  • Kodachrome Basin State Park, UT

    August 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Thank you to brother-in-law/uncle Philip Bartlett and his colleagues for a great recommendation about this campsite. Unbelieveable vistas as we are camping with rock walls nearly surrounding us. Also, bonus that they have full hook-ups for the camper, pristine bathrooms and FREE showers! Ahhh, clean and fresh. An amazing campground and park we would recommend to anyone traveling near Bryce Canyon. It may be a half hour from Bryce, but well worth the drive.

A couple of pictures from last night and this morning.

  • Bryce Point, Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park

    August 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Our first views of the canyon came at Bryce Point. Stunning! We were lucky to find a parking space and lucky that we are under the 25 foot limit for driving through the park. With a little monster on board, we need the camper today. Yes, he is a little monster today!Read more

  • Sunset Point, Bryce Canyon

    August 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We hiked Queens Garden and the Navajo Loop beginning from Sunset Point, crossing the rim to Sunrise Point before heading down into the canyon. So many pictures that we'll have to post a couple here.

  • Wall Street & Thor's Hammer, Bryce

    August 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

More hiking pictures on the Navajo Loop. Angus left us to do the Peekaboo Loop as our little monster was in need of a nap. Look closely on Wall Street for Gordie hiking up the switchbacks.

Shout out to uncle/brother-in-law Rick and aunt/sister-in-law/sister Sharon on the Thor's Hammer pictures! It's the name of their dog and our camper :)Read more

  • Driving into Zion on Rt.9

    August 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 90 °F

This drive in was amazing!!! The road turned brown once we entered Zion National Park and we had to get a special permit to go through the 1.1 mile tunnel. $15, stopped traffic both ways, got to drive through the center of the tunnel, we felt very special.Read more

  • Visitor Center, Zion National Park

    August 16, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

The big kids are off hiking Angel's Landing! It's the quintesential Zion hike as you go up 1,488 vertical feet over 5 miles hiking through Walter's Wiggles, a series of switchbacks, and then walk across the "Landing" using chains bolted into the rock to help you climb the steep terrain. There are 1,200 foot drop-offs on either side as you climb! Certainly not for the faint of heart. The best part is the summit where you have 360˚ panoramas from the “Landing,” and landmarks like Big Bend, Cathedral Mountain, and Cable Mountain, as well as the Virgin River and the Great White Throne can be seen. Looking forward to hearing all about it when they return!

Patrick and Sarah explored the campground and nearby river. Found a campervan all the way from Germany!!! See the last picture for proof. Made sure to get Zion rocks in the pic since Patrick still cannot say "Alemania" quite yet. Though he can say "ardilla" (squirrel) quite well! Grampy, does Germany earn more? $5? They did have to bring their vehicle across the Atlantic Ocean!

    A perfect morning in Zion!

Here are pictures from today's hike to Angel's Landing. Angus, Maddie and Gordie left the campground at 8, at the trailhead by 8:45 and back to the camper by noon! Wow! Gorgeous views!

  • Leaving Zion

    August 16, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

After cheap showers at Zion Outdoors in Springdale (a quarter and a half bought enough minutes for one shower!), this is what happened. Tired explorers!

Drove through Arizona again on I-15 (long pass full of construction, ugh!) and then Nevada where it opened up into desert.Read more

  • Circus Circus, Las Vegas, Nevada

    August 16, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 108 °F

Arrived in Vegas to 110 degree heat. Yuck! Parked at tonight's campground, which isn't even worthy of a picture as it is a cement parking lot, and took a tour of the Circus Circus hotel. Yes, it had AC, but smoking is allowed in casinos in NV so it was rough. Took a stroll around to see what the indoor amusement park was all about and had to leave. Sensory overload! Back to the camper for some AC and tacos...Read more

  • Hermosa Beach, CA!

    August 17, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Surprise! We are at the Pacific Ocean!!! Seeing that Las Vegas was under an extreme heat warning, Death Valley was unsuitable for human existance (120+ there) and our little camper AC, even on max, was never going to be able to keep us cool, we ate our tacos last night in the camper at Circus Circus, made a phone call to Angus' St.Mark's high school roomate and headed for his house in Redondo Beach, CA! We arrived just before midnight PST and it was well worth the late arrival.

This morning we found the ideal plaza with Trader Joe's, Barnes and Nobles, Old Navy and REI before heading to the beach! Will post pictures once we actually get there as small fry needed a nap after a big morning.

  • Barrett's, Redondo Beach, CA

    August 18, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Huge THANK YOU to the Barrett Family for letting us park on their street, use their showers & laundry and share their amazing Carne Asada, Spanish rice and beans taco dinner! We feel very spoiled!

Dinner was the perfect end to a great day on Hermosa and Redondo Beaches!

Ate lunch at In 'N Out Burger, a first for everyone but Angus, and we all now know why it is a bumper sticker worthy stop.

Walked down the strand, a beautiful walkway along the water for pedestrians, bikes and many rollerskaters. Had a beer at Naja, a small local place tucked in a marina where Angus had been almost 20 years ago with his St.Mark's buddies Mike Barrett and Kevin Lyons (whom we will see at Lake Tahoe!).

