    Packing and Preparing

    15 de marzo, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Packing has been a challenge trying to stick to just a carry-on. I’m traveling with winter boots and bulky cold-weather gear for temps around a low of 23° and highs in the low 40s… and I’ve finally accepted the truth: a checked bag might be unavoidable.

Compression bags have worked wonders though—so much so that my checked bag will probably be only half full. I might give the carry-on-only plan one more try… a girl can try, right?!

Thanks to my sweet husband, I’ve got some foreign currency ready to go. Travel adapter ✔️ American app & Allianz travel insurance ✔️ and a new gadget that will (hopefully!) let me pair my AirPods with the in-flight entertainment.

Last two things on the checklist:• Notify my credit card that I’ll be abroad• Register with the U.S. Embassy through STEP

I’m beyond excited for my Finnish adventure with Avanti Destinations! 🇫🇮✈️ Make sure you’re following along so you don’t miss anything

  • Travel Day!

    22 de marzo, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌬 93 °F

Late morning flight out of my local airport and breezed right through security 🙌 Flights were on time and I even landed in Dallas a few minutes early ✈️

Now it’s time to grab a late lunch, a cold beer, and do a little people watching before heading off to Helsinki 🇫🇮

A few travel reminders from today:
    • Give yourself extra time at the airport — you never know what the travel world will throw at you
    • Bring a mask… trust me on this one 😷 I had a few coughers nearby and wasn’t taking any chances
    • I start taking Emergen-C about a week before traveling to give my immune system a little boost

And probably the most important tip of all…
🚫 DO NOT use the seat-back pocket

The same people coughing around me were using it as a tissue trash can 🤢 Hard pass.

Hoping I can snooze some on the last leg of my flight as I have to hit the ground running!
    Safe travels, friends.

  • Helsinki

    23 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Finally made it to Helsinki 🇫🇮

A private driver was waiting to take me to Solo Sokos Hotel Torni — my home for the night. Luckily, my room was ready, so I squeezed in a quick shower and a 45-minute recharge before heading out for a walking tour.

Our knowledgeable guide showed us around the highlights of this beautiful city. Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world for the ninth year in a row as of March 2026! 😊 They are also a globally conscious nation, frequently ranking first in the world for sustainable development, environmental protection, and contribution to the global common good.

We went to some pretty neat spots:
    Helsinki’s Central Library: https://oodihelsinki.fi/.
Central Train Station which was rated the top 10 stations from the BBC. https://www.vr.fi/

Next up was a hotel inspection of the beautiful Hotel Kämp—absolutely stunning and full of classic charm.

It was interesting to learn that It is not uncommon for citizens to see high-ranking members of the government in public spaces.

Our night wound down with a tasting at the Helsinki Distillery Co., where they distill their own gin and whiskey. Just a small taste for me! It was followed by a three-course meal—everything I tried was absolutely amazing. But by 7:30 PM, jet lag was catching up to me, and unfortunately, my appetite had other plans.

What a full, amazing day it’s been—I’m more than ready for bed!

  • Finland - Day 2

    24 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Slept like a log, woke up ready for the day.

We took a short walk to the pier and boarded our ferry to Suomenlinna. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1748 to protect against Russian expansion. Today it has museums, cafes and small restaurants. It’s a really cool mix of history and laid-back outdoor vibes—think cobblestone paths, sea air, and old fortress walls. Perfect for wandering, especially if you like casual exploring with a little story behind it.

Next was a hotel inspection of the Solo Sokos Pier 4. The sounds of the Finnish forest welcome you as you enter the beautiful lobby. The proximity to nature, domestic raw materials and authentic materials create a multi-sensory and atmospheric environment where everyone feels good to be, rest and work A perfect location for sightseeing, shopping and next to the ferry terminal.

We then made our way to Vaanta for a traditional Finnish sauna experience and if we dare, a cold water plunge. Side note, the Sokos hotel chain is the only chain in Helsinki with in house saunas.

First was the smoke sauna, It’s considered the most traditional and even “sacred” form of sauna in Finnish culture—people often associate it with relaxation, reflection, and connection to nature. Heated for 6 hours then aired out. After the heat of the sauna, and some coaxing from my fellow travelers, the cold water plung was!

