  • Princess Point Sunset

    June 13, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

A ride through the city, chasing the sunset. We ended up at Princess Point, one of the prettiest spots in Hamilton to watch the sun go down.

An hour, and around 40kms, all city driving. The best part was taking the Kenilworth Access to the Sherman Cut, and back down the escapement again through Corktown. Very pretty!Read more

  • Niagara Ribfest Bike Night

    June 14, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Friday night ride down the QEW to Niagara Falls' Rapidsview Park and the Bike Night at Ribfest.
It was a smaller turnout of bikes than we hoped for, but we had a great rib and brisket dinner from the Camp 31 booth. We watched the judging for Best Bagger, Best Softtail, Best Custom. And it was a good night for a ride to try out my new jacket.

When the sun was setting, we took the River Road to Fort Erie, and then hopped back on the highway for home.

The passenger seat was not ideal for a 2 hour ride, we will start looking for replacement.

  • Michigan Road Trip day 1 & 2

    Aug 29–30, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

    And we're off!

Thursday: We left New Hamburg On for Sarnia's Bluewater Bridge on Thursday morning, lunch in Port Huron at the iconic Raven's Inn Cafe.
We stopped for gas in Lapeer and stumbled on a Harley dealership next door. A quick tour through the store, and bought a sticker for the saddle bag!
There was some highway construction that took us off Hwy 6 and onto a beautiful treeline scenic route around Grand Rapids. We arrived in Holland for our first night.

Friday: up and out of the hotel before 9 for a drive along the stately S. Shore Drive, not something we were expecting to see in Holland. Still a very Dutch community, as noted from the business names throughout the town.
First stop at the Paris Eiffel Tower and Fish Hatchery.
Lunch in Traverse City, a visit to Zips Harley Davidson for another sticker and then the scenic 119 through the Tunnel of Trees.

We arrived in Mackinaw City around 7, and ended our long driving day with a soak in the hot tub.

  • Michigan Road Trip, Mackinaw Island

    August 31, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

When we arrived in Mackinaw City on Friday night we took a walk down the main drag, to the tourist stores, fudge shops and marina, to find the boat launch to Mackinaw Island.
We bought boarding passes online so we could skip the line in the morning. We want to get on an early ferry so we can take the route that goes under the Mighty Mac Bridge.

Saturday morning we take our time getting coffee and breakfast sandwiches, and board the ferry at 8:45am.

Mackinaw Island is beautiful, very geared to tourism but we can't complain about that - we are tourists!
We both left our sunglasses at the hotel, so that's our first purchase on the Island. Our best decision: a horse drawn carriage tour - tix purchased online, much easier - for a few hours of hop on-hop off around the island. The guides were fantastic, so much history there.

We walked around the Island for the rest of the afteroon, checking out private residences and the famous Grand Hotel. It was a clear day, the sun beating down, and by 4 o'clock we were done and ready to board the departure ferry.

A stop at Zip's Mackinaw for souvenirs - no shirts that we liked, so just bought another sticker - and then back to the hotel to clean up.

In the evening we went to the Jack Pine Lumberjack Show. It was cheesy and fun and we laughed the whole time.

Looking forward to the drive over the Mackinaw Bridge tomorrow.

  • Michigan Road Trip day 4

    September 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Sunday: After checking out of Court Plaza Inn, we stopped for coffee at Starbucks before crossing "Mighty Mack", the Mackinaw Bridge.
5 miles across, ending at St. Ignace, we paid a $4 toll for a windy ride with an incredible view of Lake Michigan on the west, and Lake Huron on the east.

We rode to Castle Rock and climbed 317 steps to the lookout, and then stopped in the gift shop for - you guessed it - a sticker for the saddlebag, and a patch for the vest.

Next stop: The Cross in the Woods (largest crucifix in North America), another unique stop, in Indian River - we had no idea that mass would be in progress, it was beautiful.

Lunch in Gaylord, Zip's 45th Parallel was closed, so we got back on the 75 towards Saginaw, and then Port Huron and the bridge back to Sarnia, Ontario. After lunch we really bundled up, the sky was clear but temps were low.

We settled into the Days Inn Sarnia, unaware that there were a dozen riders there completing a charity run through the Ontario Highlands.
We found a restaurant that was still serving dinner after 8pm and walked along the Harbourfront. Nice to stretch out the muscles after a long riding day.

  • Michigan Road Trip day 5

    September 2, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Monday: we navigated the Labour Day Parade crowds out of Sarnia, fueled up at Starbucks and on to Highway 2 heading home. It's a cold windy day, so we opted to avoid the 401/403.

Lunch in Woodstock at a nice little diner, ironically also called the Chuckwagon, and then rode through Paris, St George, Waterdown and back home before dinner.

All in all, 1988 kilometers (of that, 900 miles inside Michigan). It was a great long weekend, perfect weather and road conditions.
