Affeneskalation im Uluwatu Tempel

🇩🇪 Als letzter Halt war noch der Uluwatu Tempel eingeplant und sollte das Highlight des Trips werden. Am Tempel war ich auch schon mal, jedoch haben wir uns an dem Tag für eine Feuervorführung angemeldet, in der eine balinesische Sage aufgeführt wird. Bevor die Vorführung los ging, hatten wir noch etwas Zeit und wollten die Klippen des Tempels etwas lang gehen. Eine Besonderheit an dem Tempel ist, dass auch hier viele Affen sind und im Gegensatz zum Monkey Forest, wo die Affen ihr eigenes Treiben verfolgen, sind diese Affen frecher und auch aggressiver. Hier versuchen die Affen den Menschen Sachen zu stehlen, um diese dann gegen Essen zurück zu tauschen.

Auf einem der Wege saß ein weiblicher Affe mit einem sehr kleinen Jungtier. Touristen sind davor stehen geblieben, um Fotos davon zu machen. Die Südafrikareise hat mir sehr geholfen ein besseres Verständnis für Tierverhalten zu bekommen. Ein paar der Touristen wollten weitergehen und entschieden sich den Weg hinter dem Affen und das Jungtier langzugehen. Ab dem Moment war der Fluchtweg für diese Abgeschnitten und das Jungtier presste sich näher an die Mutter. Aus der ferne sah ich einen männlichen Affen anlaufen der sich anscheinend auf mich fixiert hatte, denn sobald er die Gruppe erreicht hatte, machte er einen großen Satz und sprang mich von der Seite mit etwas Geschwindigkeit an.

Da stand ich dann mit einem fauchenden Affen an mir klebend mit großen Zähnen. Ich bin nicht in Panik ausgebrochen, sondern sehr ruhig geblieben, da es meiner Erwartung nach ein Zeichen von Schwäche wäre. Eigentlich soll man einem Affen nicht lange in die Augen schauen, weil es eine Provokation ist. Da der Affe aber schon an mir hing war dieser Schritt schon überwunden. Die Leute um mich herum sind weggeschreckt und haben schleunig Abstand gesucht. Ich fing an langsam loszugehen, um mich von dem anderen Affen und dem Jungtier zu entfernen und fing an dem Affen in die Augen zu starren. Er schaute mich zurück an und wir hielten für 1-2 Sekunden den Augenkontakt, die sich wie eine Ewigkeit angefühlt haben. Ich bemerkte wie die Zähne langsam verschwanden und er an mir runter rutschte und neben mir mich weiter anfauchte. Ich ging weiter ohne mich umzudrehen mit der Konzentration zu versuchen zu hören, wenn er mich von hinten angreifen möchte. Als ich nach rechts und links schaute, wurde mir das erste mal etwas mulmig, da sicherlich 20 Affen in den Büschen saßen, die mich anguckten. Wenn es zu einer Eskalation gekommen wäre, würde ich auf jeden Fall den kürzeren ziehen. Dazu sollte es zum Glück nicht mehr kommen und ich konnte in Ruhe weitergehen. Als wir um die nächste Ecke waren, wurde ich von den anderen Touristen angesprochen, wie ich so ruhig bleiben konnte. Leider gibt es von dieser Begegnung keine Bilder oder Videos, da es alles recht schnell ging.

Im Anschluss haben wir uns dann noch die Aufführung angeschaut. Glücklicherweise haben wir einen Zettel mit dem Ablauf bekommen, da die Geschichte ansonsten etwas schwer zum Folgen gewesen wäre. Am Anfang war die Geschichte etwas zäh und langweilig, hat jedoch eine interessante Wendung genommen, sobald ein Affencharakter eingeführt wurde, der ordentlich aufgeräumt hat. Ich kann die Aufführung nur empfehlen, wenn jemand mal nach Bali fliegen sollte!

🇺🇸 The last stop was planned to be the Uluwatu Temple, which was supposed to be the highlight of the trip. I had already visited the temple, but on that day, we had signed up for a fire performance depicting a Balinese legend. Before the performance started, we had some time left and wanted to walk along the temple's cliffs a bit. A special feature of the temple is that there are many monkeys here, and unlike in the Monkey Forest, where the monkeys go about their own business, these monkeys are cheekier and more aggressive. Here, the monkeys try to steal things from people to exchange them for food.

On one of the paths, a female monkey was sitting with a very small young animal. Tourists stopped in front of it to take photos. My trip to South Africa greatly helped me to understand animal behavior better. Some of the tourists wanted to continue walking and decided to walk behind the monkey and its young. From that moment, the escape route for these was cut off, and the young animal pressed closer to its mother. From a distance, I saw a male monkey approaching who seemed to have fixed his attention on me because as soon as he reached the group, he made a big leap and jumped at me from the side with some speed.

There I was, with a hissing monkey clinging to me, baring large teeth. I didn't panic but remained very calm, as showing panic, in my opinion, would have been a sign of weakness. Normally, one should not stare into a monkey's eyes for long, as it is considered a provocation. But since the monkey was already clinging to me, that step was already surpassed. The people around me were startled and quickly sought distance. I started walking slowly to move away from the other monkey and its young and began to stare into the monkey's eyes. He looked back at me, and we held eye contact for 1-2 seconds, which felt like an eternity. I noticed how the teeth slowly disappeared and he slid down from me and continued to hiss next to me. I continued walking without turning around, trying to concentrate on hearing if he would attack me from behind. When I looked to my right and left, I felt uneasy for the first time, as there were surely 20 monkeys sitting in the bushes watching me. If it had come to an escalation, I would definitely have been at a disadvantage. Fortunately, it didn't come to that, and I was able to continue walking in peace. As we turned the next corner, the other tourists asked me how I could stay so calm. Unfortunately, there are no pictures or videos of this encounter, as it all happened quite quickly.

Afterward, we watched the performance. Fortunately, we received a sheet with the sequence of events, as the story would have been a bit difficult to follow otherwise. At the beginning, the story was somewhat slow and boring but took an interesting turn once a monkey character was introduced who really stirred things up.
