The stones and sand at Napier beach are black due to their volcanic origin and high iron content. These materials, known as titanomagnetite, are carried from volcanic regions (like the Taupo Volcanic Zone) to the coast, resulting in dark-coloured, iron-rich deposits that create the distinct black shoreline.
