Our biggest ride day. 678km. We left Mudgee early to Scone and via more back roads onto Tamworth. We turned off The New England before Armidale via The Waterfall Way over the range throigh Ebor bypassing Dorrigo to go to Grafton and then on to Maclean on the river by the sea.
Now enjoying a beer by the river. Our last overnight stay. Should we take the fast highway home or go over Kunungra? I think Kath wants a beach swim. We'll see what happens.Read more

After leaving Melbourne on the 27th Jan 2022 we chased to stay ahead of the storms and the low coming across from South Australia into Victoria and southern NSW. We made it to Albury on tbe 27th but headed off early which allowed us to mostly avoid the motorways and enjoy some wonderful countryside views.
A quick stop in Wattle Flat to put our wets back on, we pressed through the rain showers to make it to Mudgee.
What a great town. It's seemed a bit flashy for a county NSW town. And the real-estate prices were off the charts crazy. But then we realised it's only 4hrs from Sydney and there's a bunch of good to mis-managed wineries around the penny dropped this town was Sydney's well-to-do's country retreat. What's better than inviting friends up to your winery?
Still, our stay at a local pub benefitted greatly as everything was clean, well managed and very comfy.Read more

While in Swansea we saw a bunch of bikers who turned out to be from Hobart's Ulysses club. They were super friendly and helped with lots of rides around the area. Glad to have a chat.
Pity this our last day in Tasmania. We will have to come back.Read more

Swimming at Swansea. Much warmer than I expected but still cool. Kath and I spent 30+ minutes swimming around, splashing while trying to avoid looking like wounded seal shark bait. Amazingly clear and clean waters. Very refreshing.Read more

Our early days were quite the challenge. Port Arthur was reserved for the worst re-offenders. And at first glance it looks pretty grim for the convicts, the soldiers and even the officers. But when you consider that most convicts were "put to work", they spent the vast majority of their time away from Port Arthur cutting timber, quarrying, building houses or boats. Their actual time spent in a prison wall was confined to only when they slept.
There were no prison walls either. The Port Arthur prison was walled by sea and forest. The prisoners, soldiers and officers lived "together" within those walls. Sure they lived in chains and different buildings but they still worked together.
Unless they offended. Then they were screwed. 23hrs in solitary, silent confinement. Strange Quaker ideals about reforming the affirmed through silent solidute and self reflection came into force. The next door mental asylum was never without patrons after they went through that hell.
Still. The area now is quite glorious. Check out the pics and the huge bees they seem to have down here.Read more

Wonderful afternoon yacht cruise in Kettering. We were the only two people to book so we recieved a private charter. Wine, cheese and good conversation.
Well worth it for a quick go on a 38foot ocean cruising yacht. Fun and relaxing.
I love the Kettering area. I think this is my favourite area in Tassie so far. Almost solitary beaches, fantastic precinct for boating, clear waters, abundant fishing, oysters right off the rocks, eclectic historic housing and farmhouses. And 30min to the centre of Hobart.Read more
