    July 24, 2016 in England ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Up at 1:30am after a difficult 5 hours sleep. Off to the airport in a bit. Reminds me of working nights, that sickly under slept feeling where you feel like you need to take your eyeballs out of your head and scrub them clean. Airport travel is so uncivilised and unnatural after experiencing the overnight boat to Amsterdam last New year. It's been very hot in the UK this past week heading to even hotter climes seems a bit insane, but hey, I like insane. Keep the coffee coming!Read more

  • Terminal 1

    July 24, 2016 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Security was a lot quicker than i expected we had fast track but there where no queues anyway. Getting a last full english breakfast before checking out the many shops. I often wonder if they deliberately put the security far away from the boarding gates just so they can fit more shops in your path.Read more

  • Monzon De Campos

    July 24, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

At our first hotel, a nice stopover in a little village just off the A67 near Castilla. Got a nice Estrella Galicia cervesa grande in front of me and Marie has a nice iced Tinto de Verann. Just woke up from a nice siesta after a well deserved cold shower, the first of many i recon. Going to grab a meal later in the restuarant owned by our hotel.

At the restaurant we got them to put us in the patio at the back which was very cute. Marie had a goats cheese salad and had a teja, chorizo, pork with chips topped with fried eggs all served on a roof tile (teja, a local thing i think).

  • Caceres old town 1st night

    July 26, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Justin took us down to the old town last night and we had a nice drink in the 'La Plaza Mayor' before wandering around the old town itself, beautiful buildings from many different cultures. There was a really nice beer garden in the middle called 'Corral De Las Ciguenas' which often has blues bands playing on a little stage, shame it was only a Monday really it would have been great to see a band there. We then went to meet Justins friend Stuart for a nice burger on the way home.

Night was really hot and sleeping was a real struggle. My cold shower in the morning was fantastic though.

  • Virgen de la montant santuario

    July 26, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 38 °C

Visited this lovely spot this morning after picking up Ollie. Views over Caceres are fantastic much better than it looked on Google street view. It's a very peaceful place if you needed to get away from the city to think, this would be a good place to head. Met some horses on the way back.

We went for some tostas (toast) in a nice cafe which had cold water mist spraying over you while you sit outside under the canopy. Then Ollie took us to his local park before we headed into the air con sanctuary of the local 'Eroski' shopping mall. Met Ollies mum (Christina) when she picked him up.

Just had a siesta to catch up on last nights lost sleep then went to a local bar for some really cold estrellas (Marie had red wine - still no sign of the vodka monster - good girl) and met Justin's girl Angelica for an hour before heading back into Caceres again. We ate at a place where they just keep bringing little tapas to your table as they come fresh out of the kitchen and if you want one you can take it for a euro. Weird guy standing at the bar kept trying to sing some shitty song to us in english before we left sounded like a mash up of barbie girl tbh. We then walked back and stopped for a nice lemon ?granita? on the way were we met an Irish friend of Justin's with his spanish girl and yes i got the obligitory brain freeze headache from the granita.

So tired after such a busy day i don't remember going to sleep.

  • Trujillo

    July 27, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Spent a little while this morning watching a health and safety nightmare in the school opposite, a builder balancing on a pallet which was hanging from a crane while they unloaded massive floor tiles from it.

We then went for tostas again in a different bar called Vivaldi. They had a nice original jukebox.

Went out in the car to the nearby town of Trujillo about 25 mins drive from Caceres. Sun was baking hot so we didn't do much more than walk up to the castle before returning for some shade and liquid refreshments on the town square. Trujillo is beautiful and we caught it when it was not full of tourists which was nice. We then had a meal in one of the restaurants €15 each for a four course dinner. Which was ok.but not the best we have all had.

