's fair to say I didn't recognise myself once it was all complete and Math woke up to photos of me in the outfits...and didn't recognise me either!

It was one of the best experiences I've ever had and I've done quite a few !

Stems from.reading Memoirs of a Geisha years ago .
.I'd no idea that the girls have so many layers and so much precision in their make-up and everything they do every day ...5days a week...I couldn't do it !
It was a 3.5hrs experience but some of that was travelling.
I was Really sad to see it all come off and have to put my ordinary clothes on .literally the lady wiped the white foundation off and there I was underneath it all
Maybe Mft should adopt as new uniform, so staff would feel special and pts wouldn't recognise us off duty .🤣...but you'd never manage compression bandaging as can't move in it !🤦‍♀️

The hotel staff knew I was doing it and were amazed at the photos, especially as its so close to the hotel..not sure they realised previously that this experience is so close to the hotel
It was very special and I'm so glad I've done it.

I've found some milk that finally tastes like UK milk so finally had a brew, that tastes vaguely like home..the Japanese look at you in a funny way for wanting milk.

.A walk round inside any of the shops is an eye opener. I've realised how susceptible I am to what the packaging is like. Kit kat is huge here with strawberry and mint flavours !

Makeover complete,I went to Fushimi Inari Shrine in a taxi ..because I needed respite from the train system after yesterday...and doing battle again on 3rd April going to Tokyo.

I Saw the shrines and Torri Gates but was the place was heaving....so didn't stay long ,but have ticked the box
I look very very ordinary in photos there, after this morning, but can't be helped.
Probably best day so far apart from flying Emirates business class.

  • Tourist spots day .1stApril2025

    1 de abril de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Opting to take the easy way.tho not the cheapest way ...I took a taxi to the top tourist spot of the Bamboo Forest.there myself and too many others! wandered, through the trees .
I photographed a cemetery in the Bamboo Forest.there as it was so different to ours ...all neat uniform stones.
Bailing on public transport again I then went on to the Golden temple which was impressive and also heaving . I lit a candle and tried to.ring the bell at the temple, ringing it was hard work.and you seem.to have to throw coins in a box as well to do it.
The journey in the taxi, meant I did see parts.of the country I'd not have otherwise seen tho.
Japanese quirks of the day.include an apparent aversion on behalf of the Japanese to my touching anything..of theirs .eg don't touch the car door to open ,it's automatic..I wasn't to touch the kimono yesterday...etc ..they really do panic..
This evening I had a massage and went to pick up.the towel I'd been lying on ,to help the lady tidy-up , but suddenly, I wasn't to touch it , it seems 😅 ...I don't get it 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️
Taxi drivers tend to wear uniform inc caps and white gloves
Money is put in a tray, wherever you are inc in the taxi...
You seem to pass things and receive things with 2hands. Plus the inevitable bowing
And heaven help you if you step into the road to cross before the green man light comes on ..I might have been told about this by a certain traffic managing person....oops! 😅
They definitely seem.to have a thing about strawberries. I tried a pretty looking rice cake..i thought it tasted wierd ...it looks soft but it was kinda chewy..Having decided i didn't like it , i couldn't find a bin.it seems rubbish is taken by the person who provided the item..indeed.when I took the remnants of chicken on a stick back to the shop ,she was totally happy to take my "trash "as they call it ..however I was in the taxi and could neither take it back to the shop or put it on the taxi money tray..so had to hang onto it ...a squishy thing with apple sauce in the middle..did ultimately find a trash can 😅.
There are random vending machines all over the place, even where there are shops! Selling drinks and snacks

