    Getting my DC sea legs

    August 29 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

First stop, Capitol walkaround. Hits different now knowing what happened here.

Beautiful sunny day! I took the metro from the airport to my hotel where they let me check in early to the world's smallest room.

Now waking around waiting for my tour times. I'm glad I'm here.

  • Library of congress

    August 29 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

4 miles already and just getting started. Tooled around the library of congress. Saw the main reading room, Tom Jefferson's library, and a fun exhibit comparing George Washington and King George.

  • Tried to find the Florida senator

    August 29 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

So I'm wandering around the senate offices looking to see if I can nab some tickets to watch the senate or house. Joshua kindly directed me across the street to where I needed to go. And the security guard kindly helped me figure out how to find the Florida senators office. So I'm wandering around. Nobody is around. Most doors are closed (holiday weekend). However Mitch McConnell has his office door wide open with a welcoming chair right inside.

Um.... That's a big no for me.

I did eventually find Ashley Moodys office but it was locked up tight.

    Oh well..

  • The Capitol

    August 29 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

    I saw the Capitol.
A lot of statues of men.
And a really fun tour guide named Joshua.

Though I don't think he realized that he was fun. He was pretty darn serious.

  • National Portrait Gallery and 10 miles

    August 29 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

I walked through the national portrait gallery. I loved the president's section. It reminded me of when Emily was obsessed with the presidents in second grade. And it was absolutely wonderful seeing all the people clustered around the portrait of Obama and talking so positively about him.

And the people that flipped off Cheeto as they passed him by cracked me up. Nobody was looking at his portrait.

I realized I'm too tired to get dinner so I got the Walgreens for a bed picnic of string cheese, harvest peas and cashews. I'm going to read the declaration of independence tonight and then I'm going to sleep.

I walked 10 miles. On three hours of sleep. And only one coffee.

    Not bad.

I'm doing ok with the solo thing. It's interesting to just roam wherever I want to go.

Let's see how tomorrow goes. Night night y'all!

  • Starting the morning off right

    August 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

So I slept for 11 hours. Straight. And I woke up miraculously with an unsore body so I am off once again to explore.

    But first... Coffee.

And ohhhhh it was delicious. A creamy, foamy, light mocha done to perfection with a perfectly baked gluten free raspberry bar.

I have a good feeling about today.

  • Museum of American History

    August 30 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

I'm tired. But currently getting reenergized with a frito pie and iced tea in the cafeteria at the museum of American History. The cashier was remarking that it had been incredibly slow over the last few months, and she is surprised that it's not more busy for a holiday weekend. "things are changing, I guess", I said. And she nodded sadly.

    Cool museum.

  • I'm toast

    August 30 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

One fewer mile then yesterday. I'm a slacker who is going to settle in for a bed picnic and a screening of Jaws.

  • Church service at national Cathedral

    August 31 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

It was a looooong uphill hike from the zoo to the National Cathedral but I made it just in time for the service.
    Beautiful interiors.
    Lovely, inclusive service.
Pointed political message (which I appreciated their daring!)
    And a Darth Vader gargoyle.
    Literally.
Then I hopped on my first public bus to go to my next appointment.

  • Planet Word

    August 31 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Thank goodness for buses. It got me to Planet Word, a super cool museum dedicated to... Well... Words.

    I loved it.

Everything was interactive, entertaining and educational.
There were exhibits about the power of advertising, what makes a joke funny, why lyrics get popular, how words are created, and animated descriptions of popular books. And secret rooms!
Now, my body is calling uncle. I'm hooked up in the Regal cinema catching a movie. Enough miles for the day!
