  • There are no elks in Spain

    28–29 mar, Maroko ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

and there are no giraffes in Morocco. But we are back on the African continent and will enjoy every minute of it. Even without giraffes. 🦒🤷🏻‍♂️

I am not complaining about leg room on the budget airline again, but 4h from BER to RAK is more than enough. 🙅🏻‍♂️

We spent the night in Marrakesh, picked up our car, water and snacks this morning and drove through the Atlas mountains to Ouarzazate. 🚙
The roads were easy to drive and the views spectacular. ⛰️ The scenery changed from the busy city 🏙️ to snow covert mountaintops 🏔️ and moon like landscapes 🌚.

We checked in at the “ecolodge La Palmeraie” were we will spend the next 3 nights in a “tent” ⛺️ under an almond tree 🌳.

  • Like in the movies

    30 marca, Maroko ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

On this side of the Atlas Mountains there is the “Moroccan Hollywood” Ouarzazate with film studios and several movie sites. 🎬

So after a surprisingly chilly night in the tent, we “fired up” the jeep (actually the first couple meters were driven electric, since this is a hybrid) and visited two of the most famous ones:

    Aït Benhaddou 🏜️
The location has been fortified since the 11th century, but the layout of today is more likely been set up in the 17th century.
It is mainly built out of clay and straw which require constant maintenance. Today it is mostly inhabited and acts as a tourist attraction and film set.
Gladiator, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones and Outer Banks were filmed here, just to name a few. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site, and features a stunning 360° view.

    Kasbah Taourirt 🛕
Originally build in the 17th century it belonged to the family of the pasha of Marrakesh in the 19th century and was a vital point along the Saharan trade routes.
After years of neglect, the city of Ouarzazate began restoring parts of it with the help of UNESCO.
It was also shown in gladiator and prince of Persia.📽️

Back at the lodge the afternoon was spent at the pool, reading&relaxing.📖🏊☀️

  • Flora and Fauna

    31 marca, Maroko ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

The idea for this post was formed this morning on the way to breakfast.
2 frogs (toads?) 🐸 were mating right in the middle of the terrace and since we wanted to explore the nearby fint oasis, why not try to find more creatures and nature to photograph. 📸
So we found more toads (frogs?), 🐸fishes 🐠and lizards 🦎(all of them to quick for our camera), a donkey 🫏 , date palms and (maybe) a fig tree.

And then there was also some blonde creature, walking around in the dry riverbed…. 💇‍♀️

  • Up and down the Atlas mountains

    1–2 kwi, Maroko ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Yesterday we left Ouarzazate and drove back over the Atlas Mountains 🏔️ , took a left turn just before Marrakesh and headed towards Ouirgane. We arrived at your beautiful Airbnb “Villa Quince” took a dip in the pool 🏊‍♂️ and enjoyed the sunset 🌅 from the rooftop terrace.

Today we went to the visit the highest mountain in North Africa. Mt. Toubkal (4167m).
We did not climbed to the top, since this is a two days tour with a mandatory guide. But we did a 12km hike around Imlil, which provided great views of the different peaks around us, waterfalls 🌊, small villages 🏡, baby goats 🐐 and sheep 🐑 and thanks to Komoot an path away from the many other tourists 🤳.

  • Blown away 💨

    3–4 kwi, Maroko ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

After all the mountains ⛰️ , sightseeing and hiking 🥾 of the last days we were ready to spend some time hanging out at the beach 🏝️ and enjoying the easy live in Essaouira. 😎

Upon arrival we were blown away!
But not by the sheer endless little alleys with hundreds of shops in the medina or the picturesque harbour. Also not by the vast beach or the view of the Atlantic Ocean from our rooftop balcony.

We were (almost) actually been blown away by gusts of wind of over 85 km/h, the sand from the beach feeling like an unwanted peeling 🌬️and later on also 🌧️ . Our second time in Africa, and the second time we experienced rain. Maybe it’s us?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

But today the wind calmed down the temperature went up 🌡️and we got to experience all of this city beauty, had lunch on the rooftop and got to see the sunset from the old city wall. 🌅

Maybe tomorrow we will can finally spend the day at the beach and maybe even get the feet wet!? 🌊👣Will see!

  • A brief visit to Marrakesh

    6–7 kwi, Maroko ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The last day in Essaouira was mostly spend at the beach 🏖️and yes we did get our feet wet 👣, but not more than that. The weather was nice but not nice enough for the water temperature 🥶. And thanks to some helpful AI we have a spectacular movie from one of the tours through the medina 😎.

After another couple of uneventful hours in the car we arrived in Marrakesh and things got chaotic. 😵‍💫
The address on the AirBnB reservation was not were the riad was actually to be found, but with a little “help” from “friendly” locals🙄, some calls 📞, a lot of googling 🗺️and a 30min walk through the crowded medina we managed to check in. 😮‍💨Thank god we travel light and with backpacks! 🎒

The riad felt like an oasis in the otherwise loud and busy alleys. Indoor pool with orange trees, welcome tea on the rooftop terrace and a very friendly host took away some of the stress. 💆

Today became more hectic than anticipated, but we managed to see some more of the medina and sights, before we hastily headed to the airport 😥. Unfortunately there was not enough time to fully explore Marrakesh but from what we saw, we felt more “at home” in Essaouira anyways.

We had a great time in Morocco 🇲🇦 with beautiful landscapes, great food and nice people but next time we are in Africa we will be back to where there are giraffes!🦒