  • A Guarda

    July 28, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After a long long drive we finally arrived in A Guarda and our hotel the Hotel Convento de san Benito. First impressions are that its fabulous. The view from window over the harbour couldn't be better really. Its a bit cooler here too in early 30's and a nice briney seaside smell. Gonna have a shower before moving the car into the hotel parking and going for an explore.Read more

  • Benedictus piano bar

    July 28, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Car park was like something out of grand theft auto 5 in the basement of an old warehouse behind 2 automatic doors. At least the car feels safe in there. Piano bar is part of the old convent building like our hotel. Nice cervesa grande and Marie had some Port. Off to browse the restaurants now.Read more

  • Casa chuppa ovas

    July 29, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Restaurants on the promenade are all a bit expensive but we found one recommended on tripadvisor 'Casa Chuppa Ovos' which was great. I had chillied cockles followed by clams in an onion sauce with a bit of rice, Marie had tuna salad in red pepper followed by a kind of marinated/smoked cod fish salad. We both had some homebaked cheesecake to finish.

After such a long drive today (9 hours) we went to bed early in our nice cold room.

  • Ferry to Caminha

    July 30, 2016 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Got up this morning and went back down to the beach from yesterday. Mist came in from the sea but it was still nice having a lie on the sand listening to the waves and the cold breeze. We then went and caught the ferry over to Portugal (1 euro each) to a little pueblo called Caminha were we had a nice sandwich for lunch and a walk around the shops very pretty.Read more

  • Cies islands

    July 31, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Got up early and drove to Baiona were we caught the ferry to the Cies Islands. Lovely day and well suncreamed up we went on the longer walk to the lighthouse at the other end of the island. Stunning place this as you can see from the photos which don't do it justice. It busy here but not too busy to be irritating.Read more

The hotel is lovely although not sure if we can cope without air con though. Very quiet with a nice fountain in the garden. Very relaxing.Read more

  • Anela beach

    August 2, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Started the day doing our laundry in Fisterra. Our pizza bar was shut so we went to another italian place we found were the menu del dia was only €10 each. I had spag bol marie had carbonara and we both had pollo milenese (chicken in batter a bit like a schnitzell) including drinks not bad for €20. Then we went to see the lighthouse or the "end of the earth"

After this we went to Anela beach which was a bit if a walk down to but was stunning and only one other group on it so we practically had it to ourselves. I finally got to take a dip and it was freezing.

Later we went round a chinese hiper market which had even more cheap shite than B&M and we visited our neighbors bar which were they had a siamese cat two terrapins two budgies and a hamster. Nice to relax without worrying about driving.

  • Didn't go to Santiago De Compostela

    August 4, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We didn't sleep very well due to the heat so we chose to sleep through our alarm. Went into town to see about getting the later bus but while waiting we decided that Santiago was probably chocca with pilgrims and could just be a long hot day of queuing. So we went for a nice drive up the coast instead.

We got back and had a little siesta and when we woke up it had been raining and there was a sea mist or fog everywhere. Went for a pizza/carbonara meal in Fisterra, came home again and watched a nice film "Sing Street".

  • Cantabria

    August 6, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After Fisterra we did a long drive along the north coast to a place called Valmeo which is near Potes on the east side of the Picos mountains. Our apartment is perfect, so picturesque and has everything we need including a washing machine. Potes is very mice and twee. Lots of tourists though but still nice enough. We went to go up the Fuenta De (ski lift) but is was way too packed out with people they tried to get us to park in a field which wasn't very flat and to be honedy would have taken the exhaust of the bottom of the car so we wished them all the best and went back to Potes. Had a short siesta and going out for a nice meal in a bit. Fortunately Liverpool v Barcelona is on telly so Marie can take her time getting ready. 4:0 nice one. Had a mexican meal for dinner Mmmm!Read more

Yesterday we went up the ski lift into the mountains which was nice fantastic views up there and surprisingly hot as well. We only did a short walk but it was nice. We then came back down and had a quick look at the bear house museum before a nice "menu de dias' in a cider bar in Potes. Had a night in and watched "Knocked up" on telly. Cristina our hostess called round with a basket of veg from her garden so I made us a nice egg salad.Read more

  • more Mexican food

    August 9, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Last night after trawling around town looking for a place to eat, I don't mean to be funny about the local food but every restaurant had exactly the same menu... cocido lebaniego, entre cote, chuleta, bacalao contamate, ternera, cerdo...etc. and While these are nice in their own right we started to rebel and crave something different. So we had mexican chicken fajitas and tuna nachos. With margaritas made in a slush machine.Read more