Gordie got to stop in at a local spearfishing store and wowed the owners and Angus with his knowledge of everything in the shop. We could have a CA transplant one day!

Finished our beach day with one last dip in the Pacific. Everyone went in and loved it! No pictures unfortunately as we were having too much fun jumping waves and making sand castles.

Best surprise stop!!! So glad we came to the beach!!!

  • Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park

    August 18, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our first views of Half Dome from Glacier Point. Intimidating?!?! Not for our hearty hikers!

Note to future Yosemite explorers: Taking the Glacier shuttle bus from the Badger Ski Area is a nightmare! They only came every 60 minutes so an hour and a half side trip took us 3.5 hours!!! Then we get up to Glacier Point and there are RV's there & extra parking spots for RV's when they said it was full. With a toddler, the waiting was rough! Worth the views in the end so all good.

In the last shot of the valley you can see the Awhanee Hotel where Grampy Carpenter used to work in college.

  • Lower Pines Campground, Yosemite Valley

    August 20, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Patrick and Sarah moved across the street to Lower Pines Campground. Tough to get four nights in a row in one spot. Luckily, Lower Pines provides us with a gorgeous site tucked into the trees with much more room at the site and between sites as we have a spot on the outside.

Angus, Maddie and Gordie are off on the most magnificient and stunning hike of the trip! A 14-16.3 mile hike up to the top of Half Dome! They left a little past 5am with lots of water, food, water purifier and gloves to tackle the last 750ft. up the cables to the summit. This will be a memorable day for the crew! From the new campsite we can see the top of Half Dome, spectacular!

For those of you who do not know, getting reservations for things in Yosemite is nerve wracking! To get campground reservations you wait for the period of time you would like to camp open up for reservations, in our case it was April 15th for the August 15-September 15 window. Then, you have the whole form filled out online and you keep clicking refresh, refresh furiously at exactly 10am EST/7am PST praying you will get a campsite. This day and time came about on a Wednesday 15 minutes before Sarah's Spanish 2 Advanced class let out. Having read online that campgrounds fill within minutes, Sarah got her class involved in a project and began clicking away. Shh! Don't tell on her! The campgrounds filled up so fast that we could only get two nights in one campground! In a panic, Sarah started the whole process again, nervously shaking as she tried to fill out the form as quickly as possible and clicked again. Luck was on our side and two more nights were avaiable at Lower Pines. There must have been an audible sigh of relief and exhilleration as one of Sarah's students questioned "What concert did you just get tickets to see? You look really excited, Sra.Carps!" Sarah explained it was campground reservations and the students laughed saying only Sra.Carps would get this worked up over a campground. It's important stuff!

As for Half Dome, well back in the day you got up early, put on your boots and up the trail you went. Now, you must have a permit to go up the last portion of the trail. With only 225 permits issued a day via a lottery system and a possible 25-50 issued two days ahead via another on-site lottery, the stakes were high. Only 35% of applicants received a permit. We entered the lottery and waited until they posted the results on April 12th. Luck was with us once again and we got our first choice of hiking days, today! It was a meant to be. Looking forward to hearing from the hikers upon their return. They'll be getting a huge spaghetti dinner to fill them up.

  • Climbing Half Dome!

    August 20, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

They did it! Ten hours, nearly 17 miles hiked and lots of memories later, our intrepid and strong hikers returned to camp very sore and full of stories of a great day. Gordie said that the cables were awesome and that everyone at the top was super impressed that an 11 year old with size 11 feet made it all the way to the top! He learned that grippy garden gloves work the best on the cables. They got great views from the top!

As usual, all the good pictures are on Maddie's camera, but here are a few from Angus' phone to wet your appetite. GORGEOUS HIKE!!! Congratulations to our hikers!

Great views of Half Dome! From this angle you can see the side that Angus, Maddie and Gordie hiked up yesterday. Gorgeous!

Patrick stayed in his car seat and made sure to let us know where he was!

  • Burnt Cedar Beach, Incline Village, NV

    August 22, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Spent the day at the local beach to help celebrate Mandy's 5th birthday (ok, so we party crashed!) where they have lake access in a rocky area because the lake is 6 feet below normal. Great for finding crayfish! There was also a playground, pool with slide and a baby pool. Awesome area!

Finished the day with an amazing dinner at Lupita's Mexican restaurant where we had REAL mexican food. The guacamole was divino. Gordie got El Presidente fish tacos and Maddie the tacos carnitas, Sarah got Lupita's Burrito with a chile relleno inside and Angus went for the supreme burrito. Only problem was that hardly anyone could finish because Kevin had made pulled pork sandwiches and enormous ribs in his smoker for the birthday party. Hmmm, thinking we need a smoker! ¡Muy sabroso y fantástico!

Headed out in Kevin's boat to Hidden Beach. Water makes it seem like you are in the Caribbean, until you get in!

Finished the day with a hike to a viewpoint of the lake from Kevin's house. Last picture is of Kevin's house so you can see how they are all built up the mountain here.

A great day in Lake Tahoe!