  • The most Japanese day so far.2/4/25

    2 de abril de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Another bucket list experience was to wear the kimono and walk about with the parasol..get your guide app offered this plus a walking tour of Gion , the area where the maiko and geisha are based
I took a trip into the unknown in a taxi, who turfed me out at the corner of a street saying the place I needed was on the 2nd floor of the building on the corner! Thankfully he was right.
I went through the rigors of all the under garments and the tight fastening, remembering to puff up my chest so that hopefully when it was done I could breathe! It may look fabulous but underneath is also a work of art
People can get jobs as kimono dressing assistants..the shop was really busy.
I then got the dream...walking to the meeting point of the tour with the parasol open. It was fabulous .loved it .though I'd had to insist to the very strict Japanese ladies that I would not be wearing the shoes..as I couldn't do a 3hr walking tour in them.
Whilst waiting at the meeting point ,a guy told me I looked beautiful, 2 ladies wanted photos with me and the man and the ladies were all swapping phones and photos .it waz v funny..I should hv stayed and charged .I'd hv made fortune.
The tour was great and culminated with meeting a Geisha and a maiko..plus photo with the maiko...The maiko is 17yrs old , lives in a boarding house for her 5yrs training, has school 9-1 preparations for work ,so putting on make up and kimono 2-5 ,work 6-10,wait up for senior geisha to return to the boarding house at midnight, go to bed about 2am and has to rest head/ neck on special block to keep hair nice.Maiko hairstyle is with own hair .they are not allowed mobiles or to go to places like Macdonalds..they must acquire the old fashioned/ traditional lifestyle. They learn dancing and music and doing tea ceremonies amongst other things and can apparently work all over the world If booked/ required ..Fascinating
Lots of boxes ticked in this tour.
Tonight I am staying in a ryokan,a traditional Japanese guest house
I was particularly worried bout finding this as the streets are more packed with buildings than hulme on steroids...don't ever be a Dn here!
Taxi saved the day and the place is beautiful...another bucket list...but let's see if i need the hoist in the morning when 🤣🤦‍♀️
On arrival i had to take shoes off at the door ,they wanted to put them in some shoe locker but as they are my only shoes and needed for the jungle, I asked to put them in a bag...the owner cleaned the wheels on my case

  • Kyoto to Tokyo

    3 de abril de 2025, Japón ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Having had an amazing sleep on the futon , the owner arrived to clear my bed away at 8.15.am..no lie in here. She then cleaned the table I was looking forward to the pre ordered western breakfast which was agreed last night. Somehow, the lovely lady owner turned up with Japanese breakfast..fish and wierd things in small dishes and dark soup in a brown bowl....I never eat soup something that looked like cream cheese in hot water ,..a piece of orange (phew) rice and tea...but not Yorkshire!
Dilemma....didn't fancy it but didn't want to offend the owner and leaving food is rude...
I managed the knackered looking salmon and rice , the tea went down the sink and the brown bowl with dark soup was a great help in receiving various things ,which i then put the lid on. This left the cream cheese thing which was tasteless and the pate thing , which found their way into a freezer bag from home and ultimately into a bin on Kyoto station.
Going in a out of houses is a big drama...undo shoes..take one off but make sure ,if Going in , that foot is on the inside, kick off other shoe ,then can fully step inside and the same ,but in reverse when going out.
Travelled to Tokyo today, solely for the purpose of a day tour that starts in Tokyo tomorrow, IF I can find the right starting point!! Hotel booked last minute and seems to be in the right area.
    🤞🤞.
As the breakfast was over and I'd no further intentions in kyoto for this time in Japan, I went to the train station. I've learnt, if you want to change train journey times, it is possible and easy ,if prepared to queue ..the staff generally have quite good English and there are sometimes counters for foreign tourists...but ,when I didn't understand and the member of staff used Google translate, and showed me on the iPad....across a counter..i went to touch it to alter the angle of the iPad, to read the screen more easily, only to be told " don't touch " i find this attitude happens a lot ..i don't really understand it at all !
Anyway, train times changed and upgraded to 1st class/ green carriage, which has recliner seats and footrest.plus they bring wrapped flannels to wipe hands and also snacks ...on a hand held tray , not like a British rail trolley. The conductor bows before coming in the carriages.Arriving at Tokyo station 🚉 was not as mental as I'd expected tho waited 40mins for a taxi ,which passed all too fast given my chat with a rather nice Canadian guy.
Iv attempted to use the in house guest washing machines this evening but in use every time I went, so I will try again tomorrow.

