    Mary River NP/Mamukala wetlands

    On our way into Kakadu we stopped in at the bird billabong in Mary River NP, and also Mamukala wetlands to see some vibrant bird life. At bird billabong we could sit in a inconspicuous viewing platform to watch the spectacle of bird play happening out on the water. We saw white-breasted sea eagles, loads of whistling kites and whistling ducks, great egrets, jacanas and many more bird species. We learned later in our time in Kakadu that the wetlands play a crucial role in the ecology of the park, providing an immense amount of nutrients that then feed the rivers and surrounding vegetation.
