  • Space Needle

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We explored the Pikes Market again with Maddie and then walked the streets to get a feel for the city. We ended up at the Space Needle to check it out. Lots of cool street vendors and musicians everywhere. Great city!Read more

  • Conibear Shellhouse, UW

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Saw the boat from the 1936 men's Olympic team that won gold! Also, saw the NCAA championship trophy from the women's team. Maddie is inspired now! Cool bonus is that the shellhouse has its own dining hall!Read more

  • Gingko Petrified Forest State Park

    August 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 81 °F

Wretched drive out of Seattle due to Friday traffic, LOTS of construction and truck drivers going 30 in a 70 and not putting on their flashers. Rather frustrating to say the least.

We arrived in time to make dinner and it was SUPER WINDY!!! 💨 💨 💨 Gordie's tent is blowing away along with Patrick! A unique feature of this campsite is that we were able to see it from the road above as we drove to the entrance ⛺️.Read more

  • Half-Sun Travel Plaza

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 72 °F

Stopped at the nicest travel plaza for gas this morning. They had everything you could need from cowboy hats to snacks to food to wine tasting as well as very clean bathrooms. Excellent place to stop.

The 14 miles preceding were unexpectedly educational. They listed the crop growing in each field behind the fences on the side of the highway. We saw beans, carrots, potatoes, alfalfa, field corn, sweet corn and green manure. It also informed us that Grant County, WA is the nation's highest producing county of potatoes. 🥔

  • Gonzaga Boathouse

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Just 12 minutes from campus on the Spokane River is the Gonzaga Boathouse. Here they have 6,800' of river all to themselves and it's protected by the hills so the water is usually good and they don't have to miss practices. Website says they can practice outside well into February! They are the only crew team on this stretch.Read more

  • Idaho - Coeur d'Alene

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 77 °F

We are back in Idaho, but only for an hour as we head to Glacier National Park in Montana. Minimal cell reception there so we will be off the grid for a few days. Catch you on the flip side!

  • Welcome to Montana!

    August 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Crazy windy mountain pass to get here. Passed a horrible truck wreck. Passed lots of little mountain towns with one having a Huckleberry Festival.

Welcome to the Mountain Time Zone!

  • Glacier - Fish Creek Campground

    August 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Arrived last night after a yummy stop at Buffalo Wild Wings in Kalispell. It was an eventful night with a squirrel scampering across the camper's roof scaring Maddie into closing her top vent, Gordie yelling/talking in his sleep so loudly we could hear it in the camper and then Patrick fell off his bed so we decided pancakes and a leisurely morning were in order.

Saw this odd 🚌 camper two sites down. Interesting approach.

Loving being back in a National Park campground again. Always have the best sites!

Now it's time to explore Glacier!

  • Solar Eclipse

    August 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Saw the solar eclipse at about 82% and it turned everything yellow. Maddie got some great pictures using her phone and we borrowed glasses from a ranger to see it before going on an eclipse hike with Patrick.Read more

  • Laundry!

    August 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Hooray for laundry! The KOA in St.Mary has coin laundry and we are in need of some clean clothes. Bonus is that there is a playground, delicious coffee and milkshakes next to the laundry. Can't complain!

Maddie liked this wasp that joined us for the horribly twisty drive from Browning to here.

  • St.Mary Campground

    August 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

This campground is a stark contrast from the west side of the park. Trees are much smaller, but at least we have trees because the sites at the KOA campground were bare. We are right next to the bathroom and everyone loves that. Our own private path there! This campground also offers showers. Another bonus for our hikers who have not quite arrived from their trek across the Going to the Sun road.Read more

  • Ranger Talk

    August 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

Went to a ranger talk tonight at the campground about the prehistoric animals that used to live in the park. This long stick has two orange flags on it. The first is at 12' and represents how tall the grizzly bear was standing up and the higher one is at 15' to show how far the bear could reach with his paws. Wow! 😳 Check out the bear's skull!!! 🐻Read more

  • Lake Josephine & Grinnell Lake Hike

    August 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Angus, Maddie and Gordie headed out for a hike around the lakes in the Many Glacier area and returned to Swiftcurrent Lake after a half hour to where Patrick and Sarah were playing to tell them they ran into a bear 🐻!!! 😳 So they changed their route and continued their adventure around two other nearby lakes bear-free. What an adventure!Read more

  • Logan Pass

    August 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Maddie & Sarah took the shuttle up to Logan Pass to check out the view while the boys napped and showered. So worth the drive! Love the Going to the Sun Road!

  • View never gets old...

    August 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We will miss these mountains and this view. What a park! (We won't miss the bear proof dumpster, should have cut that out of the picture!)

Met a guy from Ireland on his motorcycle. He has Netherlands plates on his bike, but lots of Irish stickers as well.Read more

  • Little Bighorn National Monument

    August 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

Took a break during our 11 hour drive from Glacier to Devil's Tower to stop and learn about Custer's last stand against the Lakota and the Cheyenne warriors. Custer lost his life and that of more than 260 soldiers, while the Indians lost about 100 in June, 1876. It was one of the last armed efforts by the Northern Plains Indians to preserve and protect their nomadic way of life. Gold was found in 1874 on the Indian's designated land and Americans wanting that gold broke the 1868 Fort Laramie treaty enraging the Indians. Peace could not be made and the army was called in to maintain order. The Indians won this battle, but lost the war.Read more

  • Wyoming!

    August 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Great to be back in Wyoming! Highway is red here, mountains are back, too. One side of the road is green and the other yellow and bare.