On our way to the airport for our flight to Rovaneimi we have a surprise stop at Fazer Experience Visitor Centre. This is basically a fun, interactive attraction in Finland run by the famous Fazer chocolate and food company. This place was so cool and I wish we had time to truly experience it.
    https://www.visitfazer.com/en/

We arrive at the Helsinki Airport and after a short delay we arrive in the Lapland’s, specifically Rovaneimi. Snow is covering the ground and big flakes are falling. This will be our home for the next two nights, also home to Santa’s Village.

A quick check in at the Sokos Hotel Vaakuna and I finally settle into bed at 11 PM. Around every corner you how the people of Finland care for each and for Mother Earth. What a day!!!

  • Day 3 - And it keeps getting better!

    25 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

    This is a long one…..

Early morning, we’re up and out of the hotel by 8am, bundled up and full of excitement for the day ahead. Today’s highlight? A VIP meeting with the “big guy” himself—Santa Claus. But first….I cross the Arctic Circle!

The path you take to meet Santa feels magical, lined with presents, festive decor, and letters to Santa from around the world.

Santa Claus Village also offers overnight stays and day rooms for visitors.
    https://santaclausvillage.info/fi/

Visiting Santa Claus Village is one of the reasons travelers make their way to Rovaniemi. This magical destination offers so much more. From thrilling outdoor adventures like dog sledding and snowmobiling to unique stays in glass igloos, there’s no shortage of unforgettable experiences. And of course, there’s the ultimate bucket-list moment—chasing the Northern Lights… fingers crossed we’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse.

Afterward, we had two hours to explore—browsing shops, grabbing a bite, and even taking a reindeer-pulled sled ride for the full Lapland experience. ✨

We are fortunate enough to tour glass igloos which are just a 10 minute walk from the village.

We then head to Husky Park—and if you know me, you know this was the highlight of my day. https://huskypark.fi

On our private tour, we learned how the dogs are cared for and trained. Another first for me: my very first sled dog ride!

Afterward, they gave us some time to warm up in a cozy yurt with a fire burning and some amazing vegetable soup—such a perfect touch.

We wrapped it up with a meet-and-greet with the pups, which was extra special since I’m definitely missing my fur babies back home.

Back in town, we did a quick room inspection—only a couple themed rooms, including a Christmas and Northern Lights room (so cool!).

After a short recharge, we toured the newly renovated Hotel Santa Claus—beautiful property, with Christmas decor only from October to March.

Dinner was incredible: artichoke soup, creamy rigatoni, and reindeer (yes, another first!), followed by fruit and fresh cream for dessert.

Ended the night with a waterfront walk—thought we saw the Northern Lights, but no luck. Back by 8:30 and ready to relax.

  • Finland - Day 4

    26 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ 🌧 39 °F

9 AM start as we head out on a three-hour private transfer from Rovaniemi to Saariselkä, where we’ll be staying for the next two nights. The drive gives me the perfect chance to sip my coffee and catch you up on yesterday. 😃

Our first stop is the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort — a place I’m already familiar with (and actually have clients staying at right now!). I message them when we arrive, hoping I can sneak in a quick hello and a hug before we’re off again.

There is just so much to say about this resort—you really have to check it out for yourself! I’m so thankful to experience it firsthand, thanks to Avanti Destinations.
    https://www.kakslauttanen.fi/

Everything here is sustainably sourced. The wood used throughout the resort is dead pine, aged anywhere from 100–800 years. All of the furniture is handmade by local Finns, and the artwork is as well—making every detail feel incredibly authentic and connected to the region.

We stayed longer than planned, so it was a bit of a rush to get to Northern Lights Village for our snowshoeing adventure.

Thankfully, they took our bags so we could gear up and head straight out. It started to snow, but the mild temps made it feel perfect.

Our guide pointed out animal tracks along the way, and halfway through we stopped at a cozy teepee with a fire, warm berry juice, and marshmallows to roast.

After our two-hour trek, I was more than ready for an amazing buffet dinner at the hotel. Fresh salads, roasted veggies, fish, soups, and warm bread… all so good. And let’s not forget dessert.

After dinner, I finally get to see my room…or should I say igloo!!! A-mazing!!! Perfect for Northern Lights viewing. Let’s see if Mother Nature will cooperate. I download the Northern Lights alert they recommend, so fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Regardless, this has been another amazing day filled with more firsts!!

  • Day 5 - My dreams came true!