  • An epic day tour to Mount Fuji

    4 de abril de 2025, Japón ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

The whole purpose of coming to Tokyo, was solely to go on a bus tour to Mount Fuji and the Chureito Pagoda.
.There is a photo of Mount Fuji with the Pagoda and the cherry blossom. I wanted that picture!! So a day's travel yesterday from kyoto to Tokyo...an anxious mega early 7am start to find the meeting point...which hadn't been clearly described! and tomorrow a day's journey back to Osaka to the airport! ..
A taxi helped me get to the right place, but there were loads of people waiting for trips so finding the right guide was an issue.
In trying to find the guide I became adopted by an Indian family from Bombay who also sat with me and took photos for me. They were lovely !
My 1st sight of Mount Fuji caused me to say" Wow" so loudly I woke up the Indian man sitting next to me.
It is absolutely amazing.! We were v lucky with the weather today, as yesterday was raining.
We were able to stop for photos and I actually had a half decent brew !
We eventually arrived at the area where the Pagoda is..but were expected to do the 20mins walk there and 20mins back leaving only 20mins to climb 397steps ,get the photo we all wanted , for which there was a huge queue and back to the bus or risk being left behind ! It.was unreasonable.
I decided I had come specially for this moment and that I'd leave the tour at this point take my time .
While waiting to do the much needed photo, clouds came down over Mount Fuji! Gutted .
The couple behind me said all the buses for getting back to Tokyo had sold out ...oops didn't think of that one 🤔😅
I knew there was a train station so went straight there in the company of a girl from Lebanon who.lives in Dubai and a guy from Turkey.
Getting back to Tokyo involved 2 train changes and a period of time sitting on the train floor as I was knackered and no idea how far we were going 😅 .
Arriving back at Shinjuku station in Tokyo, I went in the a cafe where i had tea which they put in hot milk !! plus some fruits which were rock hard ,seemingly covered in ??? Sugar.
Then I went in the supermarket and risked a potato and beef croquet and some beef ...all ok ...just hope it stays that way !

Tokyo appears to be lots of gigantic high rise buildings but the effort in coming to go on the outing today has been worthwhile.
In the lift at the hotel I was.chatting with a guy from Barcelona now living in Indonesia and a lady from Stockport! ..now living in Turkey, her partner was from Turkey.
Lots of Australians here ,who I tell i will wave to when fly over them on the way to new Zealand...( flight booked to Christchurch this evening for 24th May, plus flight to Vancouver for mid June)..yet to book UK return flight ✈️ 😀 .
Lots of Americans here to whom I say I was going to come to the USA inc Alaska but changed my mind thanks to Donald Trumps latest border controls ...iv not experienced much support for him.in those i have spoken to .
It seems even within families there are divided opinions . A guy on the train yesterday from Winconsin ,says that is a very "red area" and he daren't say anything, even to his dad ,who is a Donald fan
The conversations with people from all over the world are what makes travelling fun and interesting...learning similarities and comparing differences.
The Indian gentleman wassaying there's no way his daughter could/ would have a pre University gap year...which compared to Math having at 18yrs old ..He was saying she wouldn't earn much money and even when I said neither had Matthew, it just isn't a thing in India, until she's done Masters level..(poor thing ) ...the daughter was lovely and didn't know what she wants to do but likes languages and is considering learning Japanese

  • Last day in Japan..robots and airport

    5 de abril de 2025, Japón ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

My last day in Japan started with a taxi ride across Tokyo which confirmed it's a city that is pristine and filled with gigantic high rise buildings..bigger than anything in the uk I'd say
I went to the restaurant on the 25th floor of my hotel and got some amazing views
A final hurrah was at a robot cafe ..it was a brilliant experience
The robots are not Ai controlled but a project that gives disabled people a job and inclusivity by working the robots remotely .I appear to be speaking to the robot but actually it was the girl behind the robot who has a degenerative spinal condition
Afterwards as I was far too early for my train I sat outside the station as was sunny and chatted 1st with a German family and then a Japanese young man. Both were interesting.
I succumbed to a Macdonalds and whilst not remotely homesick thought ..ah maccyD's the tastes of home
Time to battle with the trains ...including one change at shin osaka..overall better today as its Saturday so not the frenetic weekday rushing
Arriving at osaka airport from Tokyo by train took 5hrs..I'd not intended to go to Tokyo originally so flight booked from osaka
I booked a hotel at the airport attached to the terminal..for ease in the morning and paid zero attention to the type of room
On arrival apparently it's a premier room complimentary mini bar ( no alcohol!!) Was offered newspaper and when I walked in its a full blown suite
Bath has gold taps and there is a massage chair ....but they dint have milk for a brew !!@
I sat in the massage chair switched it on and ate my final Japanese sandwich from the family mart shop.
Japan has given me some great experiences and there's still things I'd like to do here...but it's not won my heart
Tomorrow..Cambodia..let's see how that goes .

