Morning Boat Ride on the Sea of Galilee - Jesus is said to have walked on the water (John 6:19-21), calmed a storm (Matthew 8:23-26) and showed the disciples miraculous catches of fish (Luke 5:1-8; John 21:1-6).

    700 ft below sea level

    12mi x 7 mi -- 150ft deep, freshwater (lake, not a sea)

waves get up to 10' due to mountains on either side affecting wind

North is Mt Beatitudes, Capernaum, Bethsaida, etc

    West is Tiberias and Nazareth

East is greek/pagan - where pigs went into demons

Most of Jesus' ministry to north & west of here

Jesus came to lake for peace, quiet, rest, & prayer

The words were shocking as Jesus gave us a better way to live

  • Capernaum

    23. toukokuuta 2023, Israel ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Capernaum - Jesus was born in Bethlehem, brought up in Nazareth, and preached in Jerusalem but it was the significant Galilean Ministry years which he spent in Capernaum and where he performed many of his miracles. Capernaum became his home and the Bible calls it Jesus' “own city”.

Trade route to Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc.

Countless miracles were performed here - the 2nd most only to Jerusalem

    Jesus ministry triangle - Jerusalem/Capernaum/Bethsaida

    roman mile markers are here

Peter's house is here - likely fished outside it on the Sea of Gaililee. Octagon shaped (supposedly b/c of 8 beatitudes) and has been built upon many times; Jesus spent considerable time here; man on mat was lowered through roof here

Jesus said to "Feed my Sheep" here

Synagogue - means a place to sit and share; in ancient times rabbi's taught in synagogues and often referenced what other rabbi's said, but Jesus never did that - He spoke with authority and owned what He said

Damascus is NE of here - where Paul had his revelation

70% of Gospels happened in northern end of Sea of Gaililee

Jeff said, "Adventure doesn't happen until you say yes."

  • Mt Arbel

    23. toukokuuta 2023, Israel ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Mount Arbel (Optional Hike) - Mount Arbel is one of those places never mentioned in the Bible. Its presence was so obvious, it was assumed. Certainly, anyone traveling around the Sea of Galilee or along the International Highway would have used Arbel as a landmark, identifiable from most any spot on the lake.

the valley next to Arbel is how Jesus traveled to Nazareth

Romans lowered themselves down this cliff via rope and used spears to stab Jews staying in the cliff-side caves

  • Caesarea Philippi

    24. toukokuuta 2023, Syyria ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Golan Heights Tour - the Bible, Golan is mentioned as a city of refuge located in Bashan: Deuteronomy 4:43, Joshua 20:8, 1 Chronicles 6:71. 19th-century authors interpreted the word Golan (Hebrew: גולן) as meaning "something surrounded, hence a district".

    • Caesarea Philippi - One of the villages around Caesarea Philippi was the setting for Jesus’ famous statement to Peter, “On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). This passage contains the very first use of the word church in the New Testament

    fig and almond trees

source of jordan river (1 of 3 sources); this makes up 25% of Jordan that feeds Sea of Gaililee and then Dead Sea (but it's dammed up so it doesn't really feed Dead Sea - keeps farmers crops fertile near Gaililee region)

Caves here were for goat and child sacrifice

    borders Lebanon

When people wanted to honor Caesar, they named something Caeserea (sesserea) - this was after Herod's son Phillip

Panyas - named after the greek god Pan; god of sexuality

Arabs called it Banyes (not Pan)

Bottomless pit here is where water came from, so it was referred to as the gates ofhell

this is farthest north that Jesus brought disciples

Matt 16 - who do you say I am (to Peter); on this rock I will build my Church; first mention fo the word church in the Bible

Reference that they would not be overcome by the gates of hell - which was here

This is horrible place - Jesus brought disciples here to see the shock and horror of the world

This was 1st substantial of Jesus saying He was the Messiah; Jesus then predicted His death and Peteer rejected it

Deny yourself and take up their cross; gain whole world and lose soul

Tel Dan - Tel Dan Stele is a fragmentary stele containing a Canaanite inscription which dates to the 9th century BCE. It is notable for possibly being the most significant and perhaps the only extra-biblical archeological reference to the house of David.

Banyas waterfall (separate stop just to see waterfalls) - Source of the Jordan river (50%) - hence the name "of the dan ... of jor dan".

Solomon's son jehobam was told to be nicer but turned mean - he made temples in Dan & Bethel and told people they didn't need to go to Jerusalem to worship

There's a temple built here in defiance of God

Lebanon/Jordan/Israel - violent border until 1994; still somewhat violent

    DMZ w Lebanon and Syria

    Israeli bunkers here too
