Day 7 - Santiago de Compostela

    April 14, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today was supposed to be a day of rest, but we accidentally walked 14.5k exploring the town! The local people paraded through the streets at midday to celebrate Palm Sunday - accompanied by men playing the bagpipes (we don't understand why). We then collected our posh pilgrim certificates before lunch and then strolled through the park and saw the sights. We will be disappointed to get back to the U.K. where you don't get free food with every drink you buy!Read more

Hooray! Well done pilgrims! At least the flight home tomorrow will force you to sit still for a couple of hours :)

Day 6 - Arca to Santiago de Compostela

    April 13, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We met up with Tom and Vera for coffee before setting off for the last leg of the walk. We passed through forests of eucalyptus trees and climbed to the highest point so far. We passed the sign for Santiago at about 5pm and staggered into the old town about 45 minutes later. Celebrating the completion of our mission with a glass of wine and a hot shower!Read more

    Day 5 -Arzua to Arca

    April 12, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Today was the sunniest day so far so we made the most of the good weather and only stopped to soak up the sun in a pilgrim's cafe garden. We were on a mission to beat Tom and Vera to Arca (which we did by a whole hour despite them coming via bus, and us walking). Passed some beautiful hamlets and dense forest for 18 kilometres before meeting Tom and Vera for his birthday dinner.Read more

Day 4 - Melide to Arzua

    April 11, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Only 14 kilometres today so we walked it all in one go as the weather was so good. We had lunch when we arrived in the town of Arzua, followed by sweet tapas. The walk was very hilly and the closer we get to Santiago the prettier the towns become. The amount of pilgrims is steadily increasing as other routes meet up with the Camino de Santiago. Buen Camino!Read more

Day 3 - Palas De Rei to Melide

    April 10, 2019 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 10 °C

Arrived in Melide after walking 14.5km, only stopping for a Nesquick and a quick loo break. We felt a bit lazy (!) after having walked 45+ kilometres over the past two days, but it was nice to have a cup of tea and a bath to rest our legs. We made a trip up to the old town in the early evening. We were especially happy to be given free tapas with our wine and catch a rare glimpse of the sun after another day of rain.Read more

Glad you getting free food to go with the wine 😂😂 !! Lizzie lou xxx

Day 2 - Portomarin to Palas De Rei

    April 9, 2019 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

We set off from our lovely garden hotel bungalow called Casa de Maestro just as it was getting light. We walked for 24.8km to the next town on the Camino Walk. We stopped only for giant sandwiches, Galician Pie (a traditional pasty style pie filled with whatever the cook has spare) and wine. Arrived at our hotel 7.5 hours later feeling quanked (obsolete word of the day according to Google). The Casa Benilde hosts have been amazing; taking our wet clothes to dry and setting up the room so it was really cosy. Now off to find more wine, even if we have to crawl 😉Read more

Day 1 - Sarria to Portomarin

    April 8, 2019 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

We started the walk at 8.30am and after a short detour around the town we headed off towards Portomarin. Along the route we collected the first four stamps in our Credential del Peregrino passports. We walked 23 kms through beautiful countryside in glorious sunny weather, torrential rain and hailstones. It was well worth the effort, especially as the pilgrim's menu includes a large glass of red for €1.50.Read more