  • Bye Japan, Hello Cambodia

    6 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

On reflection this morning I remembered that osaka airport is on an island that is sinking...but hopefully not before I leave .the room last night was immense, such a shame only 10hrs in it .
6am start to rejig bags as was very keen to keep my bag with me... 10kg in wheelie case...meant I got.to keep it with me.
Anxiety about the airline losing my bag, at this early stage in my trip ,did result in buying an upgrade ticket...and it paid off plus, I was able to sleep and reduce jet lag
The plane was late setting off at Vietnam...on the 2nd part of my journey. Spent time talking to 2 aussie ladies
    Finally arrived and had food
The place is a community project and it's beautiful
Cambodia is.2hrs behind Japan and 6hrs ahead of the UK...so its been a long .one
Transfer taxi sorted , and food
    Time for bed

  • I Love Cambodia 🇰🇭 ❤️

    7 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

Cambodia has won my heart already...its a mix of the madness of Morroco and Bangkok both of which i love..I guess thereby it also felt familiar
Amidst the chaos here with the traffic and tuk tuks and motorbikes, my accommodation which is a community project, is absolutely beautiful and an oasis of calm....they can make tea !! With cold milk!🥳. They all speak really good English and can't do enough to help. My room.is amazing.
Unlike in Japan ,if I want to go somewhere for an experience or sightseeing I am collected from the hotel...in Japan I had to find the meeting point and would be left behind if late.

This morning I tried a Pottery class using a wheel for 1st time ..I was utterly useless..but bucket list ticked. The teacher was deaf and dumb....but we coped....and its yet another way other countries are striving for inclusivity ..the UK could definitely do better on this having seen 2 great examples this week, in Japan and here
I had a visiting school group watching me!🤪
I ended up covered in the clay and I sensed the tutor despaired of me !🤣..I certainly wasted a lot of clay !
This evening I've been to a Cambodian dance show with dinner...and yes I did eat and enjoy most of the food.
It is expected that you remove shoes and leave outside the venue and we sat on the floor to eat ....I did think I'd have to sit crossed legs but discovered could sit normally.
Transport is by tuk tuk which I love.
It's generally 35degrees here but ..my room is belting out 16 degrees on the air con!🥳🥳
Looking forward to an overnight experience tomorrow 😀

  • Markets and massage ..plans changed

    8 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

An early 6.30am.start in preparation for a stay at an elephant sanctuary,.I'd been emailing from the UK. They were due to collect me at 8 but by 9am.no sign and the realisation I'd no phone number..so I emailed them..It was obvious I wouldn't be going today. Hotel staff have organised a different place for tomorrow. So all is not lost
I decided to go into town and look on the market. The tuk tuk rides are seriously good fun. I asked to be taken to a stall for clothes
The market was very difficult as its low tourist season apparently and they all have tons of stock and are very insistent that I bought stuff . One said i had loads of money and when I said how do you know she tapped side of her nose as in ...either ....I just do...or...I can smell the money. She decided that as I'd managed to get to Cambodia I must have money
I left the market and went in search of a drink ...unintentionally having a pina colada as I couldn't get the girl to understand..no alcohol ...At midday in the heat I began to feel the effect! And left half of it !
Mooching on i spotted a spa and went in ...I ended up have an hour massage, an hour foot massage and an hour facial..for 30quid ...as they currently have a half price deal on ..I was given a drink of water on arrival and after the massage , drink of water and piece of mango
There's lots of bowing goes on here too with the addition of "praying " 🙏 hands!🤦‍♀️
Iv been to the top floor of the accommodation where there's an awesome pool. It was mega hot there tho There is also a more shaded pool on the ground floor
Food at the accommodation is proving to be good and cheap. I also have a favorite drink of pineapple and lime...very refreshing..
So overall not a bad day in the end
Managed to do things that were on the list but wasn't sure how I'd fit them in as only here till the 12th April.

