Volcán Barú

Welcome to the Panamanian highlands! It was refreshing to get away from the steamy coast, and after a day or two relaxing in the village of Volcán, we decided to join a group climbing Volcán Baru, the highest peak in the country. Our route started at 5am in cloud forest, then wound up through subalpine forest and finally a pure rocky landscape. We spent the night camping near a cluster of radio towers, then enjoyed the sunrise near the peak. We lucky to have a wonderful group, and two excellent guides, Jorge and Layson. The whole experience was two long and tough days, but absolutely worth it!

Willkommen im panamaischen Hochland! Es war erfrischend, der dampfenden Küste zu entfliehen, und nach ein oder zwei Tagen Entspannung im Dorf Volcán beschlossen wir, uns einer Gruppe anzuschließen, die den Volcán Baru, den höchsten Gipfel des Landes, besteigt. Unsere Route begann um 5 Uhr morgens im Nebelwald, schlängelte sich dann durch subalpinen Wald und schließlich durch eine reine Felslandschaft. Wir übernachteten in der Nähe einer Ansammlung von Funktürmen und genossen dann den Sonnenaufgang in der Nähe des Gipfels.
