Last Tuesday I went on an organised coach trip inland to Prince Albert in the Karoo. I go on quite a few coach trips in England but they are few and far between in SA so I was very excited when I found out about Nostalgia Tours who do organised trips here.
Me and friends Ria and Hennie were up very early on Tuesday to join a lovely set of people on the one mini bus of two to set off with our first stop being in De Rust for breakfast. This is a small village in the gateway to the Klein Karoo. The name is Dutch and literally translates to "The Rest" referring to the town's original purpose of being a resting place for settlers en route through the challenging pass of the Swartberg mountains. After a very tasty breakfast it was back on the bus to travel through the awesome rock features of Meiringspoort onto Prins Albert in the Karoo (a vast semi desert region). Here we visited a cheese farm where we learned about the art of cheese making and did some cheese tasting. After lunch at a quaint hotel in Prins Albert we travelled back to De Rust for a stop at an olive farm for olive oil tasting. Arrived back on my doorstep 12 hours later absolutely knackered but what a fun day.