  • Elephants &Circus. Best Cambodia day

    9 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Undoubtedly my best day in Cambodia 🇰🇭 !
Cambodia was not in the original plan, until I saw the chance to visit an elephant sanctuary and walk with them. I am so glad I came.
The disappointment of not going to an elephant sanctuary yesterday was soon forgotten , once I arrived at the alternative sanctuary ,arranged by the fabulous staff at my accommodation
I had an interesting conversation with the driver who grew up in the paddy fields area , he asked his mum, if he could go to school and was told no...he is one of 9 .he remembers the rice being ruined and not having food.
He has learnt his very good English from tourists
When I asked about health care ,he said its ok for rich people and the doctors expect payment for information. He hasn't got the money and the doctors made him wait 2days for his health information. He had a motorbike accident and would have faced amputation but for a French surgeon.
Education is free or private. The driver says state education isn't enough, morning only but if you can pay ,you can go to extra lessons
There is obvious poverty. The driver works in the region of 12 to 15hrs a day , as do others from what I'm seeing with the staff at the accommodation, particularly the tuk tuk drivers. The driver earns 8 dollars a day (£6.27) for his contract with the company I went with. He has to live away from home and rent a room ,because its too far to commute on top of his working hours ...an interesting but sobering chat..
He.wasnt whinging just answered my questions and volunteered some of the information. He was lovely
The driving here is fairly sane and sensible compared to some countries and its overall cleaner than I'd anticipated.
The standard of English outstrips the Japanese! by miles..funny one that ,as I'd naively have thought it would be more of an issue here than in Japan. Not had to use Google translate once here
They ,like Morroco and Bangkok carry anything and everything on scooters , tonight I saw a lady getting the dog! To sit in.front of her on the scooter. The dog looked neither comfortable or safe
The driver remembers him and siblings being on a push bike with his mum
The elephant sanctuary experience was incredible..to be able to feed them and walk with them even tho 3km in 30degrees heat and ultimately touch and observe them was fantastic. These elephants are rescued from the tourist industry where they were used for rides, including up a steep local hill.
The elephants had right of way on our walk and we had to stand back ....not least as sand or water spray by the elephants would come our way if got too close..
This evening I have been what the staff here call a circus ,It was an incredible show, without words but an artist painted the story throughout the one hour show ..the performers were talented acrobats ...but they told the story of the genocide here and the impact and flashbacks people had ...and how art and music and acting are helping people to overcome the trauma of that time...it was like nothing Iv ever experienced, no words spoken but so well done was hugely moving and made me cry ..I'd no idea what to expect but it wasn't that ...it was phenomenonal. I was able to hv a photo with the performers and told them how good it was.
Today I have spoken with people from Tahiti and Taiwan ..Cambodia seems to attract a wider tourist population than your standard yanks and aussies ! Also Brits here from Brighton and London. One of whom thought i had a Manchester accent ...which I took issue with ,until he said i sound like someone from Hale ,where he'd worked for few years ...let him off at that point
There's so many pics from today! I had great experiences in Japan, but I prefer the Cambodia vibe .

  • Sobering experience &Pub St.Siem Reap

    10 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

    WARNING ..photos have distressing details
Avisit to the killing fields literally 10mins from my accommodation, with a Nicaraguan lady ,now living in Washington, was a stark and sobering experience this morning. The guides ,my age remember it clearly and I wish I'd had one ..but overhead bits from other people's.
The level of torture and inhumanity defies logic. I heard a guide explaining how his dad had been killed
The artwork is graphic and stark
The memorial has the skulls and bones of people who were killed, visible on 4 sides of the memorial ..800 bodies found and apparently this is a small memorial area ...as a race we don't learn .if only people could just be kind
This afternoon I did holiday admin and had a power nap
Id heard about Pub Street so decided to have a tuk tuk ride into town to investigate
Its the Cambodia equivalent to the Curry mile...but cleaner ! Great vibe ..where i may have had a design on my leg ...but is it a tattoo...or is it henna?🤔 Its prime leg ulcer location.and Im .regretting the colour ,as looks like gaping wound !🤣

  • Last day in Cambodia😪

    11 de abril de 2025, Camboya ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