    27 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Happy to have a relaxed morning since I definitely wasn’t ready to leave my igloo.

First on the agenda was visiting a reindeer farm owned by a Sámi family. The Sámi people are the only officially recognized Indigenous group in the European Union, and it was incredible learning about their family history and daily life with the reindeer.

Lunch was simple and perfect—salmon soup, sugar cake, and hot chocolate. And a fun fact: reindeer shed their antlers every year… and they grow back in the same shape!

Our bags were sent ahead to Lapland Hotels Riekonlinna, right in the heart of Saariselkä village. With a few hours to spare I wandered through some local shops, hoping to find the perfect little treasure before enjoying a couple hours of downtime.

The day isn’t complete without a hotel inspection 😉 First up was Santa Hotel Tunturi—part of the same chain we visited earlier, but with a slightly different vibe and great for both large and small groups.

Next was Wilderness Hotel Saariselkä, a beautiful, brand-new property they describe as Arctic luxury.

We then toured Wilderness Hotel Kieppi—a more moderate option, but still excellent. We wrapped up the visit with a wonderful buffet dinner there, with plenty of great choices.

The skies hadn’t been ideal for Northern Lights viewing the past few days, but I stayed hopeful—sending good vibes into the universe and encouraging my companions to do the same.

Bundled up, we met our guide at 9pm and set off under cloudy skies, hoping for the best. Just five minutes in, the driver suddenly shouted with excitement—he could see the lights—and quickly pulled over.

As you can imagine, we were beyond excited—oohing and aahing at the beauty above us. After a while, we debated taking a chance and continuing on to our intended destination, farther from the light pollution. It was a risk we were willing to take—and it paid off!

The open space gave us even more breathtaking views than before. Our guide quickly built a fire to warm us up and prepared simple snacks—sausages, marshmallows, and warm berry juice. In between sky gazing, she shared stories and local knowledge, making the whole experience even more special.

This was the night of all nights!

  • Day 6 - Final Adventure

    28 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °F

Up and on to our final adventure of the trip—a snowmobile safari. They gear you up with everything you need to stay warm, from thick socks to a full snowsuit. We head out into the forest and get a quick lesson on driving before taking off.

The wintry landscape is absolutely beautiful. And I’ll admit… I secretly wish we could go a little faster! I’m sure my son Thomas would never think those words would come out of my mouth.

After our playtime in the snow, we head to Hotel Inari for a wonderful lakeside lunch and a hotel inspection.

Interestingly, the reindeer races are happening, and the town is absolutely bustling. Jockeys—often experienced herders—are towed behind the reindeer, skillfully guiding them and keeping them on course.

    https://www.tapahtumienlappi.fi/fi-FI/page/69a1…

This afternoon we make our way from Inari back to the Ivalo airport, with one last stop at Hotel Kultahippu for a quick site inspection. It’s a wonderful in-town location and a great base for outdoor activities.

We check in for our short, hour-and-ten-minute flight back to Helsinki. Our hotel, Clarion Hotel Helsinki Airport, is literally at the airport—we grab our bags and take the elevator straight up to reception.

The Clarion is easily the most beautiful airport hotel I’ve ever seen.

A quick drop of our bags, and we’re off to a 9pm farewell dinner waiting for us. A big cheers to our incredible hosts for the week—our AAA partner, Avanti Destinations, and Kuoni Tumlare, our in-country tour provider.

  • Headed home….Maybe

    29 de marzo, Finlandia ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

Shocked when I grabbed my phone and saw I slept until 10:30! I can’t even tell you the last time I slept that late.

I get a notification that my Finnair flight is delayed an hour—so my two-hour connection in London is now down to just one. I may be having tea and crumpets for breakfast… 😅

But if this trip has taught me anything, it’s to stay positive—things can work out even when life looks a little bleak.

Update: American flight was canceled as I would’ve definitely missed the connection. I was rerouted in United through Iceland and Washington Dulles. Running through the airport and last on the jetway, final boarding had been called. I have a strong feeling I’ll be spending the night in Washington, especially seeing how they didn’t give me the boarding pass! 🤦‍♀️

The flight to Iceland is packed. Overhead space is gone. I introduce myself to the aircraft and am literally passing passengers carry on bags, asking if they have lithium batteries and if there’s anything they need, to flight attendants so they can be gate checked 😂. When traveling, you just have to roll with it!

    To be continued…..