I am genuinely sorry to be leaving Cambodia. It has suprised me on many levels .the people are absolutely delightful and the staff at the hotel are so helpful. It's also been an absolute bargain ,for virtually full board, as I've not eaten out
This morning a , killer early start of 4am ..to see the sun rise at Angkor Wat..Its a real thing to do here and as such busy,so.it was exciting that my tuk tuk driver was doing his best to get past all the others
Angkor Wat is vast ...apparently a 1.5km.walk around .Arriving in the dark ,and not knowing where to go but following the crowds
Initially sat on a wall with a lake in front of me and a vague outline, I saw daylight happening..Moving on I entered the main area which is vast and could see the towers associated with photos of Angkor Wat.. The sun hadn't emerged but it was daylight, so l presumed that was the end of things for today, an unspectacular sunrise....but, at that exact moment the sun literally came up from behind a cloud and continued to rise ,it was fabulous to watch
I spent some time wandering round, I climbed to the top of the tower as well
Preparations are in progress all over the area for the New year ,on Sunday, where apparently one tradition is to fire water cannons at each other .Angkor wat was being prepared with decorations
Although my tour guide hadn't turned up, I was glad to be able to come away by 8.30 and return for breakfast .Many who go are on 8hr bus tour....such as the delightful Sri Lankan lady I met this evening.
I spent the afternoon doing admin for my trip , booking hotels for Singapore and part of New Zealand, though as yet not clear how I get back from.Queenstown to Auckland in time for my plane to Canada. Noone in Canada answers emails ! Which is frustrating when trying to plan things
After dinner I realised it may be a long time before I ride in a tuk tuk again, so asked the driver to take me for a spin 😅
It was on my return I encountered and chatted with the lady from. Sri Lanka
A 4am start again in the morning will see me say goodbye to Cambodia and onwards to Sri Lanka ..for 3weeks...2 on a tour and one at the turtle project..

  • Visa drama..Hello Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

    12 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

    Today started well...up at 4am.
Taxi at 5am.arrive airport 6am.where I was literally the 1st person there
Check in time and the grumpy woman behind the check in barked at me for my visa for sri lanka...meltdown moment..as despite an afternoon of holiday admin yesterday, id not done the visa for today. I applied online at the check in ,received an automatic acknowledgement but that's not what was needed
My options were to wait and see if visa arrived so could be checked through to sri lanka or
Fly to Bangkok, which was 1st part of my flight anyway and try to sort in Bangkok....which is what I chose to do...as siem Reap is small airport and accommodation an hour away. Worst case scenario Bangkok would have on site hotels
Another email came saying my application was accepted but the Bangkok airline staff convinced it wasn't enough to gain access to sri lanka
The grumpy check in person wanted my carry on suitcase to be checked in baggage...which would have meant that on arrival in Bangkok airport which is beyond massive..its insane. I'd hv to go through immigration collect bags and re - check in .Truthfully there was not going to be enough time . Another manager waded into the situation and this resulted in my keeping my bag with me ,which also meant i could stay airside.
After a long walk through Bangkok airport and a discussion with sri lanka airline staff that confirmed, the electronic acceptance is ok..I secured my boarding pass
    Never been so relieved
The stress of the day has eased on arrival at the hotel which is incredible. It's where the tour group starts tomorrow
First impression is that it's just like Cambodia
They drive on the left like the UK
and apparently the area I'm in has lotsx of catholics

  • Negombo shopping & meet the tour group

    13 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌩️ 29 °C

Sri lanka is already serving up suprises ....they drive on the left , tho the driving is appalling!..no rules are adhered to, they use the same plugs as we do ,the trains and buses are held together by little more than good will...and are alarming!.they have Tesco express and Sainsbury's local !
Negombo is a significant Catholic area , I even saw a Nun this morning.
The streets of Cambodia are similar in the shabby chic appearance of Sri Lanka

I needed a few things this morning so reception arranged for a driver to take me to specific places to get them.. He waited with me for safety and so didn't get lost, plus he knew exactly where to go.. I'd no idea !
On my return, I over heard a guy saying he's from Christchurch, ended up chatting with him and playing a game with him and his 4yr old daughter
Too hot to go out on the beach so retreated to my room
This evening I met the group il.be touring with ..a new Zealand nurse and husband...she doesn't wear a ring and they are in separate rooms ...seemed horrified when suggested they could have a double if they wanted ..
A tattooed lady, who likes to share room on tours as apparently you'll share your drugs too..her words ...nice ,loud but gets up 6am ..had orangutans tattoo
A woman who is married, just retired and doing something out of her comfort zone for 1st time
Some aussies ..yet to meet the others
After doing my own thing in past three weeks, I'm not relishing the all on the bus ...now, all off the bus and having to listen to all the guide says elements of this ,cos iv gone places , for 5hrs or 5mins, as I felt I wanted...but is means to an end ...there's going to be too many temples !

  • In search of a leopard 🐆 😳

    14 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The organised tour started this morning with a trip to the Catholic church I'd been in yesterday and a visit to the fish market...I stayed on the bus and booked my horse riding in the rockies in Canada instead.
Those who went came back stinking of fish.

Called to try local palm 🌴 wine
And saw the guy climbing and going between the trees.

Onwards to an old colonial house for tea then a traditional home for lunch ...its a lean to kind of place with a tree growing up through the centre.
Onwards again to a wildlife park area ...where we were supposed to see leopard in the wild..instead saw only deer and peacocks
Not impressed..might as well hv been Dunham.massey
The ride in the jeep was bone shaking and whiplash inducing thanks to the pot holes ...for 3hrs !
Finally to the hotel which is of a poor standard!..one room had to call the manager as the shower flooded the room
The group are nice enough and seem to get on ...all around my age.....we shall see
Given the mileage we are covering., --- the tour is the right decision, but I'm rather underwhelmed so far.

  • Temples and more Temples

    15 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

We set off this morning to see 2 Buddhist temples ....the catch....they are at the top of several hundred steps.. you are expected to walk round in just socks and no sun hat... The no shoes thing is respect..same with hat...but its 32degrees from early morning here..wholly convinced I'd have burnt feet and I returned to the bus ,let's say, in a timely manner!.. having seen all i wanted to see
The Macau monkeys are a pest for pinching stuff from the tourists and at the car park there was a sign saying beware of the crocodiles 🐊 😳
It's a new year celebration here at the moment for the Buddhists so the temples are busy.A tradition for today is to wear white
This afternoon was more temples....I bailed, as did some other people and I did planning admin for my trip...including my route and mode of transport across Canada 🇨🇦 😅..which i think i have now worked out
This evening we were taken to a restaurant and actually it was a pleasant time and I managed some of the food . The group are nice enough and like minded. Sharing travel stories has certainly helped with my New Zealand and Canadian parts of this trip...resulting in changes of itinerary and modes of transport..from train across the rockies to bus and flight .plus flight to Auckland from Queenstown, instead of bus and boat
At the hotel, the beds creak , the electric sparks and lights flicker
The kettle switches itself on and dry boils and the shower has flooded 2 rooms .Also, there are lizards climbing the walls in some rooms...we move on tomorrow...to what ?🤔..I don't know ..But is another hotel ....AND ...more.temples !😩

  • A better day overall

    16 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Iv been struggling with group touring ,even tho I realise it's helping me get round the sites
Nice enough group of like minded people and sharing travel stories has certainly helped with my plans
Today we finally visited somewhere that was on my sri lanka list...the dambulla caves
I don't appreciate walking on hot ground with only socks and not able to wear a hat!...apparently out of respect
We then had lunch in a mud hut place and climbed into a tree house
En route ,we saw wild elephant 🐘 at the roadside. We have been told not to go out of the hotel because of the elephants
Tonight we had a tropical thunderstorm which i managed to video..despite being worried..it was actually a spectacular light show illuminating the lake

  • A spa like no other !

    17 de abril de 2025, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

This morning there was an option to have a massage at the hotel or go to yet more temples!🤪.. so I opted for the spa
Given.that the hotel was reasonable standard i went to the spa for massage and facial
All was not as it appeared..it was basically a shack with wire mesh in the window space and shower curtains separating the.two rock hard treatment beds ...there was an expectation to have a steam bath in a wooden chest of drawers type thing that when the lid was lifted looked like a coffin .I refused to get in ..but the person I was with ,did get in and was left to cook for about 20mins ! ...half expected her to be served up with rice!
After the massage I had a facial .God knows what she put on my face that had to stay on.for 20mins ....but i bailed and said i had to get the tour bus which was true a
Was not a good experience! A very unexpectedly primitive spa
Transferred to next hotel via a cafe and I got ice cream from the tuk tuk ice cream man .On arrival discovered they too had a spa but didn't bother
Some of the Group went to an elephant sanctuary but I decided to chill in my room.
This evening we have been out for dinner to a traditional restaurant owned by our guide's friend ..I actually quite liked some of the food.
I have a frog 🐸 in my room which hopped across earlier hopefully don't encounter it in the night!
